Virtual Quilting Weekend -- January 13-16, 2017

Welcome to Virtual Quilting Weekend (started a little late!). For some reason, I was thinking Martin Luther King Day was NEXT week, not this week. So please join us over the next few days as we quilt "together". Are you working on next year's Christmas presents (or maybe last year's still :) ), started something new for yourself, on a UFO, or just organizing your room? Whatever you're doing, we would love to hear about it. And don't forget to share photos if you can, we all love to get new ideas.

I have some WIPS I hope to make progress on and a couple quilts to quilt and bind. So will check back in with you later :)

I am in. And then off to a retreat so I can continue on. Yippee

retiredteacher09 01-13-2017 05:43 AM

Thanks for hosting again, Raggiemom!

I look forward to these weekends and I enjoy reading and seeing everyone's projects.

My goals for this weekend:

1. Finish 40 quarter square triangles-Bonnie Hunter Mystery

2. Finish my 'sewing room' map

3. Get a backing ready and sandwich a quilt

4. Fringe and tie 2 fleece blankets

NZquilter 01-13-2017 06:26 AM

I'm in! I have only two more blocks for the Bonnie Hunter MQ and then the borders left to piece. I hope to finish that this weekend. I look forward to seeing everyone else's projects!

Watson 01-13-2017 06:41 AM

I am beginning a wall hanging for my living room, which we just re-did in grey and yellow. My husband saw a pattern on the screen when I was searching through Google and said "That one!", so that "That one!" it is! It's very modern, but I'll give it a go.
And, I hope to get my stash tidied up. After concentrating on one big project for so long, it's just a wreck.

I'm in. I simply MUST finish this chemo quilt that I want to give my friend. I messed up the backing at one edge. Maybe I'll post pics to see what you all determine would fix it nicely.

That would thrill me.

I'm playing nurse to my teenage son who just had a very complicated appendectomy. His was the worst case the surgeon had ever seen in his 20 years. Why? Because the appendix "looked like someone had superglued the whole thing to the colon". Surgeon had to meticulously scrape at it. He called in a colleague to assess whether to take some of the colon in order to get the entire appendix, or to leave the colon alone but only get the worst of the inflamed appendix out. He decided on the latter. After 3 hours (normal operation like this takes only 1 hour) , my son has 2/3 of his appendix left inside, a lot of soreness, and the possibility of facing another surgery in two months. He is getting around okay, but gingerly, has a ton of homework to make up (he missed the entire week) and so I might not get as much sewing in as I hope. We'll see.

Macybaby 01-13-2017 07:44 AM

I'll probably be in and out. I was hoping this would be next weekend when I'll have more free time!

I've committed to going through my sewing machine collection and selecting machines to de-access (sounds better than selling LOL!). I'll be renting a small space in a friend's antique mall, and putting them there. DH is making me a display so I can put one or two cabinets, and 6 machines. Then as they go, I'll replace them until I'm down to where I want to be.

Once I'm off work at noon today, I plan on going out and putting another quilt on the LA - I'm so backlogged with floppies, I want to try to get done one a week until I'm caught up. Would work better if I'd stop making more floppies though - as I just completed a stained glass floppy this AM.

Karamarie 01-13-2017 07:56 AM

I am also working on my Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt. My blocks are done, now adding the border pieces. Have been under the weather this week and feeling better now so should get something done. We are in the good old Minnesota winter weather so a good time to be inside. Happy sewing everyone.

Cam's gram 01-13-2017 07:58 AM

I'm in! Long story, ran the situation by my DH, BF and DDIL and they all agreed I have to make a baby quilt for a shower that is next weekend. I've started but really want to finish this weekend. First thing I have to do is go buy a new iron - mine started leaking this am. Can't afford any disasters with a time crunch.

Snooze2978 01-13-2017 08:07 AM

Watched Jenny's Cathedral Window video yesterday and decided to try it out. Have all my 5" color squares pulled and now cutting more white 5" squares as I realize I need more than told on the video. Also working on an old, old project from back before 2007. Found it sitting on my project shelf so pulled it out. Made some mistakes cutting out the apron so had to go to Plan B for that. This is a vacumn cleaner cover using a rabbit dressed in a victorian dress/apron. Changed out the dress fabric, regrouped on the apron and now ready to add some embroidery to the bib and front center section of the bottom portion of the apron. Also using up my 2.5" squares I cut for another project. These will become the bottom section of the dress peaking out from the apron. 440 squares to make up 22" x 88" section of the skirt. Using up my scraps so I'm happy.

Anyone going to road2ca, super fun

QuiltingVagabond 01-13-2017 09:52 AM

I'll be sewing this weekend, the weather is supposed to be freezing rain starting tonight, so I don't plan to go out at all.
Lots of little projects, stuffing 2 penquin toys/pillows, sandwiching several small projects, and who knows what else?

Yes! We'll be going on Thursday.

