Virtual Quilting Weekend--Jan 12-15, 2024

Good evening all! Welcome to our January VQW I have several hanging sleeves to stitch down this weekend. For some reason, I really don't like doing hanging sleeves but Mom wants them on all her wall hangings. So hopefully get that done this weekend as my plan is to ship to her Tuesday. I also have three small wall hangings for myself that just need to be bound. Once that's done I will start working on the eleven pillow cases that are cut and ready to go. Ambitious plans!

So what are you working on this weekend? And for anyone who is new--Virtual Quilting Weekend (VQW) is where we share our quilting plans for the weekend and pictures if you're able to upload them. Or if you don't feel like quilting, just join us anyway! There are no quilt police here :)

Next regular VQW will be February 16-19, 2024. If there is interest, I will do a thread for Super Bowl Sunday, probably start it about 8 that morning. Just let me know!

Sync 01-11-2024 04:12 PM

I'm in for the weekend. I work on Friday but then have a 3 day weekend ....... so I plan to work on my Jewel Box Stars and hopefully get it a lot closer to being a flimsy. Also putiing blocks together for my BH winter mystery.

cjsews 01-11-2024 04:23 PM

I am working on a scrap quilt. Trying to get the quilting done so I can work on binding during quilt guild this weekend. Company is passing thru so that will slow things down a bit.

Iceblossom 01-12-2024 02:22 AM

Another VQW! Thanks as always, Heather.

I am up in the middle of the night, or at least 4 AM my time. The expected snow storm is coming down, forecast says 3" or so, I think we are at least halfway there. Is dry little flecks of snow, not big fancy snowflakes. May change to rain mid-day to really freeze stuff up overnight. But we are here at home with plenty of groceries and coffee.

I am still working on my Bonnie Hunter project, I don't seem to be moving very fast this year. It is better now that I have options for music and sound downstairs -- I think I will do my first step of the day (pressing) while listening to my latest audio book to keep me company. Goal for today is to get the alternate blocks done, should be easily doable if I can stay on track for a couple hours. Still have a long way to go before I have the top done... once the alternate blocks are finished I might switch back to my Christmas String quilt border, seems fitting for the snow!

Rff1010 01-12-2024 02:46 AM

I'm in! 2 projects (for now) - some Bonnie Hunter work and a friend's project on the longarm. She uses exclusively fleece for backing which I've never done on the longarm. It's a smaller charity quilt.

:)Happy VQW weekend everyone! Thank you Raggiemom for hosting.

Have you ever had a quilt pattern you hesitate to start because it's out of your comfort zone? I am cutting out paper templates that I have to tape together to get the whole shape, being careful to match the lines in between the pieces. Next, I have to trace the pieced paper template shape onto cardstock. Plastic template sheets aren't large enough to use for these large shapes. I thought about freezer paper vs. cardstock. I am making a rainbow quilt for my soon to be granddaughter. I will trace the Rainbow Arc templates onto fabric and cut them out. I will be sewing curves, so wish me luck.

WMUTeach 01-12-2024 03:14 AM

In again! One quilt on my "To Do List". I need to finish two additional blocks and then begin the sashing process on those blocks. Should that top be finished, there is a an abundance of other projections that can jump under my needle. ;)

sschick 01-12-2024 04:04 AM

Alas, I won't be working on any quilts for awhile, but I will be "crafting." My aunt sent me a mink stole which she would like me to make a teddy bear out of. I used to make them all the time before getting interested in quilting. I also have music for a string concert to practice. I play cello in a community orchestra so that also takes up time.

Shari

Lena1952 01-12-2024 05:01 AM

I'm in. I hope to quilt a class sample, but most likely will still be in clean mode. I have been going through my accumulation of "stuff" in my studio. Five full days so far and I am at the stage of putting the things I'm keeping away. I have to say the space is looking great!

QuiltMom2 01-12-2024 05:31 AM

Count me in! I'm on the home stretch of quilting a full-size scrappy mountain majesties, except I need to figure out what to do for binding. I picked up a little last night and I'm ready to roll!

pamelor 01-12-2024 06:06 AM

Can I join? This is Pam from Seattle. It is baby quilt weekend for me. I picked out yellow and greens, my giftee's favorite colors, cut strips for a log cabin, laid out and really don't like the the result! Ugh. Even my boyfriend who is color-challenged said the colors don't work. (Or, maybe he was just agreeing with me to shut me up.) So, back to the drawing board for different colors and maybe a different design.

