Virtual Quilting Weekend 10/7-10/10/22

Welcome to Virtual Quilting Weekend! What are your plans for this weekend? I have three quilts to sandwich, quilt and bind. They're lap quilts so hopefully I'll be able to finish them. The other item on my agenda is to sort through a basket of stuff in my sewing room and put away. Next VQW is November 10-13, 2022.

Good evening everyone.
My goals this weekend: 1= quilt & bind lock-in 2020 top (king size); 2 = bind a brown sampler quilt and bind my Bauble beads quilt; 3 = Put Halloween top together; 4 = Sew blocks together for r/w/blk top.

Railroadersbrat 10-06-2022 10:35 PM

I'm in. I'm still kind of in my cross stitch mode and I'm probably planning a little too much this weekend, but I have an embroidery floor stand that I need to get together, move three sewing machines out of my way so it has a place to sit when I'm not working on it and a little bit of reorganizing. I bought a fat quarter bundle from Amazon this week that I'm trying to figure out which quilt I want to use them on, so I'll post pictures of it and then hopefully, figure out which quilt I want to do. I'm leaning towards either the Meadowland Quilt or the Carpenter's Star - either way, I think it'll be a beautiful quilt because the colors are vibrant and kind of remind me a little of candy. I do know the background is white, that's as far as I've gotten. At some point, I'll be working on bowl cozies and then if I still have enough left in the gas tank, I may work on my sister's quilt for a day. I know I have some floss bobbins coming either today or Saturday, but all my floss has been bobbinated, so that'll just be to get them out of the package and into my cross-stitch bag.

The weather has been very kind to me this last couple of weeks and it's planning to be the same this weekend, not a chance of rain anywhere in the forecast and the temperatures are seasonal. So, I'm going to get as much done as I can while I still feel really good and strong. Even if I don't get everything done I want to do this weekend, it's going to be fabulous to be in my sewing corner with my quilting sisters. I missed last VQW, I'm not going to miss this one.

Panchita 10-07-2022 02:15 AM

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get in some quilting time this weekend, and would love to join you :-)

Alongside two birthday parties (one Sat, one Sun) and DS's football training I'll be hoping to work on:
  • Cutting and piecing the first few blocks from Piecing the Past's new quiltalong 'Harvest Gatherings' (now that my background fabric has arrived) - I'm planning on doing a smaller version than theirs, maybe large wallhanging size, and am excited to start something new!
  • Continue handquilting on Cats and Pumpkins tablerunner - I'm partway through ditching the inner border (mainly to keep it in place) and am finding it incredibly boring. It seemed like a good idea when I started... I then need to move on to the decorative quilting for the inner and outer border.
  • Maybe do some more DSM quilting of the Christmas tree skirt I made last year - it could do with a bit more of something, but I haven't quite decided what yet
Oooh the possibilities!

Happy quilting everyone :-)

WMUTeach 10-07-2022 03:17 AM

Goodness this one snuck up on me! Not that I don't have any projects to work on.

1. Quilt one large baby/throw quilt.
2. Layer one more quilt.
3. Go to Shipshewana with friends on Saturday. (Going to shop for baking ingredients, a bed spread, bird seed and just a little bit of fabric. ;))
4. Cut the pieces for an exchange block challenge with my quilt group.
5. Make my ornament for the ornament swap - Shh------can't tell what I am working on.
6. If I get bored.............quilt and add binding to some holiday potholder gifts.

More than enough for any weekend!

High-ho, high-ho its off to quilt I go! . :)

cjsews 10-07-2022 03:27 AM

I have 2 bed runners to work on. Pieces for pinwheels have been cut and ready to start sewing on them. Then to start another project. Will it be a Xmas quilt or pieced dragonflies? We’ll see what strikes me first

Early Friday Morning Update

Not sure what's going on, every time I try to upload my pics, it tells me they've failed and I've tried a few times. Going to give up for now, I'll try again later.

Floor stand for my cross stitch is up and my full coverage Slow Living from Maydear is on it. I've stitched on it for a while this morning, going to take some getting used to using two hands and I'm learning to pin stitch so I don't have to flip back and forth. Lots of firsts with this one - first full coverage, first time using a floor stand, first time using the two hand method, first time with pin stitch. Don't know what I was thinking but yee haw! Actually, I take that back, my hands just can't handle all of that canvas when I was stitching in hand, I had to do something or the piece would never get finished.