I'm in ............ I do have my niece's quilt that needs to be finished and maybe I can finish the binding on my mini.

rryder 01-13-2017 01:01 PM

I'm in. I want to finish piecing a baby quilt that's nearly complete, then get it sandwiched and quilted. Then it's back to work on a UFO that I had hoped to get finished this month, but had to put aside for the baby quilt. And if there's time I want to de-chaos-ify my sewing space.

Zozee: Sending a prayer for your son. Interesting about the appendix and colon.

Karamarie: I'm glad you are feeling better. We certainly have had a range of temps and precipitation this winter.

I finished my Bonnie Hunter Mystery QST's for clue 7. I even had an extra one and an OOPS! :) 2 yellows instead of a yellow and a neutral. Oh, well.

I also finished a 2 yard fleece blanket. Jasmine is my helper.

Watson 01-13-2017 01:42 PM

Whew! It's taken me most of the day just to get the fabric strips cut and sorted into the colour piles! Now, I still have to cut all the shapes for the applique before I can begin the actual blocks. I'm glad this is a wall hanging and not a queen sized quilt!

Watson - bit off more than she can chew?

Macybaby 01-13-2017 02:49 PM

Watson - it's ok if it's more than you can chew, as long as it's not more than you can sew LOL!!

Of course, I'm teasing - it reminded me of something I tell others. I use to do a lot of baking as a hobby, and had to give it up because I was gaining too much weight. I tell people I switched to quilting because I don't end up eating my mistakes.

quiltingcandy 01-13-2017 03:19 PM

I am in! In fact, right after this post I am going into my sewing room and quilt the Old MacDonald quilt until it is done!!!! It has been hanging over my head since July and I keep working on other project. But that was my family's fault. :-) I had to make 24 owl bookmarks for my DD's 4th grade class for Christmas, my other DD asked me to crochet 5 infinity scarfs, then my DH saw what they were, he asked for 8 for his friends, then I decided to embroider some flour sack towels with Christmas pictures for a couple of friends and family, when my DDs saw them they wanted a set, and 4 more sets for their friends.... In all I made 25 book marks, 16 scarfs, 9 sets of towels, and a couple of towels for our friends in Germany.
The funny part about making so many scarves - I went to Joann's and the check out lady asked me what I was making with all the yarn and I said "Eternity scarfs, you know, the ones where the 2 ends are attached." She gave me a very odd look, but I thought she just hadn't heard of them. Then when I got in the car and realized what I said I started laughing so hard I had to wait do drive. Thought about going back in to tell her I meant "Infinity" not "Eternity". It still makes me giggle - hope she is laughing too.

sewbizgirl 01-13-2017 04:01 PM

Our charity group director sent out an email saying how badly one of our hospitals needed quilts for men... so I got out my plaids and started cutting. I'll be trying to get that one done this weekend, plus whatever else I can get to. I have so many tops to quilt!

Zozee, prayers for your son. I'm sure they don't want to leave the rest of his appendix in there. Hope all works out well for him.

Jasper is a cute kitty. So fuzzy and chilled!

I have a lot of "other stuff" to do besides quilting but I'm going to try to get some done on the king sized bed quilt I'm doing using the quilting in sections method.

For once, I'm IN!! We're in an ice-storm "watch"...the predictions for a "devastating ice storm" have not come to pass, fortunately... a quilty friend had planned to come over to "play" today, but just as she was leaving her house it began to sleet...she pulled back into the garage and we cancelled our play day.... If we'd only known that was IT for the storm, at least so far. More ice is still predicted, but so far, no ice and we still have power! After I prepared food for the expected loss of power, I finally sat down to work on my sweet DIL's long-anticipated quilt. After posting a question regarding that quilt, I decided to stick around the board for a bit... and here I am... The rest of tonight and tomorrow is dedicated to the quilt! May all your bobbins stay full!!!

Kelly_Y 01-13-2017 08:00 PM

I've got my sister's wedding anniversary and a friend's baby due in may, so I'd better make some progress finishing a wedding quilt and starting a baby blanket.

happylab 01-13-2017 08:49 PM

I'm in again this weekend. I will be iced in for a day or so. So here goes my list of my projects to make some progress.
- I plan to complete steps 5 & 6 on BH mystery quilt.
- Then make 4 more log cabin blocks, and put the top together & get ready to take to quilter.
- make a 10" block for the quilting bee for this month.
- clear off my quilting machine and set up my chewie quilt to start quilting.
- do next step on Judy's mystery #16 train ride.

