I use more fabric from WalMart than JoAnns and Hancock put together I have never pre-washed and there hasn't been one shrink usually the only thing wrong with their fabs is it got off centered on the wrap at the mill -my W/M has a much better assortment of Batiks and 1/2 the price of Js or Hs and a free Quilt of the month pattern and the fabs to make them in. I had to make a dress JoAnns had a sale 50% --$15yd reg =$7.50-- a glass of 7-up spilled on fab -sticky-washed it I lost 6in on the lgt and 2 1/2 on wd in the washer I did not put it in the dryer this was PRE-Shrunk but in my case it was RE-Shrunk and no satisfaction from JoAnns so now I only buy thread at Js

our local wal mart is also offering fat quarters exactly like the ones that Jo Ann stores offer at about 60 cents cheaper. The clerk told me the supplier is the same on Jo Ann uses. I found that interesting. Our store is also getting in some nicer and newer fabrics. Not the quality exactly as the LQS but not all that bad. At least it is a little more affordable......

Yep Wally world seems to be putting in a better grade of fabric. We never lost our department but they are upgrading it appears!

Now I want to start by saying I realize that Wal-Mart fabric is a different grade than LQS, but the prints they were bringing out were WONDERFUL! On top of that, they have "families" of fabrics just like my LQS has. So you didn't have to guess if it would coordinate or not. I just wanted to put this out there. If they indeed are going to have this moving forward (it's never been offered in my area before) I'm super excited. I love my LQS, but this would be a great alternative for doing quilts that when you're budget is tight, or you want more bang for your buck, etc. Did I mention the price on it was anywhere from 3.75 to 4.50 a yard? I didn't have time to pick any up yesterday, but plan on going after work today to get some just to try it out. That was less than five years ago and I am certainly hoping that the WalMart here soon restores that department. I called the manager and asked about it, but got the answer that they don't know year, but are hoping the fabric department is returned. But I haven't yet seen the addition of any of the 8,000 items that WalMart took off the shelves in hopes of attracting "up-scale" shoppers! Maybe it just takes a long time to correct huge mistakes. froggyintexas |
Some Walmarts that have FBY also have quilt of the month fabric & free patterns. I have been collecting these patterns for 13 years. They will repeat the patterns but with different fabric.

I would love to see fabric back in Walmart. We have Super Walmart stores here. |
Those are really nice looking fabrics. Our Walmart says NO WAY are we getting fabrics back. Guess that is the price I pay for living 1/2 mile from the beach. They would rather sell beach chairs, suntan lotion and airbrushed tee shirts.

Boy you or sure one lucky girl all the wal marts in Indiana has done way with any thing like that!
|
My LQS is so expensive, I do have some of their fabric. Wallmart has better fabric than Joanne's. I have noticed that fabrics made especially for Joannes is very thin and not a nice quality...I could not afford to keep up with LQS.
|
I am hoping that they bring it back to our Wal-Marts in Texas too!! They just took it out of most of them here in Texas. They are a few that still have it, but they are far and few of them that kept them.

Oh, I am so jealous! The local WalMart in my area discontinued their fabrics when they remodeled and turned in to a mini-superstore! And I just started quilting in January...after the price of cotton started to rise. My timing stinks!
Enjoy your wonderful find! |
One of our Walmart stores here in town still carries a full line of fabric...in fact I was there a couple weeks ago and they were clearing out some flannel...86 cents a yd. cant beat that....so i bought it all, lol.

Also if you look near the shelves where the fabric families are or sometimes they are on the cutting tables, they have patterns that are made from the fabric in the family! And the best part is the patterns are free, I've picked a couple up and they don't seem to be written too poorly and seem fairly easy!
|
Hope they bring fabrics back here. The closest Walmart to me only has pre-cut fabrics and they have gone up and aren't that great a quality. I'll have to keep checking the store.
|
I keep writing WalMart. I hope those of you that have "Creative Centers" instead of fabric are writing them also.

We have several WalMarts in our area and they only carry precuts. Got rid of all the cutting tables and bolts way back when they remodeled.

Is it my imagination or does it seem like the only WalMart's with fabrics are in rural areas where there aren't as many shopping opportunities? In my case, I live in a small tourist area and not many tourist buy fabric. The last time I heard the census count here, there were about 5,500 permanent residents. You would think we would qualify for a regular fabric department.
|
Ditto for me, except we have a huge, tv,computer, printers....deptartment on one side and on the other is paint. Ours is only an aisle, one side and the other with a small rack in the middle. I had not been there for almost a year, and so far have not seen any fabric coming in. DH said he noticed they were bringing back some items, but, I was not paying that much attention. The only change thus far to fabric, was putting up chains and clasps for jewlery

The quilts I've made have held up just fine.they are in constant use and washed often. No fading or fraying.

Oops! Just read the "Connecting Threads" post. At least at Wal Mart I can go by the "feel" of the fabric and I do love spending less for my "addiction of choice"
