Virtual Quilting Weekend May 8-10, 2026
Welcome to the May 2026 VQW. I was prepping and cutting several children's kits this afternoon. Got an early start on the VQW! I have several projects laid out that I could work on the next couple days--machine applique, adding borders to a couple quilts, sewing rows together, machine embroidery, finish a couple Annie's bags. And of course, the never-ending sorting/organizing. We've been in the "new" house for eleven months yet and still not organized. I keep saying one of these days. As long as I'm able to actually use my machines, I just work around the mess! :)
So what are you all working on this weekend? Next month's VQW will be June 19-21. |
Oh, goodness, I was just passing by and here you are with our next VQW. I will be working on a graduation quilt. A very simple square in a square using my scraps from my batik bin. I have 50 finished and need about that many more. So this is cut and stitch weekend. Should I get that done or if I get bored with making the same block over and over, I have a UFO that is awaiting my attention.
Come on in everyone, join us for a virtual weekend of quilting and other projects. |
VQW how nice! Thanks for getting us together to share.
I've been in a quilting low the last couple of months, just been a slug since I finished this year's Bonnie Hunter project. I have my "next" project planned but I've been looking for a missing quilt book and some paper pieced patterns I drew out long ago. I know they got moved and I had them out and I've been looking for them ever since. Finally yesterday as part of my current clean up/organize project I found the paper patterns, the book is still missing but it was the graphs I needed -- they were in a semi-logical if entirely wrong place. Anyway, short form is that I will be doing clean up type stuff this weekend. It may not be fun but it is necessary. So I would love to see pictures of the wonderful stuff all of you are doing. |
I'll be working on my scrap tub of leftover jelly roll pieces....just have to whittle this tub down somehow. I've already made 9 patch blocks, and four patches that have extra rounds on each side that look like semi-potato chips blocks, The tub isn't getting any smaller! I've come across more than a few black with white strips and white with black that I'm trying to think of something different to do with. Plus I have a smaller tote of 1 1/2" strips that I have an idea for. So I'll be sewing up lots of blocks to use somewhere further down the line.
|
I'm going to try and get some in. I need to mark my quilting pattern on my top since I will be doing FMQ with on my mini frame. First time for me on a real quilt and I don't want to rip anything out because if I am not consistent. I also need to press and sew my backing together. We will see how much I get accomplished with everything else that goes on in a day.
Cheers, Shari |
Hello everyone! Happy to spend the weekend together with you. I'll be working on two projects: one is hand piecing a EPP top and the other is a long time UFO wallhanging at my machine. The EPP is an on going project I acquired from a fellow quilter on the Board. The wall hanging is day lilies in a water pitcher and machine appliqued.

Well, today I'm taking the day off with my sister to do our bi-weekly shopping. We hit the thrift store first, then one of our local grocery stores, then back home here for lunch. Then my sister has a double nail appt so I'll be stitching my blocks into rows. I've already got the 1st 3 rows put together and have the last 3 rows to put together, take all the paper off as they were all paper pieced, then combine the 2 sets of rows. Add the border and hang it up to quilt later as I have no idea how I'm going to quilt it. I made the Cog in a Wheel patter for a gentleman in my congregation in fabrics with metallics of copper, silver and golds with a background of mottled greys. I plan on using the scraps to make up the piped binding just to use them up and to add a little bit more color. Hopefully I'll have this bad boy ready to hang up by the end of tomorrow. Wish me luck. I finished the last of the blocks yesterday working all day long to get them finished.

Happy weekend! I'm working on Brightly today at Friendship Quilters sew day...the star blocks 🙂
|
Good morning, all!
Raggiemom, I have rearranged my workroom space so many times. It is never ending! I have 4 blocks made from YT video, but their pattern that I copied has 4 points converging in corner that I want to be the center. Too much bulk . So, I drew a new design to try today. Not sure the direction of this quilt. I am designing as I go. Ideas are swirling around. I have the next pixel quilt kitted, but I am not ready to start another one yet. Once I start one, it is a commitment to the process. I made the cross stitch piece, a colorful marlin, and it is cute! I'll snap some pics before I start working. |

