Virtual Quilting Weekend--5/23-5/27/19
Welcome to Virtual Quilting Weekend! Please join me this weekend if you can. Shopping, cleaning/organizing, quilting, planning--whatever you're working on. I will be hopefully finishing some projects that have been sitting around.
Next VQW is June 28-30. |
Just what a need to finish up something ....anything. Would live to check something off the list I made in January. Hope to see many beautiful project here in the next few days
Judy in Phx, AZ |
I am in. I have been sewing up a bunch of Xmas fabrics. After this current project I will be ready for a change. Wonder what will pop up next.
|
I have been waiting for this!:D. I started my weekend today, sewed a dress for my niece who is 3 and used a pattern that I used for my daughter who is 35:p. Patterns full price was $3.25:D. Going to the cabin this weekend so will be doing mostly hand sewing, might bring a couple of donation quilts to bind but will see how full the car is and if I can squeeze in the machine.
|
unfortunately, not me. We are zipping to Omaha to visit son and his family (Sat. & Sun) and on Friday and Mon I have lots of horse chores with my disabled mare. May be able to sew some on Monday since no work.
|
Count me in! Thanks for the invite.
I am working on 6 quilt tops. I had the blocks in my stash and I have them sorted and counted out already. Since I have no plans for this weekend, I will be pushing to finish all the tops and have a few sandwiched before Monday nite. They are all baby size quilts, so it's possible, ... if I don't run out of batting. I even have 3 or 4 books on CDs from the library already to entertain me as my little Singer hums along and does its job! |
I will be sewing as much as possible this weekend, I was hoping it was a VQW too! I spray basted a quilt to be donated to our senior center's Veteran's Day program today and will start quilting it tomorrow. Also making blocks for Midnight Flight, a Bonnie Hunter design, 7 more to go! And I want to cut the border pieces for that one as well.
|
I’m in. I have a quilt for my nephew that needs to be finished.
|
I may try to decide on the borders for one top and maybe even get them put on! Since I finally got upstairs and even sewed on my machine, I might be able to do this. At any rate, I'll be looking in here and cheering everyone on!
|
I'll be sewing if it rains. If not, I have flower beds to weed which is too tiring to sew when I come in. I did finish the Hugs and Kisses that I worked on last month. What to sew? FMQ a king size on one machine, a Arkansas Crosswords on another, but it may be get pushed aside so I can work on my scrappy Irish Chain for the challenge. There's a prayer quilt on the design wall, too. https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...s-t304787.html
|
Oh yay... a VQW! I will be working on some baby hats, bibs and Boppy covers to put in my Etsy shop. I also have several tops upstairs in the longarm room and can work on any of those that I have time for. Lots of sewing possibilites this weekend, tho I have to work on Monday.
|
1) I have a top and back all finished - just trying to get to quilting and binding. I need to join some batting prices together for it. Its a small baby quilt that I made in a class so I just want to get-er-done.
2) my mothers queen size: need to finish the binding. (Part of the reason for finishing #1 is to get better for #2) I'm trying to get these both done to avoid having a giant stack of ufos.... |
As Irishrose2 posted, I will sew if it rains...otherwise, I have too much to do outdoors and it looks like a decent weekend (finally) here in Maine so I am hoping to get my vegetable garden planted. Long winters here provide plenty of opportunity for quilting but the summers are too short to be inside so I’ll be peeking at everyone’s progress. : )
|
Count me in!! Now don't tell my doctor that I will be sewing and not having my foot elevated. Had surgery for the cyst on the heel. They un-wrapped it yesterday and then re-wrapped. They were pleased, it's not infected, not weeping, just looks good. One more week in my surgical shoe, no driving, must keep elevated.
I hope to get my plum Hunters Star to the finished top stage. Kathy, please post pic of the Bonnie Hunter you are working on. |
Here is the plan...... Finish the Double Irish Chain Sew-along. Layer/sandwich three quilts and quilt one for gifting. Mentally plan two more graduation quilts! That should keep me busy enough. :)

I had my caregiver take this pic hoping to earn points from the dr. See how well I am behaving, sitting with foot elevated on pillow, stitching a binding down. He didn't buy it and is keeping me from driving for another week.
|
Here's my plan: finish long arming small quilt that I had goofed up and spent part of yesterday evening taking out stitches, finish piecing a partially pieced disappearing four patch that uses red orange and yellow scraps , meet with sewing friends Saturday morning and my favorite LQS is running a 25% off fabric sale. That last one I should really stay away from, but ....!