I will start sewing tomorrow AM. I only have 2 days to do the sew along. I'll post picks if my i-pad will let me post them. I've tried to post pics on another site and I'm unable to post them at this time.

mollymunchkin 01-13-2017 09:42 PM

I am in. I just found out my LA is selling the machine that she rents out. I have three queen size quilts to quilt. So, I have to add a border to one of them so I can get them finished. One of my nieces has made a request for a baby quilt and matching layette, since she can't find anything she wants that she can afford. Then, I saved a pillow pattern called "Love Notes" on FB and her sister, who is getting married in May wants one of those. Looks like I have more than enough to keep me busy. And did I mention that I dumped several totes of scraps on the bed to sort them and I really need to clean that up.

quiltingshorttimer 01-13-2017 09:47 PM

I'm in! Also dealing with ice this weekend--which meant that I had to postpone the first beginners class that my Guild does annually (7 weeks for the price of membership!) and a guild sew-in for charitable tote bags for foster kids. Sooo, finished a practice whole cloth that is "dry run" for one that I plan to make for KCRegional Quilt Fest--pictures tomorrow as it's drying from blocking now. And I HAVE to start on another quilt--both the actual whole cloth and the other quilt have to be done by March 1. So count me in!

my "dry run" on a whole cloth (which will be little bigger) -not bound, just dried from being blocked. I'm already seeing some things I will change.

quiltingcandy 01-13-2017 11:31 PM

Well, it is 11 pm and I have completed 5 of 25 blocks quilted. Was starting to reposition the clips when I decided it was time to quit for the night. I really miss those days when I could sew to the wee hours of the night. Now when I do that something terrible happens - either I get the scissors too close when trimming threads or fabric gets twisted under the part I am sewing. Usually I quit around 9:30 or 10 - but tonight I was so close to finishing the row to stop. And there are 2 more days - actually three if I count Monday. :-0

Have to get it done this weekend, my friend is coming from AZ to go to the Road to CA show is next weekend. We plan to go Friday, but if it is really good I may drive up again. My friend is also making an Old Mac Donald quilt and she wants to see my finished quilt to get some inspiration to finish hers.

jmoore 01-14-2017 03:57 AM

Finally, a weekend that I can join in too... first on the list is to add borders to my Allietare from last year's BH mystery (that's why I didn't feel right about doing en Provence this year). I have a nautical quilt up on the design wall with 80 squares so I will try to get the top finished this weekend and I have a baby quilt sandwiched and pinned that I will quilt on my DSM. The two quilts are UFO's so I will be getting those off my 2017 list early. : )

Got the top of the baby quilt done. Made this quilt a while ago and realized I had enough material left for another top except for the border so I ordered that material. Good thing - saved a lot of time to get this shower gift done.

Wrylymax 01-14-2017 05:59 AM

Cam's gran - that's beautiful! I love the pinks. What a lucky little one.

I'm in on the sewing weekend. DH is watching football all weekend so I'll have plenty of time. I'm currently working on a Hunter's Star quilt, piecing HSTs, and have about 25% of them to go. Then join into blocks and finish the quilt top.

I also have a top ready to quilt and hope to finish that as well.

giquilt 01-14-2017 07:02 AM

I'm joining in! Yesterday I put my Pat Sloan 2016 Mystery Garden quilt together. Just lack Borders now. Headed today to a Lucy Boston Club meeting at LQS. (Patchwork of the Crosses). We have a fun program, lots of Show and Tell, chocolate, and sit & sew. Will post pics later today. Tomorrow hope to put my 2016 Guild BOW together. Just need to cut out corner stones. Cam's gram, darling quilt❣

Rebecca_S 01-14-2017 07:26 AM

I'm in! This is the first year my company has given us MLK off work, so I get a long weekend. If I am diligent, I'm going to be able to finish piecing the top I have been working on since December.

sewbizgirl 01-14-2017 10:06 AM

Wow, beautiful quilting, shorttimer! Wish I could do half as well!

Love your pretty baby quilt, Cam's Gram. The top I am piecing is sashed between everything like that, too. It really sets the blocks off.

rryder 01-14-2017 10:32 AM

Nice job on the dry run, Quiltingshortimer! I'm looking forward to seeing the final piece when you get it done.

Cam's gram- very nice baby quilt.

I picked up my PQ1500s from the "spa" this morning and straightened up the mess in my sewing area. Biiiiiig job, so now I'm resting up. Later today I will finish piecing the baby quilt top and get it sandwiched so I can quilt it tomorrow.
Then, if I have time I'll work on doing some dimensional sewing with velvet-- that will be pieces to insert into an art quilt UFO that I really want to get finished.

Great idea for a gray dreary long weekend. My project is a "rabbit" rag quilt. My pattern is a modification of the Simplicity bear/cat/dog classic. My granddaughter thinks my rabbit pattern has too big of a belly, but I want a happy rabbit. My stash needs a few more diverse blue flannel fabrics then I can start cutting and sewing. Lets post photos of our weekend's progress.Wed

AUQuilter 01-14-2017 11:33 AM

I am in. Working on backing/batting for four quilts- two for me and two for charity. Started cutting Bonnie Hunter's 2015 Mystery Quilt- Alletiare- using Studio cutter dies when possible. It has been in a bin by my sewing table long enough and has been calling out to be started. Will post on Monday the progress made on these.

I got my men's charity quilt all pieced. It came out 50"x62"... good sized throw quilt. I am planning to quilt it simply, maybe just vertical squiggly lines, because it's needed before Wednesday. The pattern I used was this one:

http://www.makoweruk.com/test/wp-con...structions.pdf

Only as you can see, I used my stash of shirt fabrics and navy sashing.
