Virtual quilting weekend January 13-16, 2023

Good afternoon all! Sorry I’m a little late getting VQW started. The morning flew right by. What are you quilting plans for the weekend? I am prepping a couple bags by Annie. In fact I have a class for Take a Stand Sunday. Then I’m still cleaning and organizing.

next VQW is February 17-20.

WMUTeach 01-13-2023 10:12 AM

I am in again. Going to be cutting my 2.5" squares for the Birthday swap. Then I have several sew-a-longs to keep up with and of course UFO. Let's just say I have choices this weekend. ;)

Cam's gram 01-13-2023 10:27 AM

I’m in. I up graded my long arm and to Pro Stitcher Premium in December and finally have time to try it out. Was using a very old version of Pro Stitcher. Had a virtual class Tuesday night so I think I’m ready. Have a huge (118 x 107) quilt to load and work on for DS#2 & DDIL. It’s a cheater quilt. The top is backing from the Soar fabric line. Thought it was beautiful and decided to try it as a quilt top.

Julienm1 01-13-2023 10:33 AM

I'm in! Just gtot back from Project Linus where I donated 6 quilts...Good for me...Good for them. Working on another skateboard quilt for big kids. Almost done piecing then I can glue baste sandwhich and quilt. Not sure which project a I'll start next. WAY to many to choose from.

petthefabric 01-13-2023 10:33 AM

Been straightening. Feels finished. Have lunch then sew.

tallchick 01-13-2023 10:40 AM

Thanks for hosting again Heather! I’m in; need to finish the blocks for the border of the same quilt I was working on during the New Year’s VQW. Since I got all my year end paperwork completed, books closed and W2’s mailed, I am ready to get back to quilting! Looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

cjsews 01-13-2023 11:44 AM

I am in. Joining a new quilt guild tomorrow. That should be fun. I have a bunch of 2.5” strips trimmed from leftovers. I am using these to make a scrap quilt. Not sure how it will turn out yet. Then I want to use more scrap fabrics to make a chandelier quilt.

rryder 01-13-2023 12:55 PM

I'm in! I'll be at a gallery opening where my quilts are being shown tonight, but tomorrow I plan on working on my Sunflower Illusions quilt. I'm in the process of stitching the curved parts together and it's slow going- definitely trying my patience. I also have a quilt that needs some more quilting added, and another one that's sandwiched and ready to be quilted once I decide what I want to do on it.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone's working on.

I just started the Riley Blake 2023 Block challenge, finished the first block this morning and have the second one cut and waiting to piece this weekend.

happylab 01-13-2023 01:34 PM

Thank-you for hosting Heather.

my weekend goals to (1) quilt a baby top for a friend. (2) finish parts 1-4 on BHMQ. (3) finish putting the r/w/blk top together. (4) attend a basic PPing class.

Railroadersbrat 01-13-2023 02:08 PM

Hey everyone! Yes, I am in!

Taking part in Karen Brown's Declutter Challenge, we're on day 12 of 21 - so we're on the downhill side. Today, it's notions and other crafts, been waiting for this day as I have three drawers full of bulk items that are taking up valuable real estate and I need a better place to store my fabrics.

I'll be sewing this weekend for certain; I have an idea for a wall hanging organizer for my desk that I'll be working on and at some point, work on my sister's quilt.

Thanks for hosting, Heather!!

rjwilder 01-13-2023 03:25 PM

I’m in now that I know what it is. I’m going to make the Project Bag by Annie. Not quilting but it will be a challenge for me using vinyl and I’ll have something to put my project in for sewing with friends.

petthefabric 01-13-2023 03:55 PM

Goals:
Finish piecing the one on design wall. Forgot name. The rows are done, not sew them together and bet back ready.
BHMQ top complete and. Back ready.
4 hours of quilting something
Make dinner for 2 families at church
make bread.

Dedemac 01-13-2023 05:11 PM

Thanks, Heather I'm in for most of the weekend. Tomorrow we have a family get together in the afternoon. But want to work on 3 ufo's and do some more cleaning in the sewing room.

Rob, would love to see pictures and Congratulations on the gallery showing.

Sync 01-13-2023 07:25 PM

Rob, congratulations on having your quilts shown at a gallery. Would love to see some pictures of that.

Sync 01-13-2023 07:30 PM

Heather, thanks for hosting another VQW. My plans for this long weekend are to finish putting the borders on my EPP stars quilt and hopefully getting a Cotton Cuts mystery into a top and ready to quilt.

tallchick 01-14-2023 03:30 AM

I am almost there! I have just 32 more 2.5 x 1.5 Flying Geese to make. My hats off to those that like small pieces! I, am not one of them!

