Virtual Quilting Weekend--Feb 16-19, 2024

Setting this up early tonight so I don't forget! I hope there are lots of people quilting with me this weekend. I have a few more quilts to finish and get them off the upstairs railing. The backing order arrived from Marshall Dry Goods today so I can finish the patriotic quilt. Saturday is a Zoom guild sew-in which I am hosting. So I plan to work on some hand work during that. I have an in-person retreat in a month and have several more projects to prep for that. I'm thinking some panel quilts.

What are YOU working on this weekend? Any questions, please feel free to ask :)

Next VQW is March 15-17, 2024.

Sync 02-15-2024 04:03 PM

I'll be joining you this weekend. I want to get another UFO to the flimsy stage and pack for my upcoming trip.

thimblebug6000 02-15-2024 04:20 PM

I will be at a guild sew day tomorrow and will work on more Meal on Wheels placemats.

WMUTeach 02-15-2024 04:27 PM

I will be joining in also. So many little projects that are 80% finished. It is time to just get them done!!

Butterfly quilt - sew the binding to the back
Checkerboard Chain quilt - make more blocks
Pick out and cut the fabric for one baby quilt - make it quick and easy! Any ideas from the crowd are welcome.
Make two finished Cleopatra's Fan blocks! This one is NOT 80% finished. it is about 5% finished. Difficult block.

See you all on Saturday when I can report some progress.

cjsews 02-15-2024 05:15 PM

I am quilting a lap size quilt. Get it bound and washed is the goal for tomorrow. Then on to use some scraps. Not sure what I will do with them but, I have way too many scraps

Dedemac 02-15-2024 07:41 PM

I'm in also, I'll be doing some hand stitching and machine piecing. Here are what I want to concentrate on.

Hand sew binding down on my shades of gray quilt
Work on squaring pieces for the GFG
1 table topper finish the flimsy stage
1 table topper work on hand quilting
Do a few of the 365 challenge from 2016 :hunf:
And a few rows on a pair of socks that have been in the works for a few years.

Too many UFO's and PHD's!

paddingtonbear 02-16-2024 02:20 AM

I’ll be joining you!
l’d like to make a label for and finish the back stitching to the binding for my fire quilt.
Then I have to finish the stray threads on the front of the quilt and wash it.

Hi All!

I will be busy this weekend with my new Gd, 2 weeks old this week. Also having my other 2 grandchildren overnight while the parents have a belated Valentine's dinner. I will be lurking however to see all the progress you busy bees are making. I will be with you in spirit. Someone asked about a baby quilt pattern idea that is quick and easy. Here is my go to free pattern:
Quilt Taffy: Speedy Baby 2~Free Pattern

Ps. The post asking about a baby pattern I just read has been deleted...oh well enjoy this pattern if you need it.

aashley333 02-16-2024 02:49 AM

I'll be sewing strips of 1.25" squares for my latest pixel quilt, a nautilus sea shell. Each block has 100! I think I have completed 12 blocks. I purchased some small plastic bowls to organize colors, and they are working out wonderfully.

lindaschipper 02-16-2024 03:48 AM

I'll be finishing up my blocks for the Potato Chip Quilt that I'm working on and will hopefully get the blocks all sewn into making the quilt top. Maybe then I can shop for a backing. After that I'lll work on Spikes and Peaks as I alrady have half of the required blocks accoplished....or maybe it will be a 16 patch from scraps. My options are really kind of open for the next quilt. Oh....and today is my 72nd birthdayso I'll take a few hours off to celebrate with lunch out my husband.

The post is still there, #4. Thanks for the link, Copycat. I remember seeing that patterns and likely printed the speedy baby quilt years ago. I think I have it in a binder stored away for "someday". I will go a searching because "someday" is here. Thanks for the reminder!

I'm working on a "Spring Spin" from McCall's April/May 2016. I usually don't do the same quilt twice but I want to use up a piece of fabric for the backing and I had enough of the colors in scraps to piece the 42 pinwheels for the front and I know this is easy to longarm. Now I remember why I didn't use the backing fabric the first time around: I'm having to piece the backing to make it wide enough. Ah, the joys of working with what you have!!!

Dedemac 02-16-2024 05:25 AM

Happy Birthday Lindaschipper!!

Aashley333 looking forward to this next pixel quilt the seahorse was awesome.

Just checking in before my shower and a quick nosh, then starting the sashing on the table topper flimsy.

