Hey everyone, how important is it to have a walking foot? I will need to order one for my machine. Will I also want a 1/4 inch seam foot? I would rather pay postage only once.

Crqltr 10-03-2011 05:51 PM

If you plan on doing any of your own quilting you really should have a walking foot. I use mine anytime I quilt, other than fmq.

Xstitshmom 10-03-2011 05:52 PM

yes -- to both! I use both of those feet alot!

AFQSinc 10-03-2011 05:52 PM

I would say the walking foot is essential. It makes putting on binding easier and if you want to match stripes. I like mine for straight line quilting.

I suppose you could get along without the 1/4 inch foot but then you'll have to be very careful about your piecing. I would get both if you can. I think you would find that it is just easier with the 1/4 foot.

Vivian Ketron 10-03-2011 05:59 PM

I would say get both. I use them both and love my 1/4" foot. I can't sew a very good 1/4" seam without it.

CarrieC 10-03-2011 05:59 PM

If you can afford both - get them both. I use my 1/4 foot for piecing (you should search on here about scant 1/4 inch seams - I changed my stitching to what I learned and WOW what a difference). Anyway - the walking foot is a great item too. I use it for other things, like seaming denim etc.

Sadiemae 10-03-2011 06:00 PM

I use a 1/4" foot all of the time, but I don't use a walking foot.

rushdoggie 10-03-2011 06:01 PM

I love my 1/4" foot! I wasn't sure I'd use it but I do all the time.

Monika 10-03-2011 06:04 PM

I use my 1/4" foot all the time. If you are going to do quilting you will need the walking foot. I agree with those that have said if you can afford both, get both.

feffertim 10-03-2011 06:08 PM

I use both of them all the time. Essential tools in my opinion.

hensandhollyhocks 10-03-2011 06:16 PM

I am really quite new to this and am very happy to have both!

Quilt Girl 10-03-2011 06:23 PM

you will need both of them. I use them all of the time - can't quilt without them...

SuziC 10-03-2011 06:30 PM

Can't live without mine!!!! Either one of them!

auntpiggylpn 10-03-2011 06:44 PM

I had never used one before and I saw a Fons and Porter show and they sang it's praises. I bought one about 3 months ago and I will not piece without one ever again! I was amazed at how nicely my fabrics and seams line up now!!

Love the quote.

Jennifer22206 10-03-2011 06:54 PM

I hate my walking foot. It broke apart and caused a lot of damage to my machine. I will never use it again.

Maia B 10-03-2011 07:07 PM

My Bernina walking foot has 1/4" markings. I don't know if other brands' walking feet do. For precise piecing or strips 6" or longer, I either use a machine with built-in dual feed (a Pfaff, my Baby Lock Quest Plus, or my 820) or I use a Bernina with walking foot. It pops on and off, no screws, works beautifully.

yayaquilts 10-03-2011 07:08 PM

Yes both!! Love my 1/4" foot.

valsma 10-03-2011 07:10 PM

I like my walking feet on the machines I have. I don't free motion so the walking comes in handy. As for the 1/4 foot, love it! I have found my seams are straighter and more accurate with it.

3incollege 10-03-2011 07:12 PM

Love my walking foot, I use it to put on my bindings. Get both!

T. 10-03-2011 07:19 PM

I have a 1/4" foot also, but it's just a hassle taking my walking foot off; so I have figured out where the 1/4" is on the walking foot, now I use it for EVERYthing.
Why can't they just make the regularly feet with "teeth" on the bottom so they can grab the materials too? (I'm too simple-minded :))

I got the 1/4 inch foot with my Bernina, and bought the walking foot, and don't know how I survived without both of them. You will never be sorry about either purchase. I can't afford LAQ, so the walking foot was a good investment, since I do all my own quilting, mostly SID or just outside the seam line, is that called shadow quilting? Anyway, go for it,

Dolphyngyrl 10-03-2011 07:57 PM

They are really good for table runners, pot holders, SITD quilting, cross hatching, making bags. very handy, couldn't live without mine

hobbykat1955 10-04-2011 02:41 AM

Must have's...yes

gollytwo 10-04-2011 02:45 AM

A 1/4" foot is on my machines as the everyday foot.
I don't machine quilt often, but when I do I always use the walking foot. Didn't once and the results were not good.

mummadee 10-04-2011 03:11 AM

Both are invaluable. If you only purchase 2 machine items, these are the 2.

Grammie Sharon 10-04-2011 03:15 AM

I would get both if you can. You'll see the difference right away with the 1/4 foot.

It'sJustMe 10-04-2011 03:17 AM

A walking foot is GREAT for garment sewing too. Hemming t-shirts has always been troublesome for me, but this time I used the walking foot and what a difference! No more hem ripples. Also great for pile fabrics and matching plaids. Just would say not to sew too fast.

Painiacs 10-04-2011 03:21 AM

Both! Both! BOTH!!'

tmg 10-04-2011 03:28 AM

I use both of mine all the time. The walking foot is a must. I am able to quilt my quilts on a LA but need my walking foot to put the binding on. I love love love my 1/4" seam foot. I can't say enough good things about it.

butter 10-04-2011 03:32 AM

I too agree with everyones comments. I use both all the time. I have three Berninas and each has a 1/4" foot. The one I travel with does not have a walking foot but I always make sure I have taken the walking foot from another before I leave. Using the correct food really does make a difference in the finished project. Just keep chocolate nearby and you will be set to stitch!

Plumtree 10-04-2011 03:34 AM

I use them both all the time. If one is off the other is most likely on. If you can afford them both I would definately buy them.

mama lyn 10-04-2011 03:40 AM

If you can swing both it will make your quilting so much easier and a lot less ripping out!

franc36 10-04-2011 03:50 AM

I'd definitely order both the walking foot and the 1/4 inch seam foot. You'll find they are well worth the money. I would not enjoy quilting nearly as much without both of those feet. I also often use them for my general sewing (e.g., the 1/4" foot for sewing doll clothes and the walking foot for matching plaids, sewing velvet, etc.).

mshollysd 10-04-2011 03:54 AM

I always use a walking foot for putting on the binding. It is imperative for me to have both sides of the fabric move together so I don't get any stretching. BTW, I love putting on binding with it. I did invest in a 1/4 inch foot and love it, however I am still working on trying to find that area that is a scant 1/4. So if you are in the market for both, they won't sit in the corner when you are sewing, you will probably use them a lot.

vicki reno 10-04-2011 03:58 AM

I use my WF for quilting, but it is essential when attaching the binding. Without that foot, my binding does not feed under the presser foot right and ends up looking terrible.

romanojg 10-04-2011 03:59 AM

You do need both feet to make life easier on you. Some of the machines now have an interchangeable walking foot where it also has other feet to go on it. Make sure you get the walking foot made for your machine; not all of them last as long or do as good of a job even though they say they are universal.

JanetP 10-04-2011 04:29 AM

I use my walking feet for everything - more than my regular presser feet. I have several walking (Acufeed) feet for my Janome and use them 1/4" foot is great -- just remember to change your needle setting to get an accurate 1/4".

mucky 10-04-2011 04:43 AM

If you are doing any machine quilting get the walking foot.

lfletcher 10-04-2011 04:48 AM

Yes to both. They are the only 2 feet that I use on my Janome 6500.
