So I ran to Wal-mart yesterday afternoon to pick up some work supplies. As I meandered through the store I saw they are remodeling a lot.
I went to to the back of the store and the entire craft / sewing area was being revamped and rearranged. Well as I looked they had a bunch of fabric on carts being brought out. Now I want to start by saying I realize that Wal-Mart fabric is a different grade than LQS, but the prints they were bringing out were WONDERFUL! On top of that, they have "families" of fabrics just like my LQS has. So you didn't have to guess if it would coordinate or not. I just wanted to put this out there. If they indeed are going to have this moving forward (it's never been offered in my area before) I'm super excited. I love my LQS, but this would be a great alternative for doing quilts that when you're budget is tight, or you want more bang for your buck, etc. Did I mention the price on it was anywhere from 3.75 to 4.50 a yard? I didn't have time to pick any up yesterday, but plan on going after work today to get some just to try it out. |
Would wash and dry before using to help prevent uneven shrinking. go for it!!
Yeah, my walmart is starting to get better fabrics also. Not as high quality as the LQS but definitely better than what I have seen there before.
I've read other posts where their fabric/crafts departments were expanding as well. I sure hope it comes to La Grande. Last time I was in there I saw a whole bunch of new fabrics on shelves with coordinating families. I hope they are still there on Friday.
Ours continues to get in those lovely "families" too. they are very hard to resist.

Ours here in Placerville sure has gotten new and better fabrics. They still aren't quite the quality of LQS - not quite as nice a hand, but when I'm paying $2.97 to 4.97 a yard, I don't feel so guilty about wasting fabric when I'm learning. I bought $25.00 worth of fabric in bright florals and stripes (all in a fabric family) brought them home, washed them in hot water and dried them in a hot dryer...trying to make sure that it could hold up. Not any more shrinkage than I'm getting from LQS fabs. I've been using them to practice blocks and teaching my nephew's wife to quilt. Still have lots of fabric to play with. Here are some shots of the florals...Suz took the stripes with her...

Great idea for practice, thanks for that idea!!

Hey Michael! This is a bit off topic but I got the Cheese & Crackers pattern after seeing yours!!! :D:D
I saw that at my bro's Wal-mart last month. I was kinda giddy because I hadn't seen fabric at a wal-mart for a while.
The selection and quality WAS better. AND they had more hip, current fabrics. Of course, there was some cheapy cringers there, but I've got two eyes, I can pick what I like! I really think this is a good thing for their PR. Treat customers with respect like you're HAPPY they're there, not "this is what you get, deal". |
When I walked into the local Wal-Mart the other day I saw a big wire bin of fabric on sale. My heart sank, I thought they were getting rid of the fabric section. So I walked back there and to my delight they were stocking the shelves with NEW fabric and fabric families!!! Yeah.
This is good news!
I think all of us who posted requests at WalMart's website comments section asking that they not take away the fabric sections should now send them a 'thank you' as well.
This is good news for me and I am excited to check it out at MY local Walmart! :-D
Life is good!
I so hope we get it back at our Wal Mart! I will definitely still shop at my LQSs but it was still fun to look through the fabric dept. when I got groceries. It will be nice to have access to patterns again and accessories. I have to go 50 miles to have access to patterns now. Also, when making charity quilts or experimenting with a new technique, you don't feel so made when it isn't $9+ a yard!

our local walmart has really amazing fabric now, when all the LQS went out of business in the area they really pumped up the quality and the stock to meet the need of the additional consumers now.
my opinion has changed on the quality of walmart fabric at least in my area - i have some fabric from Connecting Threads that is most loved on this forum and the quality from CT is extremely inferior to the quality i can get at my local walmart and at half the price. |
Yippee! We heard this might be happening, I'm thrilled to hear it.
Amen!! I am so glad to hear someone who doesn't say that LQS is always superior to Wal-Mart. I have gotten wonderful fabric at Wal-Mart and some not so great fabric at our highly respected LQS. There is good fabric everywhere. IMHO

My Wal-Mart didn't close its fabric dep but they down sized it to 2 small isles. What a mess fabric piled on top of each other can't see fabric stuffed every where, and next door the pet dep is huge big wide isles hope they down size that and give fabric more room. Wal-Marts isn't one of my favorie places but not much choice here unless you want to drive for miles.
I will have to check me Walmart - they just revamped the 3 in the area and got rid of all their fabric except for FQ - I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will bring fabric yardage back in at least one of them
Can you let us know what brands / manufacturers these new fabrics are made by? Thanks!

