VQW—Jan 14-17, 2022

Welcome to the January VQW. What will you be working on this weekend? I have a couple quilts to quilt and bind this weekend. Hope to squeeze in some epp and some foundation paper piecing as well.

Raggiemom 01-13-2022 04:58 PM

Next months VQW will be February 18-21.

Good evening Heather, thank you for hosting this thread.

my projects this weekend. 1. Quilt & bind a baby quilt. 2. Quilt a throw quilt for a friend. 3. Continue to work on my BHMQ-21 (this years) pieces.

quiltedsunshine 01-13-2022 07:00 PM

I'm working on Granada Garden with William Morris fabrics. Here's a link to the pattern: https://www.keepsakequilting.com/Gra...-Quilt-Pattern

12 of the 13 Mariner's Compass blocks are pieced and 10 have the hand appliqued centers finished. I hope to piece the last Mariner's Compass and finish appliqueing 3 centers. Then start on the "Ogee" shapes.

Rff1010 01-14-2022 12:16 AM

I have a pink n grey simple squares that I need to finish the backing and I desperately need to clean up. In non sewing I still have my tree up and that needs tending...

tallchick 01-14-2022 03:00 AM

Thanks for hosting again Heather! I am looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on! Allitare is in its final stages and just needs the rows sewn together, then to decide what to do for the borders. I love this quilt but am ready to move on to the next project.

jmoore 01-14-2022 04:08 AM

Yes, thank you Heather….I also have a quilt that needs binding. Looking forward to joining in this weekend and seeing what you all are up to. 😊

I have a new pattern that I would like to cut fabric for and begin piecing. I purchased a FQ bundle last year and Moda had a free pattern. Layer Cake Lollies https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vbKgZtNwDRY

2. Finish or at least get closer to the finish of my Alcott Civil War quilt.- on point with sashing and then setting triangles.
3. Square up remaining 16 patches for a donation quilt
4. Make 40 something four patches for the above donation quilt

Looking forward to this dedicated quilting time.

QuiltMom2 01-14-2022 04:48 AM

Count me in! Working on a Bonnie Hunter "jamestown Landing" scrap quilt after I get some more scrap units assembled for my friend. She has limited cutting space.

cjsews 01-14-2022 05:19 AM

Thanks for hosting. This is the perfect weekend with snow in the forecast. I am again working on my economy block quilt. IF I get it done I will start on You Gnome How Much I Love You, a M* pattern.

Watson 01-14-2022 05:34 AM

I'm working on a wall hanging. It's one of those things that look great in my head...we will see how it transposes into fabric!

Iceblossom 01-14-2022 05:52 AM

Thank you for bringing us together again :)

Today is the reveal/last clue for the current Bonnie Hunter mystery. I have some setting units to build, and a border, and decision on what fabric to add. All in all, a pretty full VQWQ

Me too. I will be sewing. Have been working on my UFO challenge on American Patchwork and Quilting. Have my ornaments quilt ready to go to the quilters and am finishing up the hand appliqué on my tulips quilt.

Karamarie 01-14-2022 07:40 AM

I'm working on adding a border to my 5" hexagons quilt. Snowing here so a good time to do that.

donac 01-14-2022 07:52 AM

I will be putting borders on my son's quilt. Then hopefully baste it so I can start hand quilting. I also want to start cutting out a black white and grey quilt for my other son.

It is supposed to be a nasty weekend so I ordered groceries to be picked up, going to make chicken soup for dinner and I think I will have lots of time

Gemm 01-14-2022 07:55 AM

I'm working on putting diagonal block sets together (not my usual layout and I'm discovering all sorts of things as I go) and am hoping to get the quilt top finished today. Probably won't get much further than that as I don't think I have a piece of batting large enough for the size it will finish at. I do have another project in the wings, though (another requested I Spy!), and might start on that as well if a trip to the LQS doesn't happen. Good luck everyone!

juliasb 01-14-2022 10:38 AM

My project is to finish at least 3 blocks for a QAL that I started last summer. I am getting closer to having all the blocks finished.

Beautiful pattern. Looks like ....brain fart.... Well it was there just a minute ago.

Cam's gram 01-14-2022 01:34 PM

I'm in. I have a throw quilt top cut out and would like to get the top done and at least start quilting it. This is the fourth quilt I have made from my closet in a row.. I bought kits and made my own kits of quilts back when I was still working. I didn't just buy fabric, I would buy for a whole quilt. Didn't have the time then to make them but am now making some of them. Really still like them.

Polliwog 01-14-2022 02:05 PM

Working on Bonnie Hunter's current mystery quilt "Rhododendron Trail" to use up many pink fabrics leftover from previous projects. The challenge - not running out of the white print background I chose instead of her multi neutral prints. Here in North Georgia we are expecting rain, sleet, ice, and snow!