Also got some reorganizing done, I've got my cross stitch stuff just about everywhere in my sewing corner, so I've been transferring patterns from their original plastic bags to some quieter plastic mesh bags. All four of my floss organizers have been cleaned out and bobbins organized by number, that was a chore and a half but glad that's done and off my back. Found all of my DMC needles and put them in the organizers and at some point in time today, I'll be getting another piece organized, floss and Aida cloth cut and ready to go.

Going to call it a day here in a little while and crawl into bed with the four legged kids and my other half. Have some dishes to do and walk up to the mailbox to put a package in. Love these weekends, I think I'm off to a pretty good start!

Karamarie 10-07-2022 07:41 AM

Putting together a baby quilt from a panel with flannel backing. Both pieces were picked up at a Thrift store and I will complete it and donate it to Santa's Helpers along with a stuffed animal and a book.

Dedemac 10-07-2022 07:58 AM

With luck I'm in this weekend. Between my husbands truck problems and block party at church on Sunday, I'm not sure how much time I will get to sew.
But if I do, I have 2 quilts to stitch the binding down for church and 3 UFO's to finish, plus a pair of socks to darn.
I think the sock will at least get done.:)
Happy stitching everyone!

QuiltingVagabond 10-07-2022 08:21 AM

Great timing! I have 3 lap quilts sandwiched and ready to quilt and bind. I also need to do the binding on an iron caddy tote - I think I will be making more of these for our guild show next year. Easy and handy!

petthefabric 10-07-2022 08:34 AM

Yeah!
1. Get design wall installed so #3can be done
2. BOOM blocks
3. Design artistic arrangement of cut pieces for quilt on design wall

tallchick 10-07-2022 03:23 PM

Thanks for hosting Heather! Unfortunately I have to work, but looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

donac 10-07-2022 04:04 PM

I am hoping to finish the first half of blocks for my older son's quilt and keep hand quilting my younger son's quilt.

Rff1010 10-07-2022 11:48 PM

3 goals for this weekend - a tad ambitious for me, but I think it's doable
1) choose pattern for the longarm lady, repair 1 place where the seam popped, finish backing piecing and generally get project #1 ready to send out2) make fast, simple baby quilt for my niece (at least the top) because
3) finish strip piecing for the top of the other baby quilt for the same niece because I did a miscalculation somewhere along the way and it's actually a twin...and a big twin (96x70). Oops....kid won't be able to use for 2+ years.

jmoore 10-08-2022 03:22 AM

I have not been able to sew all summer but with this weekend’s chilly forecast, I may just stay indoors and forego leaf raking today. I had precut all the pieces for a queen size Layer Cake Lollies quilt this spring so hopefully it will be quick to assemble.

Hi Ya’ll,
I think I’m going to pull out my Vintage Rose. All I have left are 2 sets of border arcs. Think I will put on a movie and go for it.

Pam S 10-08-2022 07:11 AM

I am working on a farm quilt from Lori Holt's book for a 3-year-old whose mother works with a friend of mine. The little guy loves tractors and farm animals. He was recently diagnosed with a metabolic disorder that will eventually cause severe neurological damage. I think he needs a cuddly quilt.

Yay! I missed the posting yesterday, but I'm in. I'm working on quilting two quilts. One is called Big Fish and the other is the State Fair Midway quilt that I was working on last month. Here's a pic of State Fair Midway in progress:

Happy Quilting Everyone!

Good morning (barely!) all!

thimblebug6000--Happy anniversary!

railroadersbrat--sounds like an ambitious plan for the weekend but you're off to a great start :)

donac and panchita--I'm impressed by the hand quilting. I understand the mechanics of it but haven't really tried it yet. One of these days though...

WMUTeach--I just made reservations in Shipshewana for April for a friend and I to go see Celtic Woman

QuiltingVagabond--hope to see you at retreat next month

tallchick--sorry you're working this weekend :(

I prepped a couple projects yesterday. Today is sorting and organizing I think. Tomorrow after church, I have a class--Open Wide 2.0 by Annie. Looking forward to that. Will check back in later.

