copycat 01-16-2021 03:23 AM

The Fat Quarter Baby Book I ordered from Connecting Threads arrived yesterday. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png I have so many baby quilt patterns saved, but I really wanted to make the whale quilt I saw in this book for my niece expecting a baby boy in June. I will look for fabric in my stash and begin to cut the pattern out.....after I put up my Christmas decorations lining the hallway to my sewing room. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png

Panchita 01-16-2021 07:09 AM

Thank you Rob https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png. It's a Mary Hertel pattern - foundation piecing, which is... not my favourite. But I'm happy with the result.

I am very pleased to say that I've actually completed the DSM quilting. The quality of the quilting is variable, but it's only my second time and I'm learning, so I'll keep it. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png I've actually managed to trim it down, cut the access and hole, and attached one side of the binding (by machine, I'll do the other side by hand). So that feels fabulous!!

I've now moved on to working on fabric bags (to replace - at least some - paper wrapping *next* Christmas).

Of course what I probably should be doing is, like copycat, dealing with putting away Christmas decorations. They're down and re-boxed (mainly) and just need taking upstairs to the cupboard... Probably not going to happen today https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/tongue.png I do love the sound of the whale quilt though. DS loves 'the Snail and the Whale' book.

Happy quilting everyone!

QuiltMom2 01-16-2021 07:30 AM

I've read with interest what everyone's doing. I finished piecing the top of a large scrap four-patch, comes out about 102" square. Now, I need to piece the back and get it loaded on longarm. I usually start my day with sewing a few four patches in the unending task of keeping the scrap bins under control. Happy sewing everyone.

I see every is making progress! Got the baby quilt cut out except for the body of one sloth and first block is made. The quilt is 6 big blocks and a border. We visited the newest member of our family (DGGS#2) yesterday. Everyone is doing fine and big brother (DGGS#1, 21months) thinks having a baby brother is great!

Love your tree skirt Panchita, and thanks for making the effort to get your picture to post!

sewingitalltogether 01-16-2021 09:00 AM

Good morning,
I will be joining you this weekend. Sewing on a quilt for my daughter. It’s called Protea by Laura Heine. Lots of steam a seam and little scraps. I have one more flower to do. I’m sewing around each piece with invisible thread in a shorter and narrow stitch.
I’ll post a picture in a minute.
Gail

sewbizgirl 01-16-2021 09:04 AM

I can see the tree skirt just fine... so cute. I wish more people would post photos of what they are working on. It would be great to have more photos in this thread!

sewbizgirl 01-16-2021 09:07 AM

That sloth block is adorable!

Saturday Update

Well, haven't gotten quite as much done as I had hoped, I ended up getting sidetracked in my kitchen longer than I was hoping. I've been promising the fiancé a batch of peanut brittle for weeks and had to calibrate a new digital thermometer and then stand over the stove for an hour to get it cooked up. Turned out beautifully, I'm beyond thrilled because I gave up candy making for the holidays a few years back after a number of issues cropped up. I'm famous for my sea salt crusted milk caramels and I horrendously burned a batch and it separated, then didn't cook it long enough the second go-round and burned it a third time. I figured it was a sign and just gave up but now I'm back on track!

I've been working on the Bridge sampler and I have a new helper to keep me on track, why I didn't get a needle minder before now is beyond me. Hoping tomorrow I will be able to play with the rulers, I might later today but not sure what the fiancé has planned.

Karamarie 01-16-2021 12:42 PM

I've watched enough videos now on making T-shirt quilts, so jumped in yesterday and starting cutting the T-shirt emblems out. Had some interfacing and used what I had and added that to T-shirts. It is going well.

I finished my valentine wall hanging and I also made a table runner. There is enough fabric left to make placemats so those I will work on tomorrow. Now it's time to settle down in front of the tv to watch the Green Bay Packers...Go Pack!!!

Railroadersbrat,
I too am trying to learn to use rulers.

I too am trying to learn rulers. This weekend: bind flannel Christmas quilt; clean up sewing corner; start cuddle blanket; make blue table runner.

The blue and green flannel rag quilt has 40 10" squares with ruler work in each.

I finished binding the flannel Christmas quilt. 40 squares with extra batting behind the ruler work.

