Virtual Quilting Weekend--Jan 15-18, 2021

Welcome to the January regular VQW. Hope you've been productive and having fun since we last "met" a few weeks ago. I'm not sure exactly what I'm working on this weekend. I have several WIPs plus a couple block of the week clues to do. And I suppose I could pick up some. It seems like that task is never-ending! It probably doesn't help that I dumped half of my FQ cabinet on the floor looking for something. At the least, I should put those away :)

So what are all of you working on this weekend? I think one of my goals will be to figure out how to upload a picture on here. I have done it in past so should be able to do it again.

Next VQW will be February 12-15/

froggyinNewMexco 01-14-2021 04:29 PM

I believe I will make a back for a small Valentine quilt and get it to the long armer to see what she can do with it.

leheath8 01-14-2021 04:34 PM

I'll be doing the prep work for some virtual classes I'll be taking next Friday and Saturday through the Road to CA virtual quilt show. If I get done with that (which I might since it's a long weekend!), I'll continue to work on assembling my Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. I'd also like to bind the quilt I just finished quilting on my long arm, but that may be beyond what I can fit into a 3 day weekend!

WMUTeach 01-14-2021 04:47 PM

I will be joining in the weekend of sewing off and on over the week-end between doing other important tasks for work and around the house.
1. Finish pillow for my granddaugher
2. Make more 4x4 grids squares (16 squares each) from my 2.5" squares - Goal of 50
3. Add binding to brown quilt and maybe hand stitch it to the back.

Conchalea 01-14-2021 05:13 PM

I'll be joining in, trying to finish the Ripple quilt which is a free jelly roll pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop. My daughter has surgery scheduled for Jan 22 & I want to give her this quilt as a comfort quilt. I may also work on piecing the back for my RWB project.

QuiltingVagabond 01-14-2021 05:16 PM

Hi Heather and all VQWers, I have been making Dear Jane blocks this week but now I am switching back to the finish of Grassy Creek (Bonnie Hunter mystery). I'd love to get the top done but that may be a little optimistic.

cjsews 01-14-2021 05:26 PM

I am working on a Christmas log cabin. No not last year. Blocks are done and ready to lay out. I also want to make some quick rag quilts for grandkids.

Hello Miss Heather and all our fantabulous quilting buddies! Thank you again for hosting, always love these long weekends!

I'm hoping to get to know my new quilting rulers. I pre-ordered them in December and they finally showed up in the mail yesterday. Considering they landed just before a VQW, I'm going to take that as a sign, lol.

Also going to be doing some re-arranging and re-organizing of my quilting corner, I got the fiancé a rock tumbler for an early birthday gift (it's not until February, but we had extra cash, thanks to the stimulus, so I pulled the trigger and got it), only problem is now he's been slowly invading my spot! The table I use to cut from yardage is completely covered with his rocks and the rock tumbler is now a source of white noise for me. I don't mind sharing the room, I like that we both have hobbies that keeps us in the same room and we can do things together, but I can barely move in my corner now, so things have to get adjusting again.

Other than that, still working on the Rainbow Bridge - I started to get bored out of nowhere and started another sampler, but plan to get back to the Bridge this weekend. Super excited I got the rulers, though, it's going to be fun to play with them!

Rff1010 01-15-2021 03:54 AM

I'm making some zipper bags and some applique bears as cornerstones for a bearpaw pattern.

I lost some sew-jo on a RWB and I'm trying to decide if I should officially UFO the blocks to get some patience and perspective.

Once the bearpaw is done I have it and another to sandwich and quilt....but that may be too much for a wknd- even this one!

Woohoo...I love it when I get to join in on VQW. DH is going to Massachusetts this weekend to care for his 100 yr old mother. I usually go to help but I have a real estate client appointment Saturday morning so I get the whole house to myself all weekend...I don’t have to cook or clean up after someone else. LOL

I just finished quilting and binding my Merry Mayhem mystery and will put a label on it today so I can get it in the mail for a dear friend’s birthday. I just finished a charity quilt top and will load it on the LA to get it done and out of my way. I am making 16 patch blocks for another scrap project in the Debbie Brown quilt along group.

lindaschipper 01-15-2021 04:51 AM

Today (Friday) I hope to be able to quilt a Project Linus project and get the binding on that has been laying around since my machine was in the shop. Then this weekend I can load my Spool quilt on the frame and get it done also. This is on based on the hope that my back and L 4 vertebrae hold out. If not I'll have to sit with an ice pack on my lower back....and that is a good time to cross stitch.

tallchick 01-15-2021 05:08 AM

Thanks for hosting again Heather! I will be joining and working on Grassy Creek. I have everything cut out, one block and the sashing already pieced and up on my design wall to make sure I'm happy with my final choices. I really wanted to avoid bed size quilts this year, but obviously I have failed. I love these weekends, its always great to see what everyone is working on.

