Virtual Quilting Weekend--August 5-August 7, 2016

Welcome! It's time for another Virtual Quilting Weekend. For newcomers, I hope you can join us as we share what we're working on this weekend and encourage each other over. All you do is post what you're working on and feel free to share photos of your projects too. But don't be surprised if you pick up a few ideas for future projects when you see what others are quilting! :) And for those who are cleaning/organizing their rooms (or shopping those sales this weekend!) yes that counts too!

I have several WIPs (works in process) that I would like to finish this weekend so I won't feel guilty about starting new projects next week.

Before I forget, the next VQW will be September 2-5 (Labor Day for we Americans).

And yes, I realize it's only Thursday but since I'm going to be quilting all day today, I figured I would start the thread a day early!

thimblebug6000 08-04-2016 07:28 AM

Have a fun day quilting! I hope to join you this weekend, I need to get more of my McKenna Ryan owl quilt fused etc.

Oh goody. I have two scrappy quilts on the go. I'm making one top with 16 patch quilt blocks made with 3" squares and the other will be scrappy string blocks using paper towels for foundation. I'm having a blast working on these trying to use up some of this fabric. I made this string block this morning.

McGargantuette 08-04-2016 09:28 AM

Can I join you? I feel quite sheepish doing it, since I'm totally new. But I am already planning on trying to quilt my first quilt this weekend, and it would be nice to have company! I was going to try to post a photo of the finished quilt top (it's the "colored happy" kit by Valori Wells), but can't seem to find the "insert image" icon to do that (maybe can't post photos from my iPhone?)

ManiacQuilter2 08-04-2016 09:33 AM

I am going to try to finish up the Bible bags I have made for my friend who will be going soon to the Philippines.

beckyboo1 08-04-2016 09:45 AM

I'm working on a quilt for my grandson with Apple Hill Farm line of fabric. Tried to post a pic but it says failed. Oh well, maybe I'll get it figured out eventually.

beckyboo1 and McGargantuette, I don't know if this will help you to post pictures or not, but this is what the website tells us to do. And welcome McGargantuette! Of course, you're welcome.

Posting a Picture

To insert a picture in your post, select the “insert image” icon on top of the message box. This icon looks like a framed picture of a tree. Once you select this icon, you have the choice of attaching a file from your computer or entering the url (web address) for the image. Please note that the url must be for the image itself, not the whole website. You can usually get an image url by right-clicking on the picture and selecting “copy image address”.

When you add a picture using the url, there is an option below the uploader that reads “Retrieve remote file and reference locally.” This will save the image file to Quilting Board’s servers rather than link to another website. We recommend leaving this option on, so that the other website cannot change or delete your image.

I finally had to load in on my fb account then bring it here that way.

What a happy surprise to open the menu and see a VQW has started! Thanks Raggiemom. It's always a pleasure. I will be working on whatever suits my fancy, but I'll keep you posted. I love seeing what everyone else is doing.

Definitely will be quilting. A couple weeks ago our guild made 2 charity quilt tops...only 6 people showed up for the sewing out of maybe 40-50 in the group. I said I'd quilt them if others would sandwich them. Well, no one wanted to do that either. So now I have the tops, have to sandwich and quilt by next Thursday. Thankfully soneone else will bind them.

Oh my goodness! Sounds like they are losing interest... Too bad, but at least you can feel good about what you are doing. You are being a huge blessing to someone else.

I have found some stack and whack triangles that I cut and never sewed, so I am putting those together today. They will be a donated Christmas quilt. Our group is trying to make a bunch of Christmas ones to give out to people hospitalized over the holidays. Wish I could see their faces when they get them.

I must be doing something different to add a photo. I use the Additional Options area on the bottom and then Management Attachments. Then Upload File from a Computer.

I plan to start my first official quilt this weekend! I recently purchased some adorable charm packs from MSQC, and I'm going to put them into a baby quilt. Hope all goes well, since I haven't really practiced, just watched several videos between Craftsy and YouTube! lol

OK, since I posted how I add my photos, I figure I am kind of joining in. I have been working on this quilt for more than a couple of months. I was very very close to adding the binding but it didn't lay right. I use the quilt as you go (Kaye Woods version with the exception that I don't use a serger and I do quilt the strips). The strips were long and that may be part of the issue.

Regardless, I thought about it, and decided to cut it in pieces that I would put back together to even out any uneveness. And that is what you are seeing. I still have more to do, and I am using the cut up quilt with the addition of a few new strips. I love the blue and green of this quilt, so far.

rryder 08-04-2016 02:11 PM

That's a cool modern quilt, slbram17. I like the colors and the layout.

I'm working on 3 small art pieces that are part of a collaboration that I'm doing with another artist. He does the drawing and I'm doing quilting, trapunto and decorative stitch work on them. I'm also working on an art quilt of my own, it's to the point where I need to decide how to present it----and I'm doing some quilted trivets in oblong casserole size and also in 8.5" square sizes to sell at a craft event I'm doing next week.

Will post pics if I manage to get some taken.