Janice McC 01-12-2024 06:06 AM

I'll jump in! First timer. I've got to bind a small donation quilt. It's been machine stitched to the front but I need to finish the back by hand. Also, I'm making some crumb blocks for another donation quilt. Hope to have another dozen or so done by the end of the weekend. Been having skipped stitches so I do need to solve that again. Something to do with when the bobbin is low on thread, it seems to jump around and skip. I'll be testing that theory this weekend.

Have a good weekend all!

Quiltah Mama 01-12-2024 06:19 AM

I am so in. I have been waiting for this VQW. I have a four day weekend, it's going to snow tomorrow 😀, perfect cumulative VQW..... I have 12 more pillow fronts to stencil, I will then have 84 completed, that is two orders ready to go for May when my orders begin for the hit TV show Maine Cabin Masters. Their busy season at their store in Manchester Maine is May-October. I always try and get a few orders ahead during their off season. The rest of the backing for these last few is out for delivery per my tracking this morning. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point.
I already have my next project planned out. I ordered some grunge fabric from M*, got an email that says that is ready to ship. I have three panels I plan to add borders around for lap size quilts. I'm thinking of adding some twister tool blocks to break it up and add visual interest. I have the panels and twister tool together just waiting for the grunge fabric to arrive.
If I get the pillows completed as I'm hoping to accomplish this VQW, I'm thinking about making some pillow case kits to use up my small Christmas fabric stash that I seriously dought I will ever use in a quilt, then I'll donate them once sewn.
Can't wait to check in on and off over the weekend and see what everyone is working on, happy sewing everyone. I know I myself and I can tell by reading others post, we look forward to these when we are able to participate or even just to read for motivation if life is to busy to sew during VQW. Thank you Heather for hosting this monthly and for special occasions, it sure is a great way to keep motivated.

Yea! I will be FMQing the background of Mrs. Seahorse. I quilted her with a loopy meander; I think that works best on those 3/4" pixel squares. I spent days drawing the scrolls for the background. The markers kept drying out, so I used 3 different colors! I found that by marking the quilt all over, I developed muscle memory for the stitching!

Cam's gram 01-12-2024 07:35 AM

I’m in. Just got the final fabric for my 3 QOV. Plan on finishing cutting the fabric, finish marking all the square for flying geese and start sewing. Good weekend for it, we’re expecting 8-12” of snow Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

sschick – Many years ago my DM asked me to take my favorite aunt’s mink jacket to the Salvation Army but I had to get it when she was gone (obviously still very emotionally attached). I asked her if she cared what I did with it and she said no. We had an art fair and I found a lady that made the exact type of bear I wanted. I gave the bigger one to my Mom and she cherished it. I kept the smaller one. When Mom passed, it came back to me. They now reside. in our great room in an antique highchair (1883) from DH’s family and still are very much cherished.

I have been working on 2 baby quilts, the first one a zigzag from crazymomquilts blog and the second one a warm wishes pattern. Finished the hand stitching on the binding of the zigzag yesterday and hope to sandwich the warm wishes this weekend. Thanks for hosting!

DoBeeDoQuilts 01-12-2024 08:52 AM

After we finish taking down the Christmas decorations, I will be figuring out what I want to take on my guild's quilting retreat which starts next Thursday. Always a big decision as I have lots of UFOs but I really have my eye on a couple of new, smaller Valentine's Day projects. What to bring? Maybe a little of both!

Watson 01-12-2024 11:30 AM

I absolutely need to do a binding of some description on an art quilt that I want to enter in Quilt Canada.
I am going to work on designing a different block for a Christmas tree skirt pattern that I bought, because the one paper pieced star block that came with it I am not enjoying doing at all. And I also think that it looks too formal for me. I am thinking of making wonky stars, instead.

