Virtual Quilting Weekend--July 2-5, 2021

Welcome to the July VQW. I'll start the thread and try to check in over the weekend, my mom is visiting for the first time in two years. So I won't be doing too much quilting this weekend! Next VQW is August 6-8, 2021.

rryder 07-01-2021 12:43 PM

Yay!!! I'm in. I've got the Debbie Brown June quilt all sandwiched and ready for quilting, and scraps pulled from stash to start piecing the Debbie Brown July quilt. If there's time, I've also got a small whole cloth quilt sandwiched, but still need to do some design work on it before I start quilting, and also have a class project from an Iquilt design class that I just finished watching.

Can't wait to see what everyone is working on. Thanks for hosting, Heather.

Thanks for hosting again Heather, enjoy your time with your Mom! I just finished the last block for my neighbors quilt this afternoon. I managed to get one row sewn and I hope to get the entire quilt assembled tomorrow and if I am lucky, perhaps loaded on the longarm. If the quilting gods are with me then I might even manage to get it quilted as well beofre the long weekend is over.
I am looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

Iceblossom 07-01-2021 02:03 PM

I always enjoy these weekends. The heat wave in Seattle broke and things are bearable so I'm back in my sewing room. I'm working on a project for my Hubby's aunt who is a University of Michigan sports fan. I think I've gotten a pretty good design for a sports themed quilt for a grown woman. My hubby insisted on a lot of specific themed UM fabric. I have 25 star blocks to finish and that is my goal for the weekend, if I get past that I have a bunch of fan blades to cut for 29?? fan blocks. I have a nice acrylic template and it goes fast once I get strips cut but I haven't gotten them cut yet.

It's funny how 25 blocks doesn't sound that bad, and then you start counting up, well that is 100 goose units and then there are corner squares and suddenly you realize you didn't actually buy enough of that special fabric and have to order it again... think I finally have everything I need.

Railroadersbrat 07-01-2021 05:25 PM

I'm currently sitting in bed recovering from a migraine but I am absolutely in this weekend. Fiance will be gone for most of it, so it'll just be me and the dogs.

Will be finishing my nephew's quilt top, then I'll start in on my big sister's. Love these weekends, thanks Heather! You're the hostess with the mostest!

happylab 07-01-2021 05:49 PM

I’m in this weekend. Happy 4th of July weekend everyone.

My projects this weekend. (1) trim & Machine bind a queen size quilt. (2). quilt 4 baby quilts on my long arm. (3). Get fabric together and Start a 4th of July mystery (4) hopefully finish a quilt top for my niece, which is 1/2 done. And in between (5). work on organizing my seeing room (an on going project, LOL).

Watson 07-01-2021 08:38 PM

I'm in.

I was doing a Jelly Roll Race to use as a backing for my Radio Way quilt, but there isn't going to be enough so I will have to go out and buy more fabric. Can't figure out why there isn't enough...that old "math thing" bit me in the butt again!

I will try to work on my long arm this weekend...I am having trouble getting motivated on this one as I put too much ruler work into the pattern I chose and am not enjoying the process, but if I want to get another quilt on the frame, I need to finish this one so.....

Looking forward to pictures of what everyone is working on.

wish i could be quilting. surgeries are getting the way.

Railroadersbrat 07-01-2021 11:01 PM

Well, I seemed to have bounced back from this migraine pretty strong. It's a quarter of one in the morning, finishing up cleaning my kitchen so I can get my fiberglass boards out and line out everything on my island, then I'll be off to the races later. Fiancé will be leaving later this morning, I've got him doing some small projects for me before he leaves that'll make my weekend nice and smooth, lol.

So for my nephew's quilt, I have about a dozen more blocks to put the corners on, then trim them down because my quarter inch seam hasn't been that consistent with this quilt (I am getting better, it's taking some time, though), then lay them out and stitch them up. I'm hoping that won't take more than a day to do. It'll make his quilt a little smaller than expected, but I texted him pics of the blocks this week and he adores it and can't wait to get it, so I'm happy. Depending on how things go, I might just make up some of what I lost in the borders.

Then it'll be onto my big sister's quilt. I'm doing the Flower Chain quilt from MSQC, but I'm doing it in fall colors with muslin background and black accent fabric. I'm super excited about hers, it took me forever to figure out what I wanted to do and her pattern changed 87 times it seems like before I finally settled on the Flower Chain.

Also have more fabric coming in today for two more quilts, one for my sister-in-law and finally one for us. So lots happening here this weekend - I'll have pics the next time I post, my sewing table is a little bit disorganized, lol.

