What is the difference between the two?
Why is one better than the other? Does the vodka not attack bugs? |

Starch will attrack bugs AND roaches. I personally use sizing which DOESN'T attrack bugs. Vodka...well I have never used vodka. So I haven't any idea sorry. Someone will know soon I am sure.

I read somewhere that Costume Designers use vodka because it gives just the right amount of crispness without any smell.
|
The difference? Vodka has alcohol, Starch doesn't!
I only drink vodka. Starch , not so good  I've never really heard of this. Seems expensive and a waist of good vodka! |
vodka and cranberry with a splash of lime. starch and cranberry....not so good.

Tears in my eyes.

My understanding is that you mix a few drops of essential oil into the vodka (a small amount of the cheapest stuff you can find), and then add distilled water. The vodka does something to spread the oil throughout the bottle so that the oil doesn't get on the fabric. You then use it for pressing.
Hope that makes sense! |
Are we being punk'd?
Edited to say, if we are supposed to be voting, I vote for the vodka. |

I've never used either, but I may try the vodka idea. I don't like starch (except on my dinner plate). With vodka & cranberry in my glass. ;-) |
Vodka mixed with water is good for getting out wrinkles without the stiffness of starch.
|
Linen spray isn't a starch but smells nicer than plain water to spritz fabric before ironing.
The vodka is to kill any germs in your water so if you keep the EO and water for a while it won't grow nasties (bacteria). Shake well before using. It adds a nice scent to linens when sprayed before bedtime and the alcohol evaporates so it dries faster. Some EO's will discolor fabric so test before using. |

Proof positive that Vodka is good for you -after all it kills germs in water - and humans are 90 - 94% water; ergo Vodka kills germs in humans! Gotta go -- still time before last call to kill a few germs! |
I learn so much from this board! Now I can press fabric, erase wrinkles, and kill germs with just one product.
|
I had never heard of the vodka use for quilting either...when I saw this post, I actually thought it may be someone who was having some troubles with starching...and was contemplating a sip or 2 of vodka...lol...now, mind you, I don't drink...so, I can't use that excuse as to why I didn't get this post at 1st...lol...

I use it as a substitute for Best Press. I think the formula is 1 cup of H20, 2 oz vodka and a few drops of essential oil but you can skip the oil because it's just for the scent. I don't really measure. I just almost fill my spray bottle with water, pour in some of my husband's vodka and I add only 2 drops of essential oil in a linen scent. Mix it up really well and it works great and is cheap, especially since DH doesn't know I use his vodka, LOL.
I like the occasional martini but not while sewing or pressing! If you do a QB search for Best Press you'll see all kinds of discussions on this topic. Good luck with however you decide to use the vodka!! |
Are you pulling my leg?
Vodka? |
I have heard of this but always wonder why someone would pay that price even to drink. We do not drink and even if it was the best starch money could buy I would not ues it. Someone would see me buy it and that would be the end of my testimony of faith.

Drink a little, spray a little and the time just may go faster and faster... Somehow, I don't think my children are going to believe this when I start tipping into my SIL's vodka bottle. :-P :-P
|
Takes the wrinkles out of me, especially with a splash of tonic & twist of lime. But I let the steam iron take out the wrinkles, on fabric that is.
Hey, what if I just put the vodka in the steam iron, and away we go ! |

Never heard of using Vodka! I don't really like starch, so I got me some sizing. Wanted that bounce ironing spray, but they don't have it at my WM, not yet anyway!
|
Maybe you're supposed to drink the vodka before you starch. You'll be much more relaxed.
|
Sounds like a waste of vodka to me!!!!

I haven't added vodka to my starch but I do add Lavender essential oil . I havent' had a problem that I know of with bacteria. It doesn't last on the fabric just while I am ironing. Maybe I should use basil or lemon to wake me up. I will keep the vodka in mind.

Wow, what a great way to use up all of that Vodka we've got sitting around. I like an occational drink made with Vodka, but I'd become an alcaholic in no time if I started trying to drink up our stash of Vodka. Loved all of the replys and I learned something new today. Thanks QuiltingBoard.