I got my two bed runner flimsiest done. It think I have enough fabric for the backs. These will travel over to my sister to be quilted.

Saturday Afternoon Update

cjsews - those colors are so pretty together, love those runners!

sewingitalltogether - that Vintage Rose is s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g. I honestly can't wait to see that completed.

I'm having a slow start today, I managed to get some stitching done on Slow Living and my holo thread is here so I can grid my next two cross stitch projects. I finished up getting all of my Aida cloth together and put into a couple of bags, they're now in with my patterns, just a couple more things to do and I can honestly say, this will be the most organized I've ever had my cross stitch supplies. I'm super happy and the floor stand has been a game changer, I didn't realize just how incredibly freeing it's been to have both hands available. I'm still struggling just a little with the two hand method, but I'm chalking that up to learning something new and it's helping my eye-hand coordination, which I needed.

Today, I'm going to clean up and straighten up around my sewing corner, right now it's upended because of the floor stand and my cross stitch. Once I do the clean up, then I'll break everything out for bowl cozies.

I think it's my computer that's giving me a fit about posting pics, so I'll use my phone later so I can post them and get some ideas on the fat quarter bundle I bought. My other half doesn't think the Meadowland Quilt will be a good one for them, so I'll be open to any suggestions.

Raggiemom 10-08-2022 02:06 PM

Well, after sorting through the pile of "stuff", I still couldn't find the pattern I was searching for and realized I must not have purchased it in the first place! Since it's for a workshop I'm taking in November, I downloaded the pattern and pulled the fabric for it. Although it doesn't appear that I've accomplished much, I'm happy so far with my productivity. Tonight I'm working on an analysis of prospective retirement locations.

WMUTeach 10-08-2022 02:57 PM

1. Quilt one large baby/throw quilt.

Quiltah Mama 10-08-2022 05:29 PM

True story here. I didn't think I would really be able to join on this weekend as I am participating in a craft show both Saturday and Sunday. One of the items I had, we're quilts. I brought 4, and before lunch time they had all sold. A few days ago, I had ordered another 2yards on line of the material I am using on the front, it was delivered today.... guess who is sewing tonight to have another quilt for the craft fair tomorrow......I'll check on tomorrow night and read what everyone has been working on this weekend, but this lady has had a long day, and I hear my pillow calling my name. Enjoy.

cherrybsixty 10-08-2022 06:34 PM

sewingitall, that is a gorgeous piece of work and good luck at finishing it like you want

Margetoday 10-08-2022 08:51 PM

I started my second quilt, a variation of Grandma's Fan called Twirling Fan. My quilting desire may be bigger than my abilities. The fans are cut and piecing started. Fingers crossed 🤞.

rryder 10-09-2022 05:50 AM

I didn't finish quilting the Statefair Midway quilt yesterday, but decided to put it aside for the moment and work on Big Fish. After quilting a bit, my bobbin started rattling and even though I know better, I decided to keep going because it looked great on the top. Of course, there was a mess on the back. The bobbin thread had gotten wrapped around the latch on the bobbin case and was causing serious tension issues. I ended up taking out everything I'd quilted and starting over- fortunately I'd only been doing the "ditch" quilting in the black areas of unpainted fabric around the individual motifs, so I was able to take the stitching out no problem. Today I'm going to continue working on Big Fish since it has a deadline attached.

STILL working on hand quilting my flower garden. One day it will be finished. (I hope).

happylab 10-09-2022 10:38 AM

Good day everyone. I’m working on my niece’s Halloween top. I have 12 blocks pinned, pinning the sub pieces into the 16” blocks. I have 4 more blocks to pin, then I can sew the blocks together. Tomorrow I plan to sew the top together. Later today I will sew the binding on the 2 quilts needing binding. Then I will set up my king quilt on the long arm. Then I can focus on the r/w/blk blocks for my niece later in the week. So keeping busy. Have fun sewing/quilting everyone.

Dedemac 10-09-2022 11:23 AM

Just checking in, as usual my time is not my own. I did get the pair of socks darned yesterday so I take that as a win. Today I have gotten one of the church quilts sewn, but now I have to take a break in sewing the second to go back to church to the block party. I know I will have a little more time tonight to sew and then most of the day tomorrow.