WMUTeach 07-02-2021 04:34 AM

OK, really going to get some things done and out of the way. I have a small break in work tasks, so here I go.
1. Finish binding on Debby Brown Quilt - Think it was February or March?
2. Quilt UFO sandwiched quilt for donation -
3. Make binding for Quilt in #2 and get it on the quilt and finished.
4. Sew up 11 Christmas stockings for VA and cut another 12 for future mindless sewing moments. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hunf.png

That is enough to clear a little space in the sewing room allowing other projects to begin.

Thank you for hosting and giving us a week-end focus. Appreciate the motivation and what fun to watch as projects photos begin arriving.

ka9sdn 07-02-2021 05:58 AM

I will try to do some quilting but main goal is to put elastic into most of my shorts and slacks as I have lost about 60 lbs. and they all want to fall off me! Glad to be smaller but don't want to buy all new clothes so will put sewing skills to work. Hope to cut out a quilt!

Wow! Good for you on losing that much weight!

thimblebug6000 07-02-2021 07:13 AM

I have been working on my Spinning Spools quilt top that Alex Anderson shared, and need to piece a backing and hopefully sandwich it this weekend.

Iceblossom 07-02-2021 07:37 AM

Good going ka9sdn -- my hubby did not fully appreciate my thrift store shopping until he started losing a lot of weight and had to keep buying new pants. One day he found a pair of brand new jeans with the store tags still on them, the exact size he wanted, and he's been hooked and thrifting with me ever since!

These star blocks. Again, I seem to be having an abnormal amount of effort in counting correctly. 25 blocks -- check. That means four sides which adds up to 100 goose units -- check. Apparently this is where I start losing it because 100 goose units = 200 triangles and not 25 or 50 or 100...

I have two opposing sides on the centers. I have one more set of 25 ready to sew, and I will need to cut one more set of yellow triangles which is 50 and not 25! I believe I cut out all the blue corners needed. If not I still have fabric (since it was reordered already) extra.

It should be smooth sailing after this coffee break, and maybe even a progress picture tomorrow.

Iceblossom 07-02-2021 08:23 AM

True Confessions: After the last post I got up and filled with determination and math on my side, cut out those triangles. And then I'm looking and what I have left of my strip and wondering why was there still so much left??

Derp! Counted to 25 again! I think I should play it as a lottery number or something at this point.

Anyway, figured another cup of coffee couldn't hurt so here I am again. But this time, yes -- 50 yellow triangles later. The other set has been sewn and pressed, needs the second yellow triangles put on.

QuiltingVagabond 07-02-2021 10:06 AM

I'm hoping to sew this weekend and packing projects for a retreat next week. Today I started an applique block for my Harriet's Journey top. I'm fairly new to applique and this block will be a challenge as there are 8 hearts, 20 leaves and a circle vine all on a 6 1/2" square!
I also have 3 vet quilts sandwiched waiting to be quilted and 3 fleece panels I have an idea for making into small cuddle throws, so no shortage of things to work on. But the rest of today is busy (not sewing), so I have to wait til tomorrow to continue.

Panchita 07-02-2021 11:26 AM

I'm in this weekend (thank you for hosting Heather, enjoy your time visiting :-))

I'm working on Sylvia's Bridal Sampler blocks, and also a basket of flowers pattern that I intend to turn into a large cushion cover (for a 'throw pillow' I believe is the US lingo)

SBS is a question of trying to get some blocks done: I have 2 applique blocks and a (should be) straightforward machine piecing blocks tagged to attempt next.

The cushion cover is pieced, so next steps are sandwiching and quilting - I'm flirting with the idea of doing some handquilting, but I need to decide on pattern(s)

Happy Quilting!

Raggiemom 07-02-2021 02:20 PM

Just checking in quickly--railroader, glad your migraine is better.

Ice blossom--have fun with the neverending triangles!

I haven't quilted but cut out a couple projects and trimmed some HSTs. Mom is making some shorts so I've been keeping her company :)

Irishrose2 07-02-2021 06:01 PM

I'm in - I have a baby quilt on one machine being FMQ and a wedding quilt on my piecing machine - a long way to go on that one, but I love the ombre fabric, so it's fun to work on.
Finished and delivered the auction quilt I worked on last month, plus delivered the graduation quilt that was on the other machine. All good.

Friday Update

Well, I have to put my fiancé on another project when he gets home. Good thing he loves me so much, lol. My fiberglass board "table" isn't big enough for my nephew's quilt, the picture is only seven blocks across and about six blocks down. There's still two more rows to put on the bottom.