Raggiemom 01-15-2021 05:20 AM

Good morning (rainy and dreary as it is).

railroadersbrat--you are reminding me that I have rulers I should experiment with at some point. That is actually one of my goals this year. I hope you enjoy trying out yours. And what is a rock tumbler?

Rff1010--sometimes it really helps to step back from a project for a bit. When you pick up again, perhaps you'll have a different perspective.

lindaschipper--hope your back cooperates this weekend

I'm off to my sewing room in a couple minutes to see what I should do first.

Panchita 01-15-2021 05:47 AM

Hi Everyone!

I hope to join you for a chunk of the weekend. I have my Little Red Truck Christmas skirt pieced together and basted into a quilt sandwich, so I plan to machine quilt it this weekend (or at least start!). This will be my second-ever attempt at quilting on a DSM - my first attempt was about a month ago (?) and was the backing to a project bag. So this is somewhat bigger, and we'll see how we go... I plan on trying to do the serpentine stitch, and have been playing about on my machine figuring out the best settings for the effect I want. Any tips appreciated!

I also need to figure out how to transfer photos from my new phone to my computer so that I can upload them here. Hoping it will be fairly straightforward.

I suspect that that will account for all of the time I have for quilting over the next few days, but rest assured if I manage to finish it before anticipated, I do have plenty of other projects I could move on to!! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

I look forward to seeing what everyone is up to https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Karamarie 01-15-2021 06:32 AM

After watching videos on my computer about making a t-shirt quilt, I am going to start cutting out the t-shirt emblems. That will be for first grandson's graduation this spring. Nothing like getting a head start.

eparys 01-15-2021 06:32 AM

This looks like a fun thing to do. Thanks Heather! I do have to admit, I have lurked many times in the background checking out what you all are doing. This weekend I have two quilt bindings as well as a parcel of 4" Civil War reproductions blocks. I belong to a FB group hosted by author Kathleen Tracy and we are doing a sew along for her School Girl Sampler quilt. So instead of lurking I am going to join you!!

luvstoquilt 01-15-2021 06:40 AM

The border of my quilt is flying geese and I will be making them. If I finish, I will do a small mini quilt.

I will be doing the border o n “Wild Goose Chase”

Cheesehead 01-15-2021 06:52 AM

I'm working on a valentine wall hanging and hope to have it finished this weekend.

When I first started quilting, every time I found fabric I liked I used to buy one yard to make a stash. I now have too much focus fabric and plan to turn those yard cuts into placemats. Placemats will be on my list for this weekend and many more VQW's to come.

SusieQOH 01-15-2021 07:27 AM

Hi everyone! I just did an 8 day cleanup of my sewing room so I'm pumped!
I have a bag full of projects and I may tackle one or two. They're small. OR I may start On Ringo Lake. I bought the pattern last night.
I may have to post pics of my room. It was quite an experience but I love the results.

juliasb 01-15-2021 07:34 AM

I have one small project that I believe I will be able to finish. I am gonna give it a healthy try. Getting it backed and quilted is the goal.

Cam's gram 01-15-2021 07:51 AM

I'm in! Hopefully life doesn't get in the way too much. Going to see the newest member of our family this afternoon, our great grandson #2. I started his quilt this morning. Nothing like proscratinating!

Railroadersbrat 01-15-2021 08:10 AM

Raggiemom - my fiance goes out and collects rocks from inside and around the woods, streams, lakes, mountains near us and a rock tumbler will smooth those rocks out and polish them to a shine. He's been wanting a tumbler since we got together but it never was in the cards, so got him one now. A three pound load of rocks will take about six weeks to tumble, give or take, so the tumbler is on 24/7

Cam's gram 01-15-2021 08:38 AM

The quilt I am making is for DGGS#2 - that's where the procrastination comes in! At first his nursery was going to be whales but DGD changed to sloths. I couldn't think of anything with sloths so I thought I would make any quilt I wanted to, Well, walked into an LQS that I don't go to often and found a quilt kit that is sloths! Did not know they were so popular.

thimblebug6000 01-15-2021 09:13 AM

Great to read what everyone is planning! I started making scrappy snowball blocks to use as an alternate block for the Bonnie Hunter leaders/enders I made. Nothing exciting but it keeps my mind occupied https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png and my hands busy!

donac 01-15-2021 09:17 AM

I am hoping to finish the hand quilting on my Christmas quilt. There is a problem with one of the borders but after talking to my husband about it I think we came up with a solution. I am hoping by next week to start the binding on it.

Cheshirepat 01-15-2021 09:44 AM

I'm torn! I really just want to plant myself in the sewing room and either baste the edge and trim/bind the stupid Christmas quilt that is unfinished, or piece the backing for my sister's quilt, or even try a new-to-me hand stitching project I saw for small scraps (which really is just playing with color, my favorite thing). But, I also really want to get some plants put in before it's hot again here, I want to get wire for the vintage sewing machine that needs rewiring, etc....https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/confused.png

sewbizgirl 01-15-2021 11:39 AM

Cam's gram, sloths are trending right now. They are everywhere!

