Virtual Quilting Weekend -- Thanksgiving Weekend

Welcome to the Thanksgiving Virtual Quilting Weekend. Hopefully many of you will be able to join me this weekend in some type of quilt related activity. If you are new to VQW, we post on this thread what we're working on, pictures are welcome. We encourage each other, and often inspire each other for future projects. I will be in and out over the weekend but hope to get some quilting in myself. I have been finishing up several projects since our last VQW and would like to get more done :)

And Happy Thanksgiving!

sewingitalltogether 11-24-2016 06:00 AM

I will sewing this weekend. Have a deadline on Tuesday. My Judy Neimeyer Cactus Rose is ready to assemble. Giving it to the quilter on Tuesday. Also getting back my Dresden Bloom. Yeah!! But hoping I don't have too many hitches.

tkhooper 11-24-2016 06:06 AM

I have errors in the Tropical Seascape quilt that need to be ripped out and re-fmq'ed. Say that three times fast, lol. So I am definitely in.

I will be sandwiching this and starting to quilt after eating tons of turkey. lol This is my first time using heat and bond lite. I sure hope it softens up when I wash the quilt. I am backing it with dark brown minky. This is also my first time doing the fusible applique.

Why do pictures turn sideways when they are correct on my laptop? geez

elly66 11-24-2016 06:30 AM

Looks wonderful even sideways:). I'm so hoping to get some time working on three quilts I would love to have done by Christmas. So I'll try real hard to sneak away for that though my sewing room is currently a guest room.

Love the coffee quilt! I have a simple baby blanket (Troll fabric front, flannel back with a large crosshatch to hold them together) to trim and bind this weekend, I finished the Arkansas crossroads quilt top that I was working on during the last VQW, I was planning just flannel for the back also but haven't proceeded further with it yet, I have some Hobbs heirloom but not sure if I want it to be that heavy. Have to think about it some more.

cjsews 11-24-2016 07:22 AM

I certainly hope to find time for sewing. The big family dinner, then Black Friday shopping tonight and probably tomorrow. Family are in town for the weekend but I should be able to work some sewing in there somewhere. Happy thanksgiving everyone

I will join - I am on a roll this week! I only had one grandkid and no chauffeur duties so I got a lot done already and we are having our T-day feast on Sunday so I have all day today and tomorrow to sew to my heart's content!
I finished binding my Bonnie Hunter mystery from last year

and this sweet pillow got quilted and sewn together

and a Christmas stocking for DGS was completed and ready to be sewn into a stocking

and I am halfway done with the quilting on this baby quilt for a new GD coming in January.

And I have the fabrics pulled for clue 1 of the new Bonnie Hunter mystery which starts tomorrow!

So happy to find this thread. My usual plan for Thanksgiving weekend is sewing/quilting. I belong to a bee that has monthly sleep-at-home retreats, and it seems Thanksgiving weekend always falls into the regular schedule. Still not sure if I'll go this weekend because I have a commitment for a bunch of pillow covers. Nothing like a real commitment to make me procrastinate.

They are all sports themed using NFL and college team fabric. Very simple with no creativity whatsoever. Now I won't feel alone in my little marathon.

mollymunchkin 11-24-2016 08:12 AM

I'm in. I have one more strip to go on 15 blocks to be finished with the blocks for my nephew's shadow box quilt. My goal is to have the flimsy started, although I would prefer finished by the end of the weekend.

SHELTIE'SMAMA 11-24-2016 08:21 AM

I'm in with my 480HST christmas top. Hopefully can learn to post pictures (powering up my tablet as we speak). Will get it sandwiched and maybe even start the quilting. But first turkey and guests. See you later tonight.

retiredteacher09 11-24-2016 08:57 AM

I'm in! Thanks for hosting again, Raggiemom. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I chose not to go out of town for Thanksgiving today so I will be sewing as much as my body allows me too! Lol!

Great pictures of projects!

My goals for today:

1. Clean off my cutting area. I'm at the point of just putting it in a box to sort later. :)

2. Cut and sew more blocks for one of my UFO's.

3. I have a couple of leader/ender projects that I will be sewing as I work on goal 2.

4. Move my serger downstairs.

5. Hopefully cheer the Vikings on to a win while I'm organizing/sewing today!

i'm in, too!! I am almost finished hand-quilting my quilt for my brother, and I want to double down and try to get it done this weekend. Kinda ambitious, but will see...

rryder 11-24-2016 09:45 AM

I'm in. Don't know how much I'll get done since we have out-of-town guests till Sunday and 14 (counting us) for dinner today, but will definitely spend time checking in to see what everyone's doing. My goals if I manage to get anything done are:
1. clean up my studio spaces so I can get to my cutting board and sewing machines.
2. work on a UFO that I'm a little stuck on how I want to finish.
3. Figure out what I'm making for Christmas presents for my barn friends--I need to come up with 6 presents. I've done placemats, potholders, and crocheted scarves in the past, so those are out. Ideas anyone? Mug rugs????? It needs to be something quick since our get-together to exchange gifts is Dec. 12.

Happy sewing everyone and for those in the USA Happy Thanksgiving.

Rob

Dolphyngyrl 11-24-2016 10:46 AM

My goal this weekend is to start my tuffet, the foundations are ready and fabric is cut

Macybaby 11-24-2016 11:05 AM

I got off work a bit early yesterday and don't have to be back to work until Monday! So lots of sewing time!

I'm working on the borders of the OMG quilt I've worked on the last two VQW - hopefully I'll have it to "floppy" stage soon.

LTeachergeorge 11-24-2016 12:13 PM

I''m in, also!! Have son and dil here from out of state, but they are with her family today. They leave tomorrow afternoon so I''ll have time to accomplish something! Thank you for hosting this!