I had some issues getting the last bunch of blocks to square up, but after putting the blocks together, I'm not going to fiddle with them anymore, I think the design hides the problems. I am super, super pleased with how it's coming along, I've texted him pictures of it but haven't heard back from him yet. Given how excited he was when he saw it in the beginning, I think he's going to like what he sees a lot, he's a big blue fan like me.

Next picture is my next project, my big sister's Flower Chain quilt. After I get my nephew's blocks stitched together, I'm going to take a coffee break, then get started on hers.

Feeling super productive, I love these weekends!

Just wanted to pop in and say have a nice weekend. Hope to get some sewing done later. I'm going to a
small quilt show today with a friend.

My weekend accomplishment is to figure out what my next project will be!https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

kyquiltlover1942 07-03-2021 05:57 AM

I am finishing (I hope) my Sewing Room essentials by Elinor Burns. Just have to join the blocks which are all bound and figure our how I want to do the hanger.

Iceblossom 07-03-2021 06:18 AM

Well I indeed got all those yellow triangles cut yesterday. Proud to report that I did indeed have enough of the corner squares, Pieces have been turned into sides which are being sewn now.

Looks like I'll make my goal with plenty of weekend to spare. Hope to get those fan blades cut, it's not as hot but it is more muggy this week and not so pleasant to work in the afternoon. We don't really have any plans for the weekend but something might come up to take me away from my sewing...

I'm in! The first project for this weekend was to finish blocks I am making for a swap. They are done!
I am now getting ready to put the binding on another quilt. I have the binding cut out and ready to get sewn onto the quilt. I hope to have the whole thing done by the end of this weekend. Now back to the quilt.

Working on my first ever Lone Star. Center medallion came out much smaller than anticipated (39"). So I decided to make some extras to go around the outside. This is the test fit.

Sadly I have plenty of the different grey's left. But only 12" of the green background. Fabric is from stash so can't get anymore.

I've never done a medallion before so this problem is really bending my brain. It's a puzzle!

Everyone's projects look terrific! Rff1010, your Lone Star is looking awesome, I think those additions really makes that stand out a lot. I have one on my bucket list!

I, unfortunately, had a setback with my nephew's quilt last night, so instead of getting even more frustrated, I got something to eat, played with my pups outside since it's actually seasonal instead of the blast furnace we were in last week, then decided to start in on my sister's quilt. I've got 12 of 28 of the Irish Change done.

My plan tonight is actually to take it easy a little, I'm having some residual stomach problems from the migraine I had. I'll be working on my sister's quilt, then I'll rip out some seams from my nephew's quilt and work on that some more. I'll post more pics of his quilt later once I do the ripping and re-sewing.

I think I'm going to sew in silence for a while, I've got a pair of tree frogs that are serenading each other right outside my window. Nothing like the sound of happy tree frogs.

25 completed star blocks! All have the same solid blue/yellow and there are are different "Michigan" fabrics in the centers.

While the heat wave broke, it is still plenty warm out there. After I got the blocks done we went for a drive midday, or tried to anyway. I thought traffic seemed rather light for a major holiday weekend, and it was -- until we got to just south of Everett where it turned into bumper-to-bumper all lanes as far as the eye could see. We made it through to the first exit we could and had a lovely drive back home.

I'll be alternating these fan blocks with a print and fans alternating blocks. So today's task and count: 256 fan blades.

I'm using what I call the Eleanor Burns rickrack technique for the fans. Have already made the "pie" pieces and cut the foundation blocks.

Sunday Morning Update:
1. Finish binding on Debby Brown Quilt - Think it was February or March? Done... Picture below and it was the February DB.
2. Quilt UFO sandwiched quilt for donation - Done and trimmed for binding
3. Make binding for Quilt in #2 and get it on the quilt and finished.
4. Sew up 11 Christmas stockings for VA and cut another 12 for future mindless sewing moments.(12 of the stockings half done, doing lots of chain piecing, and finished 6. Cut the more but lost track of how many. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png)

I have another day to go so I just might finish the quilt! Love these long weekends. Just looked and I have TWO DAYS to go Yeah to extended long weekends. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

QuiltMom2 07-04-2021 04:22 AM

Better late than never! I've read with interest what everyone is doing and I'm longarming a queen sized scrap quilt and today I hope to piece another twin sized scrap top. I've been trying to empty three 40 gallon bins of strips and strings and I'm halfway through one of them. Alas, garden season is commencing and I may be starting bread and butter pickles if last night's rain has caused a cucumber explosion.

rryder 07-04-2021 04:26 AM

Ice Blossom- those blocks are looking good, I like the rickrack effect in the fans.