QuiltMom2 01-14-2023 04:53 AM

As soon as I get my machine together, I'm off to a Saturday morning sew-in at church. I've got the blocks for one child quilt and a big scrap project ready to assemble.

stitch678 01-14-2023 06:04 AM

My first virtual weekend quilting 🙂. I have baskets of scraps ready to sort/ cut into 2 or 3 different scrap quilt patterns. Hoping when they're " ready to sew", l may actually work on taming "mount scrapmore".

Rff1010 01-14-2023 06:38 AM

I bought a long arm - so this weekend is trying to sell the dining room set and finding furniture for the new craft room ....and writing a midterm exam (day job!). Probably not much sewing. Am going to Project Linus today with some donations of the blanket and fabric kind. Not 100% following the Declutter Challenge, but absorbing the spirit. However I will follow everyone's projects here with great enthusiasm. Post! I'm looking forward to your progress!

It feels good to sort and cut scraps, but the best way to get them out of your space is to sew them up into a quilt top. Even a small throw or a baby quilt will make an encouraging visual of your smaller version of "mount scrapmore". Ask me how I know! :)

I am cutting my fabric, small yardage and scraps for the Birthday Swap and about half done this morning. While doing a bit of a clean up yesterday, I found a small bin of temperature quilt squares that I fizzled out on about 5 years back. Wa-la! Inspiration in hand. They were already cut into 2.5" squares. Whoopy! The pieces of an unfinished project being repurposed!

Cam's gram 01-14-2023 07:04 AM

Rob, congratulations on the gallery showing of your quilts. Love your work - pictures please! Got the quilt loaded, pattern created and a little quilting done. It is a steep learning curve. Used the handout from the class and my computer. Definitely will have questions for our next class.

thimblebug6000 01-14-2023 08:36 AM

Congratulations Rob! I have three blocks for January for the guild to make and then, going to start another BOM (from My Carolina home blog) that runs until July, so need to iron the scraps and cut into pieces. I have spent hours removing quilt photos from pages in a binder with descriptions on them…I had 3 binders and they were too large to stand on shelf, so took up too much room! I am putting into smaller albums, with shorter descriptions on them, it is a mess on the dining room table, so really hope I can just “get it done” …I have been putting the timer on for 1/2 hour intervals 🤪

petthefabric 01-14-2023 08:59 AM

Like “1/2 hour intervals”. Most anything is possible for 1/2 hour intervals.

Rob, love to see which quilts are in the show. However, also remember how Watson’s quilt picture was stollen from QB and sold online. Is there another way? Maybe PM?

Lots or scrap mgmt happening. Daily, walking past a x-lg tote that needs mgmt. but I know there’s a lot of decisions in there. It’s the box of “I don’t know what to do with that, tote for now.” And now hasn’t happened yet. More urgent is the top of my desk.

almost forgot, pieces are together and pix poster under ‘pictures’. Next it’ll be pressed and trimmed. Goal 1 much progress.

hi everyone. Thank you Heather for hosting VQW. As always, look forward to seeing what everyone is working on. I've been commissioned to restore this quilt. I have permission from the owner to disassemble, repair, and put it back together. I also have permission to use new fabric to repair the shredded pieces. I have it disassembled, I am using civil war replica fabric to fill in the shredded pieces. I finished piecing those in this morning. This afternoon I am interfacing each block in prep to applique my repair pi ces, and then to quilt each block before I start the reassembly of the quilt. I have a timeline of spring before the owner wants it back.
This quilt is over 150 years old. It is clothing pieces that the woman hand sewed into the scrappy blocks. Each block is backed. The backing is linen. I'm pretty sure the batting is horse hair.

lindaschipper 01-14-2023 12:15 PM

I'm bouncing back and forth between the sewing machine making blocks for a block quilt to be donated to Project Linus, and doing some cross stitch. I'm antsy today. Blocks are pressed and only one additional piece needs to be added to each block before I can sew them all together. Making the backing will be easy. Oh shoot...forgot about the binding!! Guess I'm off to the sewing roomm again!

Not much sewing done today due to some unsewing, then resewing units for my Cotton Cuts mystery top. But I did manage to get the center section done. Hopefully, this evening I'll get to putting on the borders for my EPP stars.

Raggiemom 01-14-2023 05:54 PM

Railroadersbrat—good luck decluttering. That’s what I’ve been working on in my sewing room too. It’s a long process! At least for me anyway.

rjwilder—the project bag by Annie is a fun project. Sewing on vinyl isn’t too bad. I put a piece of paper under the vinyl to help it slide on my table more easily. Watch out tho—you’ll find yourself making all kinds of Annie’s projects.

stitch678–welcome!

Well I finished my catch all caddy by Annie. I’m not happy with the binding. I’ve tried three different machines and none of them want to cooperate that well. Will probably end up ripping part of it back out and redoing. I’m all set for tomorrow’s class I think. I sorted out a few things today and cut for three charity quilts.

