You could gauge interest here, and hold a coop. Like, figure out how many "sets" could be made from the bolts, then offer it to the first X members, and they pay you up front. You order, and redistribute. I dunno if that would work...but it seems like it would!

i started buying qom from walmart when i started working in fabric dept. did not anything about fabric. really learned alot after a few weeks of handling material. went on to be dept. manager and always tried to keep qom on shelves. our store in canton, ga. still has fabric but remodel is 2011 and fabric will be gone. i probably have 50 qom in tubs. i retired in march so i am trying to quilt some everyday! oh! i am a great grandmother for first time i love him!!!!!

The fabric dept manager at this store is a quilter! I think that makes a big difference in how profitable the fabric sales are. Most of the craft/fabric managers have no interest, just doing a job.

When fabric manufacturers test colors, pattern etc. and it is not perfect, they may sell it to other stores like WalMart and Joanns. They may use the same quality fabric as their first quality, but very often do not. So eventhough the print may be the same, it may not be the quality fabric you anticipate. That's not to say it's going to be terrible, just not first quality.

teddee2 05-13-2010 05:46 AM

I know that Walmart's prices are usually very good - however, if we truly care about each other, and most quilters do, it is important to keep in mind that Walmart does not treat their help as they should and are not unionized and do help lead to the downfall of many other small stores

Pam, By any chance, are you any where near Mt. Carmel?
Are there any two or four lane roads running to there? I may be up that way later this summer and would like to know. Thank you. Sherry McD

I'm not positive but I think generally 10 - 15 yards...
Good Luck,

There is approx/ 15 yards on a bolt.Jolo

Most of the craft/fabric managers have no interest, just doing a job.
----------------------------------
And so are the clerks there, just doing a job with no interest in actually
being a "sales" clerk.

I bought most of two pieces of fabric that I'd had good results with
before, two yards of each. One had lots of material left, but after asking
for two yards, I was surprised to see her cutting off what must have been
only a quarter yard. And she casually rewrapped it and tossed it into the
return bin. If I had been faster, or she smarter, I would have taken that
extra bit of fabric, and I'm shocked she had not been trained to ask before
cutting off that extra bit.

wvdek 05-13-2010 06:22 AM

That fabric is beautiful. Going an hour and a half away to a WM this weekend so will check out the QOM.

We were taught that for every two folds on a bolt it equaled one yard. Each manufacturer had their own amount they placed on the bolts. It could be from 10 - 15 yds depending.

Boston1949 05-13-2010 06:39 AM

Those fabrics are just lovely! Gonna have to check out my local Walmart as well. Why are there so few fabrics shop around any more? I'm in southeastern Mass. and have only Joanns to buy fabric from, besides Walmart. There was a great store called The Fabric Place but they closed. It was a really nice store, always many customers no matter when you went there. Still looking forward to a trip to Keepsake Quilting in Meredith, NH., but have a feeling that they'll be pricey. Thanks for sharing :)

Joan, I shop at the Wal-Mart in Canton also but was not aware of the remodel in 2011. Thanks for the tip...I'll have to make sure that I have stocked up before that happens. Please PM me if you hear any other news about this store. Thanks!

Carsey 05-13-2010 07:25 AM

The Walmarts here in Tallahassee are all doing away with their fabric dept. When they remodel....poof....it's gone!!!! The fabric manager told me to have everyone call 1-800-walmart and tell them to keep or bring back the fabric (if taken out) back in the stores. I call all of the time, but my calls alone can't make a difference. Maybe if we all called, they might listen to us.

Carsey 05-13-2010 07:29 AM

Call, call, call. Let our voices be heard. Call Walmart 1-800-walmart and "demand, beg, plead" to have our fabrics in their stores. The more calls the better

I have yards of quilt shop fabric, from Cherrywood to Ricky Tims hand dyed, so I know quality. I am very pleased with this David Textile fabric I found at WalMart.

Which town do you shop in that has this fabric. I am in North Little Rock, but am at other places around Arkansas occasionally. There are no Walmarts in NLR that still sell fabric. There is one Walmart left in Little Rock that does, but not much of it. It will be gone by the end of 2010.

this is certainly not true of the ladies who work the fabric dept of our local walmart. they're friendly, helpful, and are always happy to see their customers. AND they remember the regulars. when there's a bit left over, they always ask if i want it before they cut.

Susie42quilter 05-13-2010 01:22 PM

The WM in our area closed their fabric dept. We did not have a fabric shop locally so we had to travel 40 t0 90, miles or order on line to get supplies.
We called WM, e-mailed WM, wrote WM in our local area and headquarters all
to no avail. They were the only fabric store we had for 5, years, guess we hand quilters just don't quilt fast enough for them. Our machine quilters need to quilt faster also.
So, Thanks to JoAnn we now have a fabric/craft store in our area.