I've purchased a lot of fabric from WalMart. I have even seen the same fabric there that I saw at JoAnn's Fabrics for about 1/2 the price. Our WalMart never closed the fabric department but it did shrink. I have noticed they have been getting in more of a variety but have not expanded. It just seems more crowded. Oh well, the quality seems better and I just bought enough material to make an entire quilt. Washed and dried the material and it turned out pretty good.

This is great news! I'm going to check my stores today! And it would be just fine for wallhangings that don't get washed much or placemats that you want to change out alot! The LQS are dwindling here so this will help if I'm in a bind for a quick project too. Thanks for the update!

Believe it or not, we have three WalMart stores in our city. Only one of them sells fabric though. Guess I'll have to make a trip there to see if they have these new fabrics. I so miss fabrics in my WalMart. :(
I hope a Walmart near me starts carrying fabrics again. Have fun.
oh to visit wal mart . trouble is I live in england.big sigh , oh well .

Monday I was in Washington, NC and their Walmart had lovely fabrics. Of course, I indulged. Their offering was amazing with beautiful prints. Prices were $2.00 to $4.97 for quilting cottons. I bought a nice cotton beige/grey/white for backing at $1.50. They also had their monthly quilt pattern posted. The lady cutting said that they never stopped carrying fabrics. I certainly hope they get fabrics to the Elizabeth City, NC "wally" soon and that they are as gorgeous as the stock in Washington, NC.

Great news!
I see nothing wrong w/ wslmart fabric!Like everything you need to be SELECTIVE! I've seen stuff at LQS that I wouldn't buy. Walmart often have overuns or fabric that were overstock from a manufacture. The much prized FEEDSACKS from the 30's--how would they stand up to LQS standards?(they wouldn't) Feel it scrunch it inspect it for slubs or missprinting! Then buy it and make a quilt!I've gotten MANY wonderful fabrics from there-they held up great even after many washing(finished)-even w/o pre-washing!!
I was at our Walmart last night and bought some fabric for my 4th of July quilt. It is red/white/blue star fabric. It feels really nice and was only $2.96 a yard. All of their coordinating prints to this was the same price. Hancock Fabric has patriotic prints but theirs is quite as nice.
Does this pertain to the Super Walmarts also? We have a giant new one in Ellsworth, ME but so far their craft dept. is horrible and there are no fabrics at all.
I dropped $220 in WalMart the other day off the clearance tables. Mostly "tween" flavor prints for pillowcases and pj's. Also some licensed juvenile prints that had a good weight to them. I like the feel of the David Textile brand. I also bought some for a quilt for my Mom at the nursing home for $1 a yard in a soft lavender and black family, four prints. The nursing home launders stuff in the industrial machines, so I don't bother spending a lot on her bedding, but they usually last a couple of years anyway. I still love WalMart. Our LQS gets in some collections that have such a light hand to them that I wonder why they are still charging $10/yd. I think you have to look over everything, because you don't always get what you pay for, and bargains can be found in the least likely places.
When I started quilting I could not afford the best fabric. Walmart was my fabric store. I wouldn't have been a quilter if I could only buy the best of fabrics.
I have been in 2 different Wal-Marts this week, and to my delight they both have fabric now. One had pre-cut selections, fat quarters, jelly rolls etc only and the other was fabric on bolts, nothing was pre-cut.
i sure hope it comes back to my walmart all we have is precuts and the fat quarters are $2 as much as my lqs. so i dont shop at walmart anymore for fabric but if they brought back yardage i would definitly get it if it was nice stuff.
While looking on line for patriotic prints I found some (for 9.99) that was exactly the same as I had purchased at Wal-Mart for 4.44. Big difference. We are in Pahrump, NV right now and the WalMart has a nice fabric area. The LQS is mostly Japanese prints and does not have regular hours and never answered my email. We are going to spend the summer in Williams, AZ and there is a LQS there that I am hoping has some good sales.
Wow! Off to wally world tomorrow. We have one that has always had fabric and one that's new with only precuts. I hope one of them has the florals that you pictured. Love them!