Oh good it started early thanks! I might get some stitching in this morning on Common Ground, a tutorial recently on Missouri *.. i decided to try it scrappy, so have 4 blocks made and think it will be fun, just the white is a constant.
This afternoon I get to attend a Mother’s Day tea at my GD’s daycare, then babysit her later, and tomorrow I get to go to a special “strings” performance and lunch out at a lovely garden, that I haven’t been to in years. Maybe Sunday will bring some more stitching. I did fuse some crows from a free mug-rug tutorial, IF I like them when finished I will pop them into the mail for a friend. |
Thanks for hosting, Raggiemom!
I've helped a friend set up quilt sale items at annual spring fling for church, now I'm going to load and get start quilting a Harry Potter quilt. I can always pick up the sewing room. The gremlin that lives there sure does make a mess in addition to temporarily hiding certain presser feet, marking pens, patterns, etc! |
Good day everyone!!! My goals this weekend: 1 = complete sewing the top on cotton cuts 5.0 Island Hopping. I have 1.5 clues to complete on this mystery. Next I need to iron all clues 1 to 4. Then I can sew the blocks and top together. #2 project = cut out construction site twin kid kit. It’s super easy to throw together. #3 = cut out Brown Bag mystery (BBM) clues 1 to 4. So I can sew on it the next few weeks. 4. = cut out my lock-in 2026 mystery. Then I can sew at my leisure. 5. = in-between I want to gather scraps to iron fabric for Mount Scrapmore with Brenda (from face book) for the chaos mystery 2025. Free patterns on you tube. Need to watch videos for directions. That should keep me busy for this weekend and month. Happy sewing/quilting everyone.

I just finished putting together this scrappy dogs quilt
next I have some yardage I won and think I will do a simple rail fence. Or perhaps cut the blocks on the diagonal and set as a 3 dudes pattern. After that I want to make those dogs in purple and blues. Think I will make the tail and ear as HST. |
Redesigned my batik graduation quilt and won't need as many blocks. So, I finished the blocks this afternoon, now on to adding narrow black sashing. I may need to purchase more black because what I have on hand is not enough of one color black. Ya would think black is .... black but it isn't. I will dig a little more before hitting the fabric shop.

Iceblossom, WMUTeach--so glad you found the VQW :)
aashley333--I think "organizing" the quilting room qualifies as a WIP for many of us thimblebug6000--sounds like you have a lovely weekend planned It's been a productive day here. I started my day off in the kitchen and made a chocolate zucchini cake with chocolate peanut butter frosting--mmmm. A few weeks ago, I took a barn quilt block class. It is ready for the sealant so I applied the first coat today. Will apply the second and third coats tomorrow. Cut four more quilt kits for charity. Then I assembled the dinosaur applique quilt top. No organizing today! |
Yay! Lots of great projects happening! Let me tell you….some of the 3-5 yr olds are really a challenge for those daycare ladies….you couldn’t pay me enough to do it! Of course I am 74…..and most of them are 50 yrs younger😜. They had craft tables set up with beading, colouring and nail polish…Omi is now sporting 2 bright pink nails courtesy of my 5 yr GD ❤️. I did get a couple more blocks stitched this morning, and one of my crow mug rugs ready to hand stitch the binding on my + one hour trip in the morning.

Thanks for hosting Raggiemom. My weekend plan is to make more progress on my winter holiday quilt. I need to make a
bunch of flying geese. |

I also made flying geese today. I had my first quilting class. Then I came home and sewed more. That I can easily do this for 12 hours is kinda disturbing, but I no longer fear geese.
|
Cedar, when I taught beginner quilting classes at the quilt shop, I could always tell the persons who would continue to quilt. They were the people that came to class with all the correct supplies and went home after class and make more blocks to practice what they learned in class. You are one of those that will continue. Happy quilting!
|
I didn't get as much done as I planned. The weather was so nice, hubby and I decided to take an unplanned hike on a forest trail we hadn't done yet. It was a great day for a hike once home I did get a few more EPP pieces added but that was about all I did in the way of sewing. Maybe today I'll get more done.
|
I am getting a ton done! I just wish it was sewing related...
Is amazing how when you clean up one area, how the area next to it instead of looking better now needs more attention! And when I take chores off the list new ones like "buy/install dimmer for dinning room light" get put on. |
I'm doing my usual-sandwiching and quilting on a Project Linus quilt and then working on a patriotic type table runner for the 250th. I also need to finish a Challenge for my Guild that's due in 2 weeks! Nowhere near done! Its tiny but mighty lol.