JoAnnGC 05-13-2010 01:26 PM

For anyone who is interested in doing so, you may contact Walmart corporate HQ through wallmart.com. This is what I sent them today:

I am a member a very large international group of quilters who have a discussion forum on Quiltingboard.com and am writing to express our collective extreme disappointment that so many Walmart stores have discontinued their fabric departments and that there are plans to do the same in many other, if not all, Walmarts throughout the United States. For as long as I can remember Walmart has been the go-to location for affordable fabric and sewing notions, not only for quilters but also for those who sew clothing, crafts and home decor items. Despite the resurgent popularity of quilting and home sewing Walmart has chosen to turn its corporate back on those of us who have patronized your stores for so many years. We want you to reconsider this unfortunate decision and bring back this offering. We are compiling a list of Walmart stores that still sell fabric so that we can post this on our quilting board's website as a reference for our members. I would greatly appreciate it if you would email that information to me. Thank you very much. I look forward to your response.

I will be very surprised if I get a respons from them but will definitely post it if I do.

Jeanniejo 05-13-2010 01:28 PM

I just got the newest Walmart quilt of the month. I's called 'Memories' . I just loved the fabrics! I do like doing most of them if I like toe colors and feel of the fabric. I made 2 tops at my last retreat that were quilts of the month and had lots of complements on them. My fellow quilters didn't believe they were from Walmart !

I would imagine that Walmart's decision to discontinue fabric is financial, just like with the local quilt shops. But they have clothing, automotive, etc. to fall back to bolster their profits, so they stay in business. They didn't get to be the retail monster they are without keeping a close eye on the bottom line. Be interested to know what they say!

I was in Wal-Mart in Richlands,Va Monday and found the same fabric BellaBoo has and i got it for $1.00per yard i was so happy i must have spent over a hour looking at fabric i brought 18 yards and they had plenty more left.I also got all of the Fall colors"Homespum"for one dollar a yard.I'm doing the happy dance (:)

I have the quilt in mind I'm using fabric for.

It will be a quilt to be used for the porch swing. Simple and certainly no heirloom.

ami posting in the wrong place,or doing something wrong ?i've posted several times on different topics &have never had a responce of any kind.

I have bought alot of material from walmart. No realizing it was the quilt of the month material. I liked the material. That picture that is shown of the material I have bought some of it for another quilt. I have not seen the free quilt patterns. I guess I need to pay more attention, but when I get around material I just forget everything else. Ha Ha.

bkb 05-13-2010 07:23 PM

Jeanniejoe I bought the "Memories" line too. But I am also making another quilt from the same pattern. enlarged the pattern to 12" blocks and am changing the border. All of the material marked down to $1 I just closed my eyes and felt each one, good feel went in the cart. Yes I spent a whole wad of money(IMHO). when I got home got out some fabric from LQS, shut eyes again and there was very little difference in the feel. Now that I have been working with it is as good as LQS

texas granny 05-13-2010 07:31 PM

That when you write to Bentonville and tell hhem whats going on. That could be the reason some of the stores have fabric some not.

kso 05-13-2010 09:13 PM

Douglas, AZ Wmart is closing its fabric department and is having a 75% off sale. (just in case anyone lives close by)

brookemarie19 05-14-2010 04:00 AM

That is such a win lose situation kso..
You hate to see the fabric department closing, but you just gotta love those prices and buy a ton

This is the response I got this morning from Walmart:

Thank you for your message.

Dear JoAnn,

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the fabric department in your local store. As with any merchandise decision that we make, we have based our decision to reduce the stitching and fabric departments on customer demand, which does not appear to be as high today for a full stitching and fabric offering in some markets as it may have been at Walmart in the past.

In keeping with our emphasis on being a store of the community, Walmart is converting the fabrics and crafts department in some stores to a newly expanded assortment of merchandise that focuses on life's celebrations. We are thrilled to offer our customers this exciting new crafts and celebrations center that makes available craft and party planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations, such as holidays, weddings and birthdays.

In those stores where the new crafts and celebrations center is placed, merchandise commonly referred to as 'notions' will be included in the product offerings - such as sewing machines, yarn, needles, thread, etc. As a part of this conversion, most of our new and remodeled stores that opened earlier this year, as well as a small number of existing stores, will feature the new crafts and celebrations center in place of bolt fabrics. Walmart will continue to carry cut fabric in most of our stores. Due to the continued evaluation of our stores, we are unable to share a list of existing stores scheduled to receive the new crafts and celebrations center at this time.

Sincerely,
Walmart Customer Care

The demand for cigarettes has reduced dramatically in every market and Walmart hasn't quit selling those. So don't give us that low market demand crock Walmart, tell us the truth. Fabric sales give WalMart not the upscale image they think they have.

zz-pd 05-14-2010 08:05 AM

I don't have a wall mart. there gone to open one the end of this year. we will see if they carry fabric. God bless. Penny