Raggiemom 01-14-2022 03:10 PM

Sounds like Bonnie Hunter patterns are quite popular this weekend!

quiltedsunshine--Mariners Compass is one of my favorite designs. I have an EPP one I'm in the middle of stitching together. I'm planning a paper pieced one sometime this year. And I have Quiltsmart interfacing to make one :)

jmoore--looks like a great pattern for some charity quilts

It's been a productive day. I finished two of the quilts today and pinned two more. Tomorrow morning our guild is having a virtual sew-in so I have some wool applique out to work on. Hopefully will be back on the machine in the afternoon.

Railroadersbrat 01-14-2022 03:38 PM

Thanks again for hosting, Heather!

I am not sure how much I'm going to get done this weekend, I had a pretty bad fall on Wednesday that resulted in me going back to urgent care just as I was coming home from urgent care. I twisted my ankle up, which is wrapped in an ACE Bandage but sadly, it's my driving foot for my sewing machine. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to extend my foot for long periods and my fall table quilt I started is actually ready for me to sew the blocks together.

I'm still doing the Declutter Challenge with Karen Brown, so whatever daily challenges she gives, I know I'll be able to at least get those done. I'm really hoping we start dealing with scraps and fabric at some point this weekend, I think I've found all the scraps I'll find and I need to get through them to decide what to do with them next.

Regardless, I am going to be in my sewing corner for most of the weekend, I just don't know what I'll work on.

NZquilter 01-14-2022 03:56 PM

I have big plans for this weekend and hopefully I'll be able to get some of it done! This afternoon I finished packaging up all the 2.5" charms for the birthday candy swap. (If anyone wants a mailbox full of quilty goodness on your birthday, please join us!) I have some quilting to rip out, because my sweet four year old daughter fiddled with my tension dial and I didn't notice until I had finished! So, I plan to rip that out and finish that quilting. Then, I know this sounds crazy, but I am making some Christmas ornaments for next year! A shop I follow on Etsy had some super cute felt ornament kits on sale so I bought two. I will put them away for next year and they will be new and fresh again.

Sewingitalltogether- This is sew bright and cheerful! Looking forward to seeing it finished, your appliqué is lovely.

Got all the rows sewn together, so tomorrow I will go through each row and make sure there are no turned pieces then I have to wait for one of the border fabrics to arrive.

I will probably continue pulling patterns and fabrics as I decide what projects I want to work on this year.

Sync 01-14-2022 06:08 PM

Raggiemom, thanks for hosting this VQW. Count me in too. Not sure what I will work on but I do have several projects.

Gemm 01-14-2022 07:13 PM

Achieved my first goal. The quilt top is done (pictures will come once I can convince a lovely assistant to hold it for me as the shots I take of it on the floor are just so wonky and awkward). Going to call it a night but hope to be able to start something else to keep everyone company this weekend. :-)

jmoore 01-15-2022 05:04 AM

Gail, your appliqué quilt is cheerful and bright…it is coming along nicely. It is 2 degrees here this morning and in the negatives with the wind chill factor so a great day to stay in my sewing room. 🤗

Sounds like everyone has plenty to keep them busy.

rryder 01-15-2022 05:32 AM

Yay! I missed the post yesterday, but got a little bit of quilting done on my Doodle quilt. Today I want to finish up quilting one of the flowers on the doodle quilt. I also want to get the background fabrics cut for the October Color Block quilt so I can get it put together someday.

RRbrat- I too am doing the Just get it Done declutter challenge. I dealt with pins and needles the other day, but haven't yet done the sewing notions as I did a major declutter of those a couple of years ago. Still I should look at what I've got now and see if there's anything more that I can let go of...

Looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on this weekend! Thanks for hosting, Raggiemom.

A Saturday morning update:
made some serious progress on cutting my 2.5 squares. Trying to be really organized with the cutting, sorting and putting the left over fabric back into storage in a neat and organized manner. More to go but the end is in sight.

I created all of the four patches for my donation quilt and squared up the 16 patches.

Raggiemom and Quiltedsunsine, I am on the hunt for a mariners compass pattern. Can you share either here or by PM some sources that you have used and like, books or patterns. One of my "To Do" quilts this year is for the sailor husband of a friend. I found a book several year ago and muttered the famous last words, "I'll get it the next time I'm in the shop". Needless to say it wasn't there and have no idea the name of the book. Thanks all.

Back to this weekend's list. :)

Railroadersbrat 01-15-2022 07:48 AM

Rryder - I love her challenges so much, I swear she's thought of things that I generally would have passed over had I been on my own. I don't think my sewing corner has ever been this organized before and getting rid of things that I have held onto just for the sake of 'I don't want to deal with that today' has been quite liberating. I'm really anxious to get into the scraps, but I know if I start down that road before I'm ready, I'm just going to de-organize everything I've already organized, lol!