I am happy to report that I finished the quilting on the giraffe baby quilt! Still in the learning phase of FMQing with my sitdown Sweet 16 so I tried lots of different motifs - continuous curves, loops, stippling, free motion ribbons, bows and flowers, waves etc.

Macybaby 11-24-2016 05:25 PM

I've got the border figured out and ready to sew together.

I've been up since 4am, so I'm going to quit for the night and go read a book. Tomorrow I'll need to get it sewn together before I start anything new - I've got the border spread all over!

quiltingshorttimer 11-24-2016 05:55 PM

:( Not me--have kids and g-kids here until about 10am Sunday and with 2 of the g-kids 2 & 3 yrs it's like a circus! Thankfully, both of them asleep right now and "all quiet on the home front!".

cashs_mom 11-24-2016 07:21 PM

I'll be trying to finish the quilt that I am making for our receptionist at work. I'm hoping to get it far enough along to post some pics.

I'm working on another scrappy string quilt. This will be my third and I still have a boat load of strings.

I will be finishing the quilting on this mini quilt. There isn't that much quilting left to do, so hopefully I can also get the binding on this too.

We always set up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, so I am very hopeful that I will have time on Saturday and Sunday for quilting. My DD asked me to make a couple of pillow cases for 2 of her kids at work and crochet 5 eternity scarves for friends. (I am happy to say - the scarves are done.) This is the time of year I make bookmarks for my other DD's students. Luckily, this year she only has 24 students. But I want to very much to finish a baby quilt and it is just sitting patiently waiting for me to get to it.

jmoore 11-25-2016 04:21 AM

Yeah, this is the time of year I can actually participate in VQW. I spent a few hours yesterday tidying up my sewing/guest room for my BIL and SIL arriving on Sunday...

I am going to study more on how to post photos from my Ipad as I have been unsuccessful since I got it and I have a few projects that I am working on that I would like to share. I am going to rent a LA on Monday so that I can quilt a two-year old UFO called Taylored Stars.. a Doug Leko pattern from Antler Design. He came to Maine a couple years ago to teach a class and I have finally finished the top.

Karamarie 11-25-2016 04:31 AM

The first clue of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt comes out today so I will be printing out the first clue and starting that. Although today is also my day to put away Thanksgiving and start my Christmas decorating so a busy weekend. Have fun all.

quilterpurpledog 11-25-2016 05:02 AM

I am doing two wall hangings as Christmas gifts. They are pieced and use fusible applique. I hope to make great progress because I have lots of other Christmas projects (less labor intensive) yet to do.

beadywoman 11-25-2016 05:14 AM

Count me in! I want to work on my Tula Pink kit. Gotta do a little shifting around so that I can use the cutting table first, though.

lovelyl 11-25-2016 06:06 AM

I need to sandwich two quilt tops and decide how to quilt them. I also need to clean off my cutting table...

QuiltingVagabond 11-25-2016 06:27 AM

macybaby, that border will be perfect

I have chili simmering in the kitchen, I am off to make some neutral 4 patches for the Bonnie Hunter mystery. Cya later!

Macybaby 11-25-2016 06:40 AM

I shouldn't need to do any cooking today or tomorrow while DH and I eat up leftovers.

I decided I needed to add another row down to the OMG quilt. Right now it has an even number of rows and it's throwing off one of the corners. So I'm cutting out more to make another row - not real happy to do that, but once it's done I'll forget about the extra work and enjoy the quilt. If I didn't, every time I looked at the quilt I'd think that I probably should have fixed it.

I'm also doing the BH mystery, but that will wait for a day until I get this one done.

Splinter 11-25-2016 07:22 AM

I want to start the BH mystery, and I have my fabrics ready for it. However, my sewing space is a cluttered mess! At least five different projects are in different stages of the creative process, so I'm organizing and putting things where they belong before starting any sewing. The last thing I need is to start another project, but I have been so pleased with past BH mysteries that I don't want to miss out on this one. So much of the fun lies in working along with others even though we don't know exactly where we are going.

To keep myself from completely neglecting other projects during this mystery, I've decided to use it as a reward project. I can sew the clues only after I have made some progress on one of my plentiful, prior projects. Games like this are necessary to keep my quilty life from becoming the old lady who lived in the shoe.

Raggiemom 11-25-2016 08:24 AM

I'm quilting the dahlia quilt that I pieced last VQW. I hope to have it done by the end of the weekend. It's not actually what I planned to work on though, I was going to finish Christmas presents!

Thanks Becca! I really like the color and pattern of your quilt, hope you make some good progress on it this weekend. I've been waylaid with a bad head cold so haven't gotten anything accomplished yet, hopefully tomorrow and Sunday will be more productive.

MadQuilter 11-25-2016 10:02 AM

I just love seeing what everyone is working on. Yesterday was an absolutely lazy day for us. DH and the dog are still recovering from surgeries so Nurse Martina decided to just kick back too. Today I WILL go in my room. Not sure if I will work on a UFO or make a new top. Need to make one for a sick relative.

Kitsie 11-25-2016 10:33 AM

That large quilt is sooo very beautiful! Not to say you other projects aren't also, but the color and pattern are stunning!

Kitsie 11-25-2016 10:38 AM

I'll be doing the 82nd Splendid Sampler block until the football games come on, then back to hand-quilting my Dresden!

My TG dinner consisted of a Marie Callender's Roast beef dinner. And after I had cooked it, I found someone had forgotten to put the roast in! Luckily I had a 2nd in the freezer!

When a picture turns sideways, save it in .png format instead and it won't turn sideways when you upload it.

Christine, thanks for the sideways picture information, I didn't know that!