Watson

Dedemac 01-12-2024 12:10 PM

I will be in and out this weekend, I have my running done for the day and need to finish putting away the Christmas decorations also, then after a quick clean of the house then I can finish the room divider for our parlor off the kitchen. That room is basically unheated (just one register and no return) and it gets cold in the middle of the winter. The one I did last year ended up shrinking after I washed it and I am adding 5 more orphan blocks to it, Sunday and Monday I have donation quilts to do and one quilt to finish hand binding. I should be able to sew some tomorrow after our dinner company leaves.
Thanks as always Heather.

michelem 01-12-2024 01:05 PM

My first VQW! I’m trying to finish up a quilt of valor pattern called flying flags. I’ve been sewing strip sets together and am ready to start making the blocks.

I got the rest of the pillow fronts stencilled. I have a make shift line in the basement to hang them on. Got a cat in the house and I will no take a chance leaving the wet paint laying flat to dry. 😻 Tomorrow I will trim and cut the backing and hopefully get some sewn.

Good freezing cold Friday to everyone. Yes, I would love an extra Super Bowl Sunday weekend VQW ( I know you said one day).
Thank you Heather for hosting these VQWs. I greatly appreciate them.

well yes, I’m in. I’m still working on quilting the r/w/blk top. I have made progress from last month. It’s ready to be quilted. I just need to wash the backing fabric and quilt on Monday. I also need to cut out the batting. I had bought a red fabric for the backing, but it was so stiff after I washed the fabric, so I bought flannel fabric and do need to wash this fabric due to shrinkage. The I will use black fabric to bind. So I plan to quilt on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a king size top. 95L by 118” W. In the mean time I will be watching chiefs and the other team on Saturday and 3 games on Sunday. It’s the wildcard to super ball playoffs. 1st weekend of this. Our weather may help us win this game. Game time temp 0 to -8F. And very windy. It’s an outdoor stadium. I also plan to sew 2 king size chiefs pillowcases (one for us and 1 for my niece so. And cut out a few more quilting projects. I find if I cut out the pieces for the top I can sew faster. Oh well on to sewing/quilting. Try to stay warm everyone.

Raggiemom 01-12-2024 03:20 PM

Its been quite rainy and cold here today too but we're not having a blizzard thank goodness. For those of you in the path of these storms, I hope the power stays on and you stay safe.

copycat--good luck on sewing curves. I still struggle with that but it may be my lack of patience!

sschick--would love to see your teddy bears when done.

pamelor, JaniceMcC, michelem--welcome, we are glad to have you join us. And welcome to any other newcomers I may have missed :)

DoBeeDoQuilts--I hope you have a wonderful time on your retreat.

I got hanging sleeves stitched down on three wall hangings today, hope to get one more done tonight. Spent much of the afternoon on the phone with my mom, we're tentatively planning to head west to Yellowstone in June so we were discussing routes, where to stay, what to see.

Will check back in tomorrow :),

Just heard something interesting about “comfort zone”. Term refers to temp that is neither hot nor cold, or “luck”. For food that could be boring. For enthusiasm could be boring. Maybe getting out of comfort zone could be challenging and exciting.

If you don’t like Bible, please skip this. Rev 3:10 says “because you are lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

So, a little challenge might be good. Just not scalding hot.

Just checking in before bed, DH is still playing music at a friends but I have run out of steam for sewing. I got the room divider almost finished, just have to put some binding on the long edges. But for the night since the low tonight is 5 degrees I put it up to help keep the house warmer. I will post a picture tomorrow after guests leave.

Petthefabric and thimblebug - Love the pictures!
aashley333 - can't wait until the seahorse is finished.
Shari I would also love to see the bear when you are done.
Goodnight and happy sewing.

aashley333 01-13-2024 03:29 AM

Good morning, all!
Your projects are so industrious! Love the scrap quilt! And a mink bear! How cool.
Well, yesterday, the temp was in the 60s, and the wind blew 50 mph! I was so sure we were going to lose electricity. We did not, but now we are preparing for the hard freeze on Monday and Tuesday. We are tropical and aren't used to cold. And my Cowboys are going to have to play in colder temperatures!
I plan to finish, yes, finish, quilting this huge seahorse quilt!! After that, I am going to sandwich my temperature quilt, which is already marked for quilting-while I decide how to bind it. I am loving my new longarm!