I am in. Can't sew all weekend. I AM GOING TO FINISH MY AMAZON STAR. Only one set of units left and then putting it together. If time permits, I will them quilt some on the Diamond Star Log Cabin. And do my 2 blocks for $5 quilt club. If there is still time leftover, will bind the DSLC...but don't think there will be any. Off to the sewing room!

I don't know what the quilt looked like before your cut it up. But, I think it looks fantastic like this. I also love the colors your working with.

This is great--we have a couple newcomers to VQW. And such a variety of projects people are working on. Krisb, can't wait to see your amazon star!

I finished a couple projects today. The first is a hexagon pillow, pattern is done by a friend of mine. The second project is Frivol #4.

I'm in, for once I'm at home on the VQW. Just finished this little gift for a baby shower. Will be making a quilt once the baby is born.

I have two quilt tops to sandwich and quilt and hope to get them done this weekend. Will post pictures tomorrow.

Well thank you. Sadly, the mint green material came from Hancocks during the last few weeks. So gonna miss that store, already missing it to be honest. The deep blue is a batik from who know? I have had it for a while. I love the batik. I had to purchase a lot of the white on white prints. I like the way it balances the quilt.

I work on this thing all the time, but not for long periods. I love the colors and it makes it more pleasant to work on.

Pretty projects, Raggiemom. Love the hexie pillow!

I have these together and it is too small for even a lap quilt. I need to find more fabric....

I'm in . Working on a helix quilt, a doll quilt with leaders and enders, and an ongoing string quilt, as the mood strikes. The helix quilt has a deadline, so if the mood doesn't strike on its own, I'll have to give it performance enhancement drugs.

QuiltingVagabond 08-04-2016 03:50 PM

I'll be in too! I have a Stitch and Fold wreath all cut and ready to sew and I am still quilting my Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt.
Love your hexie pillow raggiemom - I have the pattern but need the hex papers and am too lazy to cut them myself LOL

Yes, she is. There's something about quilts that seems to attract them, especially when I am trying to work on the quilt.

I will be sewing with you this weekend. I am working on two swap quilts. One for the August Mini swap and the other is for the Wall hanging swap. Lots of sewing in front of me.
peace

Perfect timing for me. I haven't sewn for probably 3 weeks, and am I ready! Not sure which UFO I will work on, but I will let you know. Thank you for hosting this.

So many pretty quilts!

This is my first one, I've done all hand stitching/quilting. I need to go back through and make sure I didn't miss anything (I have a few spots to quilt still, and may add "grass" or something in some of the areas that don't have any quilting. I used Warm and Natural, so can go 10", but I don't want to push it.)

I have to wait until Monday to start to bind it, one of the members here is going to teach me, but I've got blue, green, yellow and red fabric with dots that I'll cut into strips then sew together. I was going to go with just one color, but a lady in the fabric store convinced me to try a multi-color one :)

I'm back for this month. Below is a list of projects I may pick from to work on over the next 3 days.
- I plan to put borders on my AK Crossroad king size quilt. I have all of the blocks sewn and put together and ironed. Tomorrow I need to wash my fabric and sew the borders on.
- Work on wheelchair top for quilt give away.
- quilt Royals quilt top
- Quilt chewie's top (a quilt for my dog).
- work on my 2 1/2" log cabin batik blocks. Another king size quilt top. It should take me a while, I'm just starting.
- quilt 2 table runners and finish. (Fall and snowman).

sewbizgirl 08-04-2016 08:14 PM

Great color study quilt, McG... amazing that you found that many different solids, or did you dye your own?

Love the playmat quilt, Sleepy Hollow.

Happylab, you've got a full plate to sew from!

homefrontgirl 08-04-2016 08:40 PM

I'd love to join in if I may. I just joined the forum and I'm excited to see so many beautiful quilts. I'm a teacher and will be going back to school next week, so this weekend will be my last chance to really sew. I've got a king-sized log cabin top that is almost done. I need to add 1/2 of the last border on it and then I can decide how I want it quilted. I made a piano key border because I had so many strips left over, but apparently not enough so I have to run out and get more fabric. Oh well. I also have the pieces cut for a large one block wall hanging. I'd like to hand-quilt that since it's a small project.

Here's to great weekend sewing!

Perfect timing; I am headed to an actual retreat with a group of friends in a few hours! I was lucky enough to attend a retreat with this group in February, and it rekindled my love for quilting. And as a newly retired teacher, it will help take my mind off of the fact that for the first time since 1982, I am not spending August preparing a classroom and getting ready to return school. I plan on using some of my stash to make a couple of fall table runners, but since we will be checking out the local quilt shop, who knows what else I might find to work on!
Here are the fabrics I'll be using:

Sounds like a lot of good projects may get done this weekend. I have two race quilts to bind. Used up many 2 1/2 inch strips to complete these tops and will be given to nieces. Have fun everyone.

Waking on a baby gift. Double slice layer cake. Only one week till shower and speed is not my strong suit! Will use the power of the VQW to encourage me along! Thanks gang...
