Well, if we keep on commenting and writing to them, it MIGHT make a difference.

The "celebrations" department does NOTHING for me.

On the other hand, I will probably save money because all the "other" local sources of fabric are quite a bit further away.

And at this stage of our lives, most of the other WalMart merchandise is "optional"
so I will boycott them as much as possible.

mmbms 05-14-2010 08:32 AM

My closest Walmart no longer carries any fabric at all (since they remodeled) I'm sorry to say. They did carry some nice fabric. There's another Walmart maybe 20 or so miles from me .... I'll have to check to see if they have the Fabric of the Month quilt kits ..... I've never known that Walmarts carry that!! Good to know.

twistedsheets 05-14-2010 10:15 AM

My boyfriend took me to Walmart recently cause I was so down in the dumps ,as my Mom just passed away May 2. He bought me a pair of new gym shoes and we found almost 11 yards of quality quilting fabric for $1 a yard. Which I was happy to receive, my grandchildren will get the quilts I was making for my mom, and the material will help set off the design, I just need to kick myself in the butt, as her death has really depressed me from doing much of anything, she was my life!! And I took care of her 24/7

martha jo 05-14-2010 10:40 AM

We should unit and notify Wal Mart and do it that we will no longer shop their store for anything until they return the fabric.

theresse 05-14-2010 11:10 AM

Unfortunately I can't do that, thow I wished I could. about half of the can goods are about 20% less than the other stores in town.I buy most thing At Smith's grocery store. I would if I could.

sabcoke 05-14-2010 01:08 PM

I love the picture of the quilt. Do you have a pattern for it or sizes of stips and blocks? I realloy would like to know.

sabcoke 05-14-2010 01:11 PM

The last time I went to walmart I asked them why some of the walmart stores were closing their fabric lines and some not. The response I got was because someone has to stay in the fabric section at all times and they want all their employers to be able to go everywhere. So in turn it is financial as they would pay that particular person to stay in one area instead of being versitile.

D'Marie 05-14-2010 01:13 PM

If your Wal-Mart is remodeling then look for the fabric department to soon disappear. That is what they told me at our Wal-Mart Store. They start cutting back and then they get down to just what is in stock and when that is gone, then there will be no more fabric. They want all the stores to carry the same things and sense some have already closed their fabric dept. the rest will follow, in due time.Sad thing is who ever is managing al-Mart doesn't realise that the women in small towns are not going to be happy, after Wal-Mart moved in and ran off our dry good stores that handled the fabrics and such. Wal-Marts is really a killer for small towns.hey move in and cause all the dime stores, clothing stores, shoe stores and the om & pop stores to close Then they start cutting back on what they want to sell. The quality of our local Wal-Mart is not near as nice as it used to be.Clothing for large ladies has gone to 100% cotton and after a few washings, it's not fit to wear. I complained to te store and tey simply act like they don't care.So it's drive to the bigger cities,or do without.

What?? WalMart thinks they have an upscale image?

D'Marie 05-14-2010 01:32 PM

JoAnn,I too have been in touch with Wal-Marts main offices. All you ever get is run around about customer demand is down. Alot of the problems, to do with customer demand, is Wal-Mart has cut their quality of fabrics.Plus some of the ones in control are strictly city people and they don't realise just how many women do still sew.Besides most of these decisions are made by men.The young ones have changed so much since Sam Walton died and it hasn't been for the best.Sam was a country man and understood what country people wanted. That is why he refused to buy so much forgein imports. Most of the Wal-Mart stores are hurting and that's because they got to involved with the Sam type stores. They fail to realise these are 2 differant type store and shouls be ran differantly.