Here is a picture of some of the Midnight Flight blocks - there are 88 pieces per block x 36 blocks and then a pieced border.

Hang in there and listen to the doctor, I've been there. Enjoy the "down" time. I will be working on a tumbler quilt, 783 pieces from my stash. All the pieces are cut, now just mindless sewing. It's kinda fun actually.
|
I"m hoping to get some sewing done. Have to work until noon today and then I'm off until Tuesday.
Haven't done much sewing the last two weeks due to work and visitors - had to clean the stash pile off the spare bed and finally got it all move back in this morning. I've spend most of May trying to get caught up on quilting, and think I've only got 8 quilts left to do. However that means I've now got about 10 needing to be bound. Family reunion is in July and I plan on taking most of them with me. Good way to find homes for excess quilts! And like several others - if the weather is good I really need to get some work done in the garden. DH and I managed to get the three 4x48 foot raised beds set up a week ago when we had a dry spell and it's been raining since. |
Looking forward to spending the weekend quilting. Have several projects I'm working on. A single and double irish chain (from the quilt-along here). Hoping to cut more 2 1/2" squares. I have several tops needing sandwiched so I'll see how far I get on all these projects.
|
My family down the street will be in Chicago for a Cubs game and will stay over and just enjoy themselves so I will be all alone. The VQW is just what I needed! I am working on 2 quilts with many pieces each. What was I thinking? One is Pam Buda’s 1800 quilt I have the 600+ 9-patch blocks made (2 1/2”) now I need to cut out the background. I am making this with a group at a LQS and we are now tasked with making a small quilt for next meeting and having 2 rows put together. The other quilt I am making is from the latest issue of BH&G called “Sew Many Strips”. I have made the 64 blocks and have 3 rows together..5 more to go, then the borders. Sigh. I am also hand quilting a small Irish Chain lap quilt so I have a lot to do.
Hang in there, Battle Axe. Wishing you better soon and back “on the road again”. |
Looking Good, Battle Axe!
I'll spend some time trying to figure out what to do with some UFO panels that I bought years ago. I've cut apart the images and was going to make a table runner, but just not sure that's what I want to do with them. If so, it'll be a plain Jane rectangular one, or maybe a square one and some placemats or napkins???? If I can get that one out of the way then I've got a quilt that needs to be blocked and a bunch more UFOs to choose from... Rob |
I did a class last week where we didn't get much done, so I hope to get the tote bag put together that I started and I am working on a sample for a class that I have been asked to teach, so I hope to get more done on that. Now, that I have my New York Beauty UFO out of the way I can dig into the rest of my UFO's and see what I can pull out.
I also have to make a run to the US to buy more fabric for a mystery quilt that I started working on....I didn't buy enough and now I'm worried they are going to be out of it! Watson |
Ooh, I hope they still have it! Call ahead!
|
I think I might join in the fun here at the VQW but like so many others I will likely spend time outdoors due to the beautiful weather! My weekend goal is to finish up a lap quilt for friends that have invited us to their Cape Cod beach house next month. Any other sewing time will be devoted to making additional irish chain blocks for the sew-along.
We have the LPGA lady golfers here this weekend at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, VA. so that may put a further damper on my sewing time. Look forward to seeing what others are working on this weekend :) |
Rats, they are out of the fabric I wanted. Have to switch from yellow to turquoise. It will still blend with the focus fabric...just be a little more colourful!
This is a 52 blocks in 52 weeks mystery quilt. I'm making 2 of each as they are only 61/2" blocks so I want to end up with something of a good size. Watson |
Watson, show us what you are looking for. We might have some.