I got this far today. There are still a couple of borders if I follow the pattern. I swapped yellow for orange and used a dark teal for the corners of the Ohio stars instead of greens.

WOW, thank you all for the pictures!! Isn't that ten times more fun than just words?

Here is my work du jour... squares cut and stacked for the Birthday Swap. Although you see my Accuquilt out, I didn't use it because I didn't have the right die. I cut my squares by hand, some from scraps and some from strips.

sewbizgirl 01-16-2021 04:05 PM

Watson, you have such a terrific grasp on fabric and color! Love your matchstick quilting too.

Sewing, the proteas are gorgeous! Coming from Hawaii, I would say the big flowers look totally real. I have never seen any buds before, but the flowers are amazing!

Quilting V, your BH quilt is a work of art! So many pieces...

pbraun, good job with the ruler quilting. I love Square in a Square!

Cheese, pretty Valentine decs!

Quiltah Mama 01-16-2021 04:20 PM

Panchita, love your tree skirt, so glad you were able to upload the picture.👍

Raggiemom 01-16-2021 05:01 PM

Rff1010—could you drop off the blocks at her house? Shabby Fabrics and Pat Sloan both have good videos showing machine appliqué.

sewbizgirl—2 out of 9 is quite impressive!

Cam’s Gram—sloth is cute

pbraun—ruler work looks good

I didn’t do any quilting today but did work on the fat quarter cabinet. Hopefully will finish that tomorrow. I baked a couple batches of cookies today 😋

Sunday morning update: I am in a Whoo Hoo kind of mood!
1. Finish pillow for my granddaughter (No progress https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wave.gif )
2. Make more 4x4 grids squares (16 squares each) from my 2.5" squares - Goal of 50 (26 new ones finished, Found an additional 22 blue 16 patches from another project that did not get off the ground.)
3. Add binding to brown quilt and maybe hand stitch it to the back. (Got the binding on and now am hand sewing it to the back.)

So many wonderful finishes and photos of progress! We are busy, busy, busy this week-end. After virtual church and a Zoom meeting with friends, I will be back to joining you all at the sewing machine.

Quiltah Mama 01-17-2021 03:55 AM

Cheese, great wall hanging, that is beautiful, as is your table runner.

PBraun, great ruler work, like the pattern for each block. And I like your rag quilt too. They are fun to make, just messy during the first few wash/dry cycles.

Vagabond, that is looking great so far. Beautiful quilt.

lindaschipper 01-17-2021 05:33 AM

I did manage to get my two Project Linus quilts completed, but my L-4 vertebrae is screaming at me so it looks like my thread spool quilt won't get done this weekend. Instead it appears that I'll be leaning back on an ice pack and maybe be able to cross stitch.

Quilting is supposed to be fun. If you are in pain...it's no fun. Take care of yourself!

QuiltMom2 01-17-2021 05:48 AM

Update: Backing pieced and loaded on longarm, batting pieced, still marking borders to be quilted on the 102" square four patch. Transferring designs is not my favorite thing to do hence the slowdown.

Sunday Update

Slow start for today, spent the first hour after I woke up looking for my Aleve because my arthritis was letting me know that it was still alive and kicking.

Panel four of the Bridge is done, I was able to finish it late last night when the fiancé was cooking dinner. I started panel five directly after, so coming down the home stretch with the sampler now - only one more panel after this one. I'm excited!

Will probably dig out my rulers and play with them later today, my brittle came out so good that I'm thinking of tackling my sea salt crusted milk caramels today. I've missed making candy and now that it seems like I have everything going in the right direction, I'm super stoked.

Jordan 01-17-2021 06:50 AM

I am working on making some small design boards that I just saw a tutorial from Lori Holt from Bee in my Bonnet (I think that is her quilt website). Also, just received the pattern for the elephant (Stomping Ground) and I am getting fabrics gathered for that. I have made one block and it is fun but very small pieces.

Cheesehead 01-17-2021 06:53 AM

Railroadersbrat, that counted cross stitch pattern is coming along beautifully! In the past I loved to do counted cross stitch and after seeing your project, I am tempted to begin with a small pattern.