Happy sewing all.

pamelor 02-16-2024 06:12 AM

Ill try to join! Over last month's VQW I made a baby quilt top and all that was left to do was quilt and bind. the next weekend, my dad got sick and i have been in the hospital then long term care facility since then. No quilting has happened and the baby shower is tomorrow. Sooooo...I bought some baby clothes for a shower gift, and the quilt will get done soon I hope, at least before the baby comes. My friend understands of course. Maybe I can quilt and bind on sunday. Looking forward to hearing about other people's projects.

Finished last month's VQW just yesterday (Salsa Table Set)! Will start cutting today or tomorrow for my first full-size quilt (Vintage Checkerboard by Kristina Brinkerhoff from "Best of Moda Bake Shop").

rryder 02-16-2024 12:30 PM

Hi all,
I'll be joining in, but will mainly be straightening up my quilting studio- it's a mess. I've currently got the pieces and parts for 8 different projects pulled out and I need to decide on a single one to finish and put the rest away where they won't distract me. LOL

I am working on a military quilt for my husband. He was in the Navy aboard the USS Intrepid and I found this fabric with a panel of Aircraft stuff. This Aircraft Carrier is on display in New York and we got to go see it and tour it. My husband was treated like royalty as a past sailor on that ship. If ever in New York, be sure to go see it.

happylab 02-16-2024 01:03 PM

Good afternoon everyone.

My goals this weekend: Bind a king size quilt; rearrange my sewing room some more, where I can find my scrappy white fabric container. I need to finish the twin size traffic jam top (ufo), so it can go on my quilting list; Find my boxed up (ufo) - double Irish stars project and start working on it. Unsure if I will make it king size or twin size. My thought 2-3 years ago to enlarge to king size; cut out 1-2 dragon 🐉 kits, so I can start sewing. Quilt 2-3 baby tops for my friend; finally decide what BOM to start next week. I started collecting last year and have 1-2 that I can sew up the top in a month. Future quilts for family members. I figured what doesn’t get completed this weekend will be February projects to complete.

Enjoy sewing/quilting everyone. Chat with you later.

tallchick 02-16-2024 01:45 PM

I will pop in and out, working on the Simply Woven pattern. Looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

I got this lap quilt done. It is from leftovers from 2 previous quilts. I think I need to get Mom’s taxes done before I decide on next project.

Raggiemom 02-16-2024 04:35 PM

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with big plans for the weekend!

lindaschipper--Happy Birthday!

pamelor--I'm sorry about your dad, hopefully he's doing better.

I was at a meeting all morning so didn't get to do much until this afternoon. I have two quilts sandwiched and ready to quilt. Would love to have them finished by Tuesday. I machine bind so it is possible. Tomorrow I'll be working on hand work part of the day.

Finished the 7 blue placemats that I had started last sew day for Meals on Wheels, and made the 2 pink/red ones totally today. Our guild is trying to get more people donating by challenging us to use a colour a month. January was blue and Feb. was pink/red…. Not sure whether they will get more participation or not, as I was the only one working on them.

KathrynBock242 02-16-2024 05:32 PM

I will be joining you this weekend. My project will be working on finishing up my March block for the Crazy Quilt Journal Project 2024. Hugs Katie

pamelor 02-16-2024 06:28 PM

Cjsews, that is a stunning quilt! Really like the pattern.
thimblebug, the calming blue in your placemats is beautiful. The red ones are cute too!

paddingtonbear 02-17-2024 01:53 AM

Finished the label for DH’s quilt. He didn’t like the colour of it - I was trying a thicker material to see if my machine embroidery works better - it does but he didn’t like the white. 🙄. Will try again tomorrow but the embroidery will be a bit wonky as I only have thin cotton in the right blue.

Only have one side of the hand stitched binding to go! I have hidden all the thread ends (and there were many!)
🤞 I might finish this quilt tomorrow!

lindaschipper 02-17-2024 02:54 AM

A special thank you to Dedemac abd Raggiemom for the birthday wishes. Got a little sewing done, but a lot more cutting of fabric.
Lunch with my husband and phone calls from kids and friends Plus the mail lady left a post it note wishing me Happy Birthday, in our box after noticeing the birthday cards she was delivering. Who knew turning 72 could be so nice...LOL

I got a lot of sewing in yesterday-yea. Checked on Mom in the morning, and then hit the seafood store. (Fresh black drum, fried, for dinner. Shrimp for tonight!) After that, uninterrupted piecing. I don't know if it is the batik fabrics, but this pixel quilt is going together quickly. I'm happy with one block per day, but I am way ahead of schedule! Plus, I can see it coming together on the design wall.