Hello Virtual Quilters! I've finished the projects I was working on last time and am at my Mom's taking care of her after back surgery. Since I'm here for an extended duration -- today is just over two weeks, I'll be able to go home for Saturday (hubby working will be able to sew, maybe), Sunday, Monday and come back here again on Tuesday after my small group, and then back out here for another two weeks. My brother who recently retired is here and is having his gall bladder out on Wednesday... he thinks since it is just day surgery he'll only need a couple of days recovery... Like I said, I'm planning on being here another two weeks...
So my current project I'm calling Wonky Brights. The end result will be a twin sized donation project that I sort of see going to an 8-14 year old girl but who knows? I will find a group that lets the people select their quilts because it won't appeal to everyone, personally I call it "too loud to sleep under". I bought a large bag of scraps at the Goodwill that are nothing special, mostly remnants of fat quarters from Walmart and Joann that don't particularly appeal to me but as a collection work together. I'm making 9-patches with straight 90 degree angles but the squares are all different sizes and I'll be making the blocks large (10-12") and then trimming them down with my 8.5" square in various ways, skewed, from the corners, etc. The end result should be a glorious riot of color and print and look much more like a crazy quilt than a 9-patch. I'm usually more on the OCD side of quilting but I'm inspired by one of the ladies in my small group who is an improvisational quilter. Her work always looks fantastic in the end even if her blocks aren't exact and such -- My personal name for this project is "Harriet Drives Me Wonky". Today's task is to make the last 70 3-patch units before I start joining the 3-patch unit into 9-patches. I did some more cutting yesterday and I am coming to the end of the scrap bag but I have enough (I hope!). So today I sew! Well, after we get back from the Doctor's appt. No way to post pictures from here, I don't have the right cord to connect my old school but Digital camera to the Mac but maybe I can post from home in the next day or two. Keep quilting, my friends! |
I’m working on my BHMQ-GF. My goal to have it all put together. I have the blocks completed. Just need to 1) sew all the blocks together: 2) make 1 set of blocks for the border #2: 3) cut out 3 borders and sew these to the finished top. Then I’m done. In between I will make Christmas 9-patches. And finish making a train top. This one just needs 3 borders sewn on to the body of the quilt. Happy sewing everyone.
|
I finished the baby items I was creating during the last VQW. I was unsuccessful in finishing the quilt I was working on however due to my pickiness and unsewing! It lacks 'movement' so I'm retooling it. Will post pix.
Our Guild show is end of June so time is of the essence! |
Battleaxe, you look so very comfortable and happy! Take care and don't overdo or you'll have to explain to that mean doctor!! :)
|
Well, I decided to put the cut up panels away. They just aren’t speaking to me. I pulled out a doodle quilt I’ve been coloring, but have a gallery opening to go to tonight, so no getting much done. Hopefully I can get more done tomorrow.
Rob |
Good to see you, BattleAxe! Sorry you are a bit laid up.
QV, I love your Midnight Flight blocks. Stunning! Great colors. |
I found a table runner quilt kit the other day. The top is done. Since I didn't follow instructions I need to improvise the backing. I think I figured it out while she and I were taking a ride yesterday. Probably work on it on Sunday. Tomorrow I have some plants to put in and the off to my son's house to celebrate my birthday which is next week. After that the rest of the weekend is free. I need to get the table runner done. It is in red, white and blue. It will be nice to have it up from now until the 4th of July.

Quilting Vagabond - Kathy. Your quilt will be absolutely gorgeous when finished, Wonderful colors.
|
Quilting Vagabond - Love your blocks!
Battle Axe - Do what your doctor says. Believe me, your quilting will still be there in a few weeks. I have a top in my design wall needing borders that's been there since Jan. Some day . . . |
Thanks to everyone for their comments and well wishes. The Amish family came with the chain saw and chopped up the storm damage. It did get my wheelbarrow, but it was fixed. They are so good to me. When I can drive again, I'll take them shopping and out to dinner.

I will be finishing a quilt for the 'Grandmas' . My oldest Granddaughter is expecting a baby 10-03-2019. Her step Mom and Husband's Mom will be getting a quilt from me. Baby will be our 6th Great Grandchild. I have been planning to make the Step Mom a quilt but, just forgot. She asked again and even wants to pay me. I don't take ,money for quilts, I give them away or donate them. That is how this all got started. The Grandmas have wanted a grandbaby for a long time and very excited.
|
Congrats on that great grandbaby, Phyllis! So sweet of you to make the Grandmothers quilts.