Love the pictures and happy sewing everyone!

sewingitalltogether 10-10-2022 12:10 AM

Well, progress is slow. There’s 20 of the PP arcs on the border. And my body only wants to sit in my sewing chair for about an hour and a half. So, I got piece #4 sewn on. Will iron them today. This one is slow. Good thing I’m persistent!

Rff1010 10-10-2022 04:18 AM

1) Finished the center of my soon to be nephew's "baby" quilt that will come.out twin sized (57x87 when I add the border).

2) since quilt will be too big at first I whipped up a quicky for a right now using the "One Hour Baby quilt"
One hour baby quilt
I do not include the fabric pull or initial pressing - and it took me about 2 hours (2+ episodes of NCIS) but definitely achievable if you have a stash and need something fast.

3)Last project for today is to do the final prep for another niece project to go out to the longarm lady. Needs 1 more strip added to the backing, find that popped seam and repair, and choose pantograph. I should probably also contact the longarm lady and make sure she's available....

rryder 10-10-2022 05:39 AM

Got a fair amount of quilting done on Big Fish yesterday. Looks like that's all I'll be working on today as well. Will post a pic once I've got some more of the quilting done.

Rob

Raggiemom 10-10-2022 07:14 AM

WMUTeach--wow you've accomplished a lot this weekend!

Quiltah Mama--that's awesome about selling all four of your quilts :)

Margetoday--how is Twirling. Fan coming along?

kyquiltlover1942--hand quilting takes time, I'm impressed. Just think how happy you'll be when it's done.

Yesterday was my By Annie class. Open Wide is done and I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm actually happy with how the whole weekend has gone. Although I didn't get the quilt tops sandwiched and ready, I've made some good progress on other things that needed to be done. And Monday isn't over yet!

I got some of the dragonflies for my next quilt done. All the pieces are cut and marked for the remainder of them. I should have stayed in my sewing room and finished these.

Railroadersbrat 10-10-2022 12:28 PM

Got a lot accomplished this weekend, I think I'm stuck in cross-stitch mode for a little longer, the only thing I didn't get done was the bowl cozies, lol. I'm not complaining though, it was such a great weekend for me, I'm so much more organized than I was before and I'm relishing just how much faster my cross stitching has become with the floor stand. If I had known that I would benefit from one of these, I would have done it years ago. So, everything I got done this weekend....

Cross stitch floor stand put together
Cross stitch patterns and cloth organized
DMC floss organizers cleaned out and re-organized
Desk, sewing cabinet, ironing station cleaned and re-organized

I feel great with what I got done - see everyone next month!

Here's a pic of what I've gotten done so far on the Big Fish quilt. I'm still at the stitching in the ditch phase or in this case, using black thread to stitch around every single thing... Will keep at it until dinner time, then I think I'll be ready for a break.

It's been great to read about what everyone is working on this weekend. Thanks for hosting, Raggiemom!

Monday update:
1. I never touched the baby quilt, so it is not quilted or bound.
2. I did layer one more quilt on Friday. The local senior center, just opened this summer, has a large room with tables on wheels that we can move around. Perfect for layering quilts.
3. I did go to Shipshewana with friends and gazed on many wonderful quilts and bolts of fabric.
4. Cut the pieces for an exchange block challenge and pieced the blocks. Now making sure each is the correct measurements.
5. Minimal progress on my ornament for the ornament swap. :(
6. I layered and quilted 10 potholders but never got to the binding.

Progress is often slow but it will all get done as needed. :)

Dedemac 10-11-2022 12:39 PM

Tried to post yesterday on my Kindle fire, but the internet was being fussy. I was able to get both church quilts done and the socks darned but nothing else, so no work on the UFOs. This morning I stitched another church quilt and was able to pin the fourth. On the way to mom today I dropped off the 3 finished quilts, and did some quick shopping for our dinner. I was able to get mom's shopping done in under an hour and when I got back to her house she was up dressed and had her meds. So nice when she cooperates about getting up. I was back home by 3 so I have time to finish the last quilt and sit in the yard for a bit. I think this will be the last warm day up here. App on the phone said it's 80 out there, awesome for Minnesota in October. On the other hand I think I will reverse the order, sit in my swing chair then sew.

Thanks Heather for a awesome VQW see you next month.