Lena1952 02-17-2024 04:42 AM

I'm doing a bit of hand quilting on a rather large wool on cotton project. I have only a little hand quilting left to do and then to add a few embelishments and bind. This piece got set aside for about 3 years and I will be happy to say it is complete and off my To Do list.

Happy 72nd birthday Lindaschipper. My birthday is Sunday and I will be 72 too. I never thought I'd live to be this age, but it's grand :-)

Fun watching your progress on these pixel quilts! I had never heard of black drum, google says it is comparable to Red Snapper which we enjoy!

It's been a good day, but not quite the order I was expecting. I got the four blocks for the topper pressed and together then found some strips to frame it for the first border. I wanted a picture frame effect so same color family but different style of print. While looking thru a bin for a dark brown for the next border I ended up finding 70 HST's that were left over from one of my quilts about 2 years ago? Decided to finally sort the (To be sorted) bin and found some dark brown that would work but thought that I would press the HST's and see if they would work a a extra border. I'm leaning towards the ribbon stripe over the saw tooth. But will have to think more on it. I also was able to work on my DGS's kilt to resize it, I have it to the point that I have to sew the waist band back on but need to change thread color so was procrastinating on that.
DH just put dinner in the oven so after dinner I think we will sit in the family room and I will do some hand work. DH has been working out in his shop or in the music room today so I had space to play with fabric in the dinning room.
Here's a pic of the border options any suggestions? These are all orphan or left over blocks, so just sewing for fun.
Sorry the picture is a little dark.

Raggiemom 02-17-2024 04:12 PM

I like the left most border, reminds of a barbershop pole. You could mix it up since it's scrappy and do a different border on each side!

thimblebug6000--the placemats turned out lovely.

We had a good day at our virtual sew-in; there were eleven of us on zoom. I worked on some wool applique projects. Afterwards I tried to find a specific project in my sewing room for our upcoming retreat. Another quilter has the same pattern and she thought it would be nice if we worked on it together. Now I just have to find the applique pieces--I remember seeing them in December or January when I was cleaning. I wasn't planning to work on them for a while so I set them aside someplace safe

WMUTeach 02-17-2024 04:44 PM

I am happy as a clam, singing like a lark and pleased as punch. The butterfly baby quilt binding is on and waiting for its label.

I needed to get up and stretch so I went digging in my stash for a possible back for my Checkerboard Chain quilt and ta-da! I found a piece of very soft turquoise that will be just big enough. Will likely do a white binding.

Then.... I looked a little deeper in that bin of turquoise and I found a four yard cut of turquoise and very light blue batik that will work for my Pladdish quilt! Whoo Hoo! What a day! I went shopping and never left my house.

So my plans for tomorrow will shift to:
1. Add the label and finish the corner binding and into the wash for that baby quilt.
2. Do a final press for the Checkerboard Chain and cut the back and batting.
3. Take photos and post them here and start quilting the Checkerboard Chain.

Good weekend in my sewing room.
3.

Spent my morning running some errands and doing a bit a packing for our upcoming trip. I did get in some sewing time ...... I finally put the last row on my Jewel Box Star, finished 2 more blocks for my Indigo Way and added blocks to my leader-ender project. Tomorrow I'll work on making binding for the Jewel Box Star top, baste some more hexies so I'll have some EPP to do while we travel, and try to get a couple more Indigo Way blocks done.

paddingtonbear 02-18-2024 02:31 AM

@Dedemac i also like the left hand border. It is less busy and suits the quilt IMO.

I thought I’d finished DH’s quilt when I sewed on the border and label but he also wants some Firebrigade patches sewn on. Another few hours sewing then I can wash it.

paddingtonbear 02-18-2024 02:34 AM

@aashley333 your pixel quilt looks amazing so far!

Lena1952...thank you for the birthday wishes, and Happy Birthday to you also.

lindaschipper 02-18-2024 04:19 AM

SYNC.....love the blocks you have made and are laying on the little table. But I googled both patterns you mentioned and they are neither one of those. Can you share the pattern name with me....I have so many strips and blocks already cut and stored away that this pattern would be perfect for. Please?

Lena1952 02-18-2024 04:40 AM

The wool and cotton WH project I was working on is finished. YAY! I might find some time today to sew bindings on Comfort quilts for my guild today or do some cutting for a Kim Diehl quilt that is in the works. Keep Sewing ladies.