Will check back in tomorrow night when I get back from class.

thimblebug6000 01-14-2023 06:39 PM

Yay! The binders are completed! And I have two/three blocks stitched…AND I forgot it was the guild zoom meeting today from 10-12 so I sat and hand quilted. Also a huge plus the sun came out today, still cool but we managed more than an hours walk about, this is my saving grace! Waiting on the veggies to finish for our dinner, I am so thankful that I am able to do all the things needed to keep our little home smoothly flowing…DH is now enjoying some TV time.

I finished up the 3rd attempt to use a cross stitch pattern for a quilt! Well, the center at least. I will move on to another project while I marinate on the borders. Plus, these squares are 1.25" and I have used up my patience. Today, I'm moving on to the dining table cover that I've been collecting fabric to create. Later, I will try the top layer on the dining table for fitting.

QuiltMom2 01-15-2023 04:52 AM

Reporting that small child's doggy quilt is all pieced together, but found out I'm 2 blocks short for the big scrappy project. So my plan today is to piece two more scrap blocks using a lot of already pieced HST's.

I think Quiltah Mama is a candidate for sainthood if she's restoring and re-quilting that 150 year old crazy pieced quilt! Just had to say it...

Karamarie 01-15-2023 06:38 AM

I will be working on my large quilt for my queen size bed. I want to make it so it totally covers the mattress and box spring so it will be large. I don't really want it for warmth but for a bedspread. It uses lots of 2 1/2" squares which I have a lot of. For me it is relaxing to just sew squares together and not an intricate pattern. I have found through the years when I make a very intricate pattern on a quilt, I am hesitant to use it, but a scrappy like I am making now will be used every day. I will FMQ it myself and put a thin polyester batting in it; therefore, cutting down on the weight of it. I am at the point where I am sewing the rows together and that is what I am working on now for VQW.

donac 01-15-2023 08:37 AM

I am actually quilting this weekend. Making grandkids sleep mats with blankets attached for preschool. They are just starting full time this week. Got one almost done and getting ready to start the second one. Had husband help me pick out fabrics the other day.

rryder 01-15-2023 08:44 AM

Thanks everyone. DH usually takes photos at my openings, but it was too crowded on Friday night, so no photos. We will get some this week and post them here. Now, back to quilting.

Not much done yesterday, was able to do a small amount of cleaning before we went to the family gathering. Stayed longer than expected but had a blast. Unfortunately I was sitting on a folding chair most of the day so didn't get enough moment in the back and shoulders so they were very uncomfortable when we got home and when I got up today. Did church on line while sewing HST, right now taking a break for a little nosh. Decided for some instant gratification today, sewed some of the blocks into rows then made more sub pieces for the blocks. I have two of the five rows fully sewn and only need 6 more blocks of the one pattern then I can sew the other 3 rows. I feel like I'm making good progress. DH is in the basement playing guitar so it's a very enjoyable day.

Aashley333 - that is a very ambushes project.

Quiltah Mama 01-15-2023 12:32 PM

Ashley333, love the colors on your cross stitch turned quilt pattern. Absolutely stunning. I have done two cross stitch patterns in to quilts. I did 11/2" pieces. I am in awe of your 11/4" pieces 😱.

Raggiemom 01-15-2023 02:15 PM

Sounds like Sunday is going well for many of you. The Take a Stand class was fun and I finished my bag. After making a huge mistake and sewing the carrying straps on upside down. Naturally I didn't realize that until I had attached the mesh pockets on the inside. So I had to rip out the straps and then part of the mesh pockets. Hopefully I don't ever make that mistake again!

Headed upstairs to relax for the rest of the night. Tomorrow is a fun quilting day at the quilt shop with friends.

Railroadersbrat 01-15-2023 04:37 PM

Raggiemom - that is no joke. I'm making fairly decent progress, but when we hit the notions and other crafts two days ago, my sewing corner blew up and I think I may have to backtrack some in order to gain any noticeable progress. Supposed to identify unfinished projects/objects and decide if we're actually going to finish them for today's task, I only have a couple and yes, they're getting completed so I'll have the rest of my time to finish dealing with my mess. It's fun to declutter, but when you hit a bump like this, sometimes it takes the wind out of your sails a little. The challenge this year seemed to hit me mentally more than emotionally or even physically.

I'm designing a wall hanging that I can put above my desk for all of my pens, pencils and odds and ends. I'm using a sewing caddy to hold all of that, but it's taking up space on my desk and I think that's where my 'rub the wrong way' feeling is coming when I sit down. I'm adding a couple of mess pockets below that will hold all my glasses, the rest of it will be done with baskets in varying shapes. I know I'm onto something, just have to map it out, make the baskets, do some FMQ or grid it and call it good.

petthefabric 01-15-2023 04:54 PM

Thimble, I’m impressed with your finishing that project so quickly.