WMUteach- Your colorblock quilt is beautiful- congratulations on getting it done!

Rob

Iceblossom 07-04-2021 04:45 AM

I like both the visual and textural addition of the rickrack -- and this is a Lady Sports themed quilt... Aunt Debbie may indeed Bleed Blue but enjoys girly too :)

The rickrack seals the round edge -- you buy 1/2" rickrack, sew down the middle (1/4" seam allowance) on the top, and then flip it over and use that to seal the rounded edge, and then basically you just applique to the base. It goes fast and the curves are smooth and it's just nifty. This is my second top using both the technique and the John Flynn Template kit I bought.

Here's Eleanor showing it, the part with the fans comes in around minute 18:

Sunday Update

Well, another setback last night, my stomach just would not let me settle down enough to do anything of substance, so I laid back down and slept until about a half an hour ago. I feel better, stomach feels like it's on fire still but it's down substantially, so I'm calling the nap a win.

Today, going to take it easy, I'm working on one of the flower blocks this morning for my sister's quilt, when I got my bolt of muslin, I was expecting 44" - instead I got 36", which was my mistake when I looked back through my order, so I've got to slowly work out the math as I go along and adjust the pattern. Just means I need to cut a few more strips than normal, I'm okay with that. So basically, after I finish this block, I'm going to be cutting more strips and hopefully, I can put the bolt away and break down my sewing table so I can have my kitchen back.

Happy Fourth, everyone!

sewingpup 07-04-2021 06:19 AM

So impressed with what you all are getting done. Oh my, I think I am a fail! Instead of working on the numerous UFO's I have laying around here, I took a drive to my local quilt shop and bought another project! Well, not exactly a kit or anything. I had bought a couple of stripology rulers back a bit a go, and then a pattern....which called for a layer cake.....but I was planning on using scraps and then....boom! a trip to the quilt shop. Oh well....My county is about 67% vaccinated for adults and I was wanting to go shopping. Still put on my mask though....Sounds like my quilt shop is also not ready to fully open. they are planning on starting up in person classes again but will trying for a combo of on in person and zoom as the shop is small and they will limit the amount of students in person. I am totally OK with that and actually think I am going to zoom as then I don't have lug my bigger machine anywhere and won't have to drive (although it less than 3 miles away) during the winter...ok...there are a couple of BIG hills on the way. Happy Fourth everyone!

tallchick 07-04-2021 06:49 AM

Wow, I love what everyone is working on, progress is being made and that is always a good feeling! I’ve been up since 430 am, went and checked mail for work (that is a 1.5 hour round trip), hit Walmart when they opened at 7 am, got some laundry going and just finished weeding 1 of 3 flower beds, its already too hot so I am done with yard work for today. I have a few more chores inside to do, then I can get the final border on my current project, I may even get the backing on the longarm today if I have time.

happylab 07-04-2021 07:24 AM

Happy safe and fun 4th of July everyone. I enjoy seeing everyone’s pics and progress. Such lovely work.

Rryder, I like your fabric choices in Debbie Brown’s top and the way you are quilting the project. I’m curious are you planning on keeping it, gifting it, or giving away to a charity. I’m sure the receiver will enjoy the quilt.

I’m making slow progress on my list so far. I finished quilting long arming a baby top. I tried combining a few techniques and it didn’t turn out exactly how I had plan, but it came out okay. 3 more to go. Oh, well I did review and take notes on a 4 hour long arm embroidery zoom class I took 2 weeks ago, 6 hours later I was done with the basic notes. I want to review 2 more times to ensure my notes and actually complete one of the projects. I will get back to that in a few days.

Today & tomorrow I plan to trim and bind my queen size quilt, start my 4th of July mystery and sew a little on the pieces for my niece. In about 10 days she plans to come over and we will quilt the top to a minke backing. (That should be fun, I have never quilted with minke with my long arm). Finally I plan finish quilting the 3 baby tops for a friend. I figure today and tomorrow to complete my projects.

juliasb 07-04-2021 08:39 AM

I am making great progress on the binding of my pineapple quilt. I only have to stitch it down now and put on a label and it will be finished. All the machine sewing is completed. I will sit with DH this afternoon and evening and do the hand stitching. No rush on this one as we have a extra day here. I should be done by tomorrow if not sooner.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 05:35 AM.