I just picked up a tub of 9 lap quilts that need binding put on. These were quilted by a friend in my quilting group who is battling Multiple Myeloma. The chemo was so strong she can no longer feel or use her fingers well. She has a big longarm she loves using, but can't do the bindings, so I offered to put bindings on her quilts. These are charity quilts for children., mostly panels. So I will probably be machine sewing binding on this VQW, and being thankful for the feeling and dexterity I still have in my hands.

rryder 01-15-2021 12:48 PM

Yay! I love VQWs. I’ve been working on the January color block quilt from Debbie Brown’s quilt along. Got everything cut out except a few pieces for sashing and borders. My scrap drawers were overflowing, so this one will be made completely from scraps except for the two long borders and the backing which will come from yardage- still, it’ll all be from stash. I am also still finishing up the painting on the Helen Godden Magic Mushrooms quilt which I'd like to get finished by the end of the month.

looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

Rob

I am doing the quilting on a wallhanging and I finished (or thought I had finished) but when I look at it, I think it needs all of the background quilted in a fill.....So, that may be what I'm doing. I also have a piano cover that has over a hundred leaves that all need to be blanket-stitched.
So, I'm sure I'll find something to do this weekend!

Yes! VQW. Just found this at 4PM. This AM finished the center for round robin, took pictures and mailed it and scraps. Cousin was here, yesterday and today. Yesterday he cleaned up computer files and disabled some files that were always on but never used. Works a smidgen better. Then he worked on downloading photos. So this AM, we worked together on getting photos to computer and organizing files. Still need to upload photos to QB, and now I feel it's doable. So much better. (I did some sewing things for him,) Getting to my Bernina gave me a new insight into UFO's hanging around, taking up space and making it tough to get to machine so I can use it. Time to quilt and get them out of here.

Raggiemom 01-15-2021 04:43 PM

Panchita—good luck quilting. My only advice is to keep your movements and stitching steady

eparys—glad you’re joining us

railroadersbrat—that sounds cool!

I finished 13 blocks for one of my mystery quilts today. So that is all caught up!

Hope you settled on something! You could put them on slips of paper and then pull one out of a hat to give you a nudge! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Thank you for the grace. I packed up all the blocks and put them away. What I would really like is to bring them to my aunt's house (she's been quilting for 30+ years) but with Covid she's really been locked down and I'm going to respect that.

We did spend 1.5 hours on the phone yesterday and she talked me thru machine applique. I'm not confident yet but at least I have a map now.

Conchalea 01-15-2021 07:16 PM

I spent the day sewing at my friend's house. I'm trying to finish the Ripple JR quilt. As of today, 3 rows are sewn together with all blocks for rows 4& 5 finished. Rows 6 & 7 only need 1 strip of sashing with corner stone and then all those last rows can be sewn together. K, my friend, & I work well together. I cut the strips, place them in the right location on each block, & she sews them on. She also chooses the cornerstone & sews them to strips. I sew on that part, & the blocks come together quickly. We should finish the top & get the quilt sandwiched tomorrow. I'll quilt it & K will probably bind it. I think we can have it.completed by the time I leave for my daughter's late next week.

I'm in! Spent all afternoon yesterday cleaning the basement rec room where long arm is--boy, does quilting produce a ton of lint and threads! Today I got a friend's quilt that her cousins great grandmother started, grandma helped and now it's her's. So the friend finished it up for her and I'm quilting. It has some amazing feedsack fabrics in 8 pt stars. All loaded on the long arm and ready to do tomorrow. I spent the afternoon doing the last week of my improv blocks for our quilt guild challenge of a temp quilt. besides quilting on the friend's quilt I also need to hem a pair of pants for DH--a task I'd rather put off!

sewbizgirl 01-15-2021 08:19 PM

I managed to get 2 of the 9 quilts I have, bound. The lady who made them also cut the binding for me and sent it along, so that was a big help. Only 7 to go!

I also just joined the birthday swap, and got many squares cut today. I’ll have more time for sewing tomorrow.

This is a test to see if I can upload a photo of my Red Truck tree skirt from my new phone (it apparently needs to be resized in a different way than I used previously...)

Panchita 01-16-2021 01:58 AM

OK, well that's a bit dinkier than I wanted, but at least the photo is up (I'll play around with percentage-resizing later to try and get any further photos a bit larger when clicked on)

If you can see it, the diagonal white strip across the centre is actually my quilter's tape guideline to start quilting, not flawed piecing... I'm going in!!

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

rryder 01-16-2021 03:17 AM

That’s a cute tree skirt, Panchita! Congratulations on getting the pic to upload. I recently updated the operating system on my computer and spent a couple of days trying to figure out how to resize pics. Turns out it uses the same program to resize, but the link is in a different place- sheesh!