I am so restless today, it is unreal. I'm not sure if it's the weather or the fact that I'm laid up with my ankle or what it is, but I can't stay focused on much. I have two organizers to make, something from Lisa Pay I'm itching to start and I'd like to try and at least get the blocks sewn together and ready to be sewn into rows when I feel my ankle can handle it. Hexies to sew together, Karen's challenge today is get through the UFOs we have and make a final decision on whether or not we want to finish them or scrap them. I only have one and that's going into the trash but it means getting out my chest, which will lead me to declutter it.

Ugh, too many things to do and not enough brain power to decide what to do.

Iceblossom 01-15-2022 11:37 AM

I had cut/sewn twice as much fabric for one step as I needed to on my Bonnie Hunter project and I came out about 2" short of my neutral (white) to finish the top. So close but so far! I switched from Kona to AMB a couple years ago... anyway, I don't have a current local store but I have some on order and it should arrive in the coming week.

I'm sure I can keep busy working on the border until the package arrives.

I'm also working on sorting fabric. I'll be moving this year and I will be moving fabric but not all the fabric I currently have... I ordered some plastic totes to see if I like them. They just came and seem to be just fine so I will order more -- but I have enough for a start of the things I know I want to take.

tallchick 01-15-2022 12:17 PM

Got the top all together and at a standstill the the remaining border fabric comes in next week sometime. I went the shed and started up the snow blower and moved it into the garage in preparation for this coming storm, who knows what we will end up with, better to be on the safe side. I am too old to shovel snow, or maybe just too darn lazy to spend hours doing it.

rryder 01-15-2022 12:56 PM

Got a little more quilting done on the doodle quilt. Also took care of some chores that needed doing before tomorrow's snow/ice storm gets here. I'm hoping that the pet friendly ice melt I ordered gets here (supposed to come today) as I'm all out of that and the kitty litter that I use when I can't get ice melt. Now I'm going to try to make myself work on cutting out the background fabric for the October color block quilt. Don't know why I'm being so unenthusiastic about it, I've chosen several neat fabrics that I think will look really good with the color blocks, but I'm just not feeling the desire to work on this one. I really want to work on a project that I've had in the back of my mind for several months now rather than finish up another color block quilt.... sigh...LOL

Well I worked on the Lone star quilt again. I starched as many suggested and have been super careful to not stretch anything. Then I pinned as suggested in a video I watched and have 1 diamond done that came out near-perfect. Wish me luck on the next 7 because this is for a mom to be and her water broke this morning 3 weeks early! lol

Okay - photos have been a challenge - not posting, but actually getting one that shows the quilt without too many wrinkles or corners cut off! Here is the finished top, made with a bunch of jelly rolls gifted by a QB friend as well as some filler fabrics from my stash. It finished up at about 64" x 80" and I'm quite pleased with it. I hadn't done this particular layout before (I don't even know what it's called) and I think this is only the second quilt I've set on point. :-)

Other things have kept me from my sewing table today but I have the leftover pieces of the jelly roll triangles picked apart and ready to be sewn into binding. As I thought, I will have to wait for a trip to the LQS to be able to finish this one as I don't have a decently sized piece of batting to use.

I'm waffling between tidying up from this project and starting to do some layout for the next I Spy quilt. Either way, there's a good chance nothing more will happen until tomorrow. Nice to see everyone else's progress!

toogie 01-15-2022 05:09 PM

I sandwiched a Lone Star today because I need to stay busy. I don’t want to quilt it right now though. Trying to think of something new to piece…

petthefabric 01-15-2022 06:00 PM

Today, gathered up all quilting stuff to show house. They liked it. By the time that was finished, we went to town for lunch and groceries. Now tired. Maybe tomorrow or Monday Holiday.

stitch678 01-15-2022 06:33 PM

I've been longarming my " travel " quilt, and it has been a challenge. So many colour changes and different textures due to appliques, ( a lot of unsewing , sigh). On the construction end of things, l'm designing/ sewing a QOV, impromptu style . I have a very limited supply of the fabrics, so l'm doing my best to stretch them to the max.

Just curious...any idea how you'll quilt it? I'm looking for ideas for mine.

jmoore 01-16-2022 04:02 AM

Iceblossom, I have been in the same predicament as you where I over cut or underestimated fabric for a project…hope your neutral is delivered timely.

Gemm, your string quilt is wonderful and colorful…I do like it set on point.

I did not get anything done in my sewing room yesterday…I discovered (via email) that I had some pre-course assignments for my upcoming Real Estate Associate Broker course which begins online this week. I spent 5 hours at the kitchen table reviewing Maine laws and regulations from my initial real estate class which I embarked on almost 2 years ago and taking several quizzes. But now I’m all set for Thursday’s class and can sew quilt free until then. 😜