Attachment 654770I just love these weekends. I love the enthusiasm and thrill of knowing others are working on projects and striving to accomplish a project just like me. I have been plugging along on this top. It again is triangles that I learned in the class with Barbara Cline at AQS New England. It is mimicking the Sparkle pattern on Sewcanshe.com, a free pattern on the web site. I have said in previous posts, I love this concept, one block, multiple different quilts. I have enough triangles for three throw size quilts. Then all the patriotic fabric will be used up. I figured with our Country's 250th birthday this, it was quite appropriate to keep going with the patriotic theme. 😆 I jstill need to add two more rows to complete the width of it and am planning to add a border to get added length. The ombre triangles is fabric pulled from stash. Its so nice to see and read what everyone is doing or working on this VQW In will plan to check in tomorrow and catch up on everyones progress.

I'm happy to say I was able to finish putting this Cog in a Wheel pattern together yesterday. Today, my sister and I will sit and pull off the paper backing on the 2nd half of the quilt. We pulled off the paper on the 1st half a week ago. Then this quilt will go on my "Waiting Pole" to be quilted once my new floor (epoxy type but not epoxy) is installed in June. Here are some photos of it finished and a pic of the quilt pattern itself if anyone is interested.

I managed to add an additional row to my EPP top. I also laid out and stitched parts of the next row. I stitch them together in smaller sections as I find it easier to manage them when sewing to the main top. I don't think I even got near my studio to work on my second project.
|
I'm still working on cleaning my sewing room, which also means ironing and cutting up scraps to put in their respective drawers, I'll probably STILL be doing the same thing NEXT Sunday, LOL

Snooze! Love the Cog quilt and the colors you chose!
DD is visiting, and I didn't sew a stitch yesterday. And phone would not send photos for some reason. Nail salon took all morning, and the afternoon was sunny, so we all lounged in the pool. After Mother's Day breakfast, Aubry is heading home, so I'll start adding the binding to the second design that I drew. The video has me create 8 blocks which will become 2 four patches. As I said, I drew a second design so that the binding did not converge 4 pieces in a corner. The square is 8". I now need to design more ideas if I plan on continuing down this path. Finally got 1 picture to send from phone. Designing is my favorite! I am also looking at this block and wondering how I will quilt it when done... |
Wanting to wish everyone a happy's mother day. It is not a holiday we observe in any way, but acknowledgement of the people in our lives is always good.
We have gotten so much done in the last couple of days, today is our usual Bowling Date Day but we got the errands run yesterday so it will be nice to be able to have a day to just relax and appreciate our efforts of the last week. After our live bowling in the morning, hubby will be watching bowling on tv in the afternoon. I really appreciate the lovely pictures! |
Aashley333…what a stunning block you created! You surely do have more patience than me sticking with it!
just starting my morning it’s just past 7 am so enjoying my coffee…I did cut a few strips of fabric while waiting for my coffee. It is kind of a grey day out there so will probably spend some time stitching later. DD and I will have our luncheon tomorrow. |

A few blocks together this morning but will stop and go to a local store celebrating Spring today, and buy some seeds etc. will check in again later, these are not in their final order until I get the last few blocks made, I am almost out of the white.
|
I got the black fabric for the graduation quilt yesterday. I am taking today away from the machine. I may cut Boom Blocks and lay out my UFO. Sewing in the morning, tomorrow.
|
Well this is really strange. I typed a long message yesterday and for some reason it’s disappeared. Suffice it to say I had a productive day yesterday! And I commented on several posts. 🥺🤨
Today I had a book to finish for book club. Since I’m leading it, I thought it important to read it and be prepared to lead the discussion. see you all next month! |

aashly333, love your fabrics you chose. As to mine, this quilt came out at 78 x 78 so an over oversized lap quilt but he's a big guy also. He's into motorcycles and metals so reason why I chose the fabrics I did. My sister and I were able to pull all the paper backing off yesterday after lunch so it's ready to be quilted when I get my machine room put back together after the new flooring has been installed in early June.

Such a productive session!
Raggiemom, who among us has lost a post? Me. I think I must have not hit the send button. I decided to put the new method from video on back burner, so I put the fabrics and patterns in a "kit" tub and move on to the next pixel quilt. My tunnel vision gets worse as I get closer to the end of these projects. I have examined the pattern and prints from the kit that I boxed up. Thankfully, I labeled each planned piece of fabric before storing. Today, lots of 3/4" squares...Perhaps the first block! I snapped a pic of my project beginning. It is a nice feeling to have a plan! |

I had a lot of other stuff to do over the weekend. We are getting ready for a trip next weekend, my dad needed help with the cows, and there was Mother's Day to keep me busy, but since Id just taken the sewing machine out for the class I kept it at home instead of the sewing room at my grandma's old house I usually use, and I was able to get a bunch more blocks sewn. Only 8 more to go before I lay them out and decide what is needed for the final quilt.
