We are in a rental home and my sewing room is a dark blue (hate it and can't change it). It is depressing to me. If you have a "happy" color then use it. My last sewing room I painted a soft yellow and absolutely loved it. It was cheery and warm.

I agree it has more to do with personal preferance than anything else, that being said be careful, I made my design wall out of a lavender flannel. I started making quilts to match, had to change it to white.

The color of your lighting will have a bigger impact on seeing the "true" color of your fabrics than the wall color will.
I have the same lighting in two different rooms, and the color is different. I took some batiks that were clearly navy blue into my sewing room...took them into another room to look at the wall color with the batik and it looked black. Maybe it's because the two wall colors were so different, but that's just my experience.
I use as much daylight as possible...
My walls are china white, to get the most amount of light in my sewing room. In fact all the walls in my house are white and covered with a collection of hanging quilts in the brightest wildest colors possible!
Oranges and yellows tiger lillies, Red and white Sunbonnet Sue, Red and blue dragonfly, Purple Texas Star. Mixed all Kaufe Faucett reds blues all colors, that shouts glee! a many colored primary colors bargello wall hanging!
...and I can change it all in a few minutes!
That is right, the color of your walls will reflect onto the fabric, at least just a little. That is Ok, though, because everybody has a color family they like.
It is interesting to read that so many of the quilters who answered here have painted their walls Yellow! - my favorite color family!
Thinking - y'all have sunny personalities? YAY!

I chose my favorite color, pink. It's called Cinderella and I love it. Choose a color that makes you happy. I feel welcome when I walk into my sewing room.

I like a silver sage - the color Restoration Hardware has in their store. They also sell it. Very soothing.

I like vanilla wafer from Olympic. A neutral pale yellow.

I had my room painted a very pale violet, I think any pale color would soften the room and make it more relaxing.

I used vanilla ice cream paint, so that I could still match colors, and I can decorate with whatever I want. I had southwest in there until recently, now I am going to decorate with nothing but quilts. Good luck!

He he I guess I am the odd one here. I love ladybugs so when I turned one of my bedrooms into a sewing/craft room I painted it red/black with a ladybug strip going around the room. The color doesn't seem to bother me any - I have good light right under my cutting table and next to my sewing area.