Conchalea 01-17-2021 06:56 AM

No pictures yet, but K & I finished the Ripple flimsy yesterday! She had a Zoom meeting in the afternoon so we didnt get it sandwiched as planned. She & her DH are coming here this am so he can clean my solar panels & fix a leak in my bathroom. We had high winds on Friday that brought in lots of Panhandle dust & it reduced the efficiency of their solar panels & mine. Then we will be able to sandwich my quilt & she can work on ruler quilting hers.

rryder 01-17-2021 06:58 AM

Watson- your matchstick quilting looks awesome!

Loving the proteas- Sewing!

PBraun- ruler quilting is lots of fun. Yours is looking good!

I finished the 16 patches yesterday and got three rows stittched together and to each other. Will finish stitching rows together todayx Yay! Then I need to decide on borders, but I may take a break from it and work on Magic Mushrooms...

Rob

Karamarie 01-17-2021 08:21 AM

pbraun, you are doing great with your rulers.

tropit 01-17-2021 10:15 AM

Shoot! I almost missed it! I was thinking that it would be next weekend. OK, I can still participate today and tomorrow. I'm still doing the same thing quilting the wood grain pattern on a big quilt. I'm about 2/3 done. I'll get on that today. I also have a quilt that is done, but needs binding. I hope to finish that this weekend too. Lastly, I'm starting on some slipcovers for a loveseat. The fabric came the other day. Perhaps I can get some of the pieces cut out and ready for assembly.

Happy sewing everyone!

tropit 01-17-2021 11:09 AM

I hate to post all of my positive comments on one post, it seems rude to me, but it is warm and sunny out and the dogs are looking at me with their big, brown eyes, hoping I'll take them out for a romp, so here goes. The dogs win out on this one. One, long, post. I sincerely mean every word. The work that is displayed on the VQWs is just so amazing and inspiring:

Jmore…love the colorful quilt, crazy colors, but orderly layout…nice!

Luvstoquilt…Your, “Wild Goose Chase,” quilt looks very intricate…gorgeous!

Panchita…the red truck skirt is so sweet! I need to make a tree skirt…later in the year.

Cam’s Gram…The sloth is wonderful! Is that an Elizabeth Hartman pattern? I love all of her animal motifs.

Sewingitalltogether…That’s beautiful and unique. I really love anything with nature/plants incorporated into a quilt.

Railroadersbrat…is the, “needleminder,” the kitty thing in the picture?

Cheesehead…Your valentine projects are so pretty. A packers fan…obviously. 😊

Watson…The matchstick filler looks amazing to me…not funky at all. I love the dusky colors you’ve chosen.

Pbraun…love your quilt. It would look just lovely on my bed. 😊 As for the Christmas quilting…ruler work, working with flannel, extra batting…lots of skill involved. Looks great!

QuiltingVagabond…wow…it’s beautiful!

Sewbizgirl…I like the red and white print.

sewbizgirl 01-17-2021 11:19 AM

RRBrat, your cross stitch made me cry. It's unfathomable how much our pets love us and we never seem to give them all the attention they deserve!

Finished my sampler quilt. Top was completed in my introduction to quilting class in late 2019. I quilted it on my new long arm with my first pantograph and a bit of FMQ in the central block. Finished machine binding it this weekend. Also finished my small appliqué quilt needed for my Road To CA class next weekend!

sewbizgirl 01-17-2021 12:49 PM

Both of those are pretty, leheath8, but I love the little tree frog! Nice work with your longarm.

Busy weekend for me. Got all 14 of my flowers together. They are ironed on and ready to be sewn down. Also added 2 birds, not on the pattern, I just like them.
Love the pictures of everyone’s projects.

Lots of inspiring work posted, thanks everyone! I finished the scrappy top last night, the one block is Bonnie Hunter's leader/ender but I alternated it with a snowball to calm it down a little https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png Lunch break is over so will get back to piecing a backing for it now.

Raggiemom 01-17-2021 04:30 PM

lindaschipper and railroadersbrat--hope you're both feeling better.

Well, as expected today, I didn't do any quilting but did finish sorting/organizing the FQ cabinet. I have fabric pulled for 10 charity quilts to make in the next couple months. Tomorrow I hope to have a little time in the sewing room. I knew I wouldn't be in the sewing room much this weekend; have too much house stuff planned. But I would like to start stitching down an applique block. We'll see how that goes :)