Good chilly morning from WNC. I'm enjoying seeing and hearing about your projects. Last night I made great progress on my crumb blocks. Whipped out 20 centers in no time to add to some others I made months ago but didn’t touch my little quilt that needs the binding finished. Pics are attached. Have a fine, quilty day!

WMUTeach 01-13-2024 07:35 AM

I have been making process on my checkerboard/rainbow quilt. All blocks done and have begun adding sashing. Pictures tomorrow but not outside. It is 17 degrees and temps dropping. Not like the Dakotas but still pretty cold and getting colder. I will be hiding out in my sewing room where it is warm and close to the electric tea kettle.

Iceblossom 01-13-2024 07:37 AM

Nice to see some new names as well as the VQW regulars :)

It is cold here, tonight it is expected to be below zero. Is all very interesting to us as this is our first year here. We do have about 6" of snow total.

I have my Bonnie Hunter blocks done and the floor of the empty bedroom swept and cleared off, will be laying out the top today. I safety pin little Row/Column (A1, etc) markers in the upper left hand corner of each block because no matter how careful I am, I drop the stack or the pets mess it up or something happens. It is a large quilt and even without borders the blocks don't fit on my queen sized bed.

Raggiemom 01-13-2024 08:16 AM

aashley333--glad you didn't lose electricity!

Janice McC--pretty blocks!

WMUTeach--we're feeling like 5 degrees here. Brrr!

I finished sewing down the hanging sleeves. I'm headed to my sewing room to FMQ two St Patricks' Day wall hangings and then stitch those sleeves. I made a potato salad this morning to go with the chicken roasting in the crock pot. Not sure why I made a cold salad when it's so cold outside but it's what sounded good and used up the rest of the eggs and potatoes. I'm thinking about throwing an apple cobbler in the oven for supper too. We'll see how much I get done in sewing room first :)

pamelor 01-13-2024 08:49 AM

Thank you for the welcome! My second attempt at baby quilt is going much better. I picked fewer colors and not ALL bright so it's not so clashy. If I can get it done, it will be on to some kind of chair covering for my dad's recliner. It's about 20 degrees in Seattle which is normal for many of you but freezing for us! I kind of like it -- it's a nice change from rain.

Cam's gram 01-13-2024 09:13 AM

Janice McC – such pretties!

Petthefabric – great quilts! Perfect border for the Merry Mayhem.

We got 10 inches of wet, heavy snow. Our power went out last night is and is still out. Got to love the whole house generators. This township is notorious for power outages but this time there are a lot of outages in the area. Tree fell on neighbor’s house just a bit ago.

This project, three quilts of valor, is the first time I have cut everything before starting and am doing each step totally before moving to the next. Finished cutting the last fabric yesterday and marked a lot of squares for flying geese. Going to finish marking the squares and then start sewing.

Raggiemom 01-13-2024 03:24 PM

pamelor--20 degrees is freezing in Seattle I would imagine. I think it's cold here in Cincinnati at 20 although we do get several days in January every year.

Cam's gram--I hope the power comes back on soon for you.

I finished the two St Patrick's Day wall hangings. And I started working on my little gnome hangings. I would have had six completed tonight but the machine decided to throw a temper tantrum and I didn't feel like monkeying with it. So I'll try tomorrow afternoon. Tonight I've turned on a Disney cartoon for background noise and will see where I am in several hand work projects.

So I'll check back in tomorrow afternoon and see what everyone is up to. I'm going to run to Meijer's first thing in the morning and pick up groceries.

I have been beavering away all day and have my weekend project half finished. I just need to add the other three rows of blocks and the sashing to call the top finished. Layering and quilting will most likely come next month.. Another hour or so, and I will step away from the sewing machine for a bit of football or a Netflix movie.

Nothing to do outside except watch snow pile up. Good day to dedicate to using up 2.5s and other scraps.

Most of my morning and part of the afternoon were spent running errands so not so much sewing today. But when I did get to sew, my machine decided to act up! So I stopped and put aside all the pieces that need to be ripped and will get to it tomorrow.
Now I'm working on my hexies - hand piecing.