CarrieAnne 05-14-2010 01:42 PM

Yeah, Boyfriend has to return something to Walmart, so I am going to ride along and check out the fabric dept!

luv-e 05-14-2010 01:43 PM

I went to "W" that is 1/2hr from me and they are doing a huge remodel. The craft Dept. HAS MATERIAL!!!! fqts $1.oo ea. Cranston 1Yd is $6.00!! They are in 1yd. lengths. There are alot of pkg. deals. Purses $12.00 Fat 1/8 and 1/4 bundles are $10.00 and up. and so on. They aren't finished with the Dept. yet OH!! 108 wide muslin 3yds pkg is $16.00 Better deals @ JoAnn's but might be good if in a pinch.{JoAnn's is 1hr. away]

jolo 05-14-2010 03:22 PM

Since Sam Wal. died and his family took over they dont care that thier Dad wanted to focus on the rural and senior citizens. The quality is down and definetly the customer service has gone almost completely. They will slowly lose all their following. We will go else where. Jolo

thanks Granna...i went to the site but didn't understand it..can you buy from there? I have to go to my WM tomorrow and find out about this....I had no idea they had a monthly pattern and special fabrics...they certainly don't advertise it....thanks again ....SG

JoAnnGC 05-14-2010 05:13 PM

Just got back from WM...BOM May fabrics (A E Nathan) were $2.47/yd. At that price I couldn't resist. They are very pretty soft pastels that I will be able to use for a baby girl quilt for my niece who is expecting in June. The clerk in the fabric department said that they will have fabric until 2011 when they remodel the store and said that she thinks they will still carry fabric in the future because they sell a lot from this particular store in Canton, GA. She also said that everyone must call or write to voice their opinions if they want to make a difference.

FroggyinTexas 05-14-2010 05:29 PM

It did at our Walmart in Sherman, Texas, also, but when the store was remodeled the fabric went out the door. Many other things of particular interest to women also went out the door, although management will tell you the new "party " department is designed to appeal to women.

I much preferred the fabric.

swimer girl 05-14-2010 06:05 PM

Hi everyone.....I too want WM to keep their fabric department in every store.....so I too wrote a letter and tomorrow I will also call. Here is my letter:

I am writng on behalf of the hundreds of women who sew all types of items eg: quilts, clothes and or home decor items. We are all across this great country of ours.We ask that you continue to have a fabric department in all of your stores including your new ones.
We have relied on WM for all of our sewing needs for many years. Our economy has forced many fabric stores to close but we could always rely on WM to be there for us. So please reconsider your plans and keep your fabric and related items department in your stores....Thanking you in advance....Sincerely, Rona J Flaherty, Naples florida

I hope many of you will write and that this helps....hugs SG

craftybear 05-16-2010 04:36 PM

When they remodel our Walmart in Indiana, they did away with the fabric department as they said not making $ and they made the electronic department bigger, we don't shop much now at Walmart

Lynn Luker 05-16-2010 04:57 PM

I live in Las Vegas. The nearby Walmart is now undergoing the big remodel and the fabrics are going away. The manager of the department told me that another Walmart in town would still carry the fabrics. She didn't know which one, so I'll have to search them out I guess. I haven't ever seen the BOM at my local Walmarts. It is very frustrating. I really dislike having to pay $9 and up at the LQS.....

You are sooo lucky to have a store to have a shop like Nancy's Quilt shop in the area! I visited there when we were in the area several years ago - it's fantatic. I'd LOVE to have a shop like that near me!!

BellaBoo..that top fabric is possibly the one I am missing from Memories...only it looks more tourquoisey than the sage green of Memories but I'm sure it's the same pattern.
I I pm'd you..but perhaps I should put it out to this group to see if anyone does have extra of that one fabric....thank you for your help...hugs SG

I am a member a very large international group of quilters who have a discussion forum on Quiltingboard.com and am writing to express our collective extreme disappointment that so many Walmart stores have discontinued their fabric departments and that there are plans to do the same in many other, if not all, Walmarts throughout the United States. For as long as I can remember Walmart has been the go-to location for affordable fabric and sewing notions, not only for quilters but also for those who sew clothing, crafts and home decor items. Despite the resurgent popularity of quilting and home sewing Walmart has chosen to turn its corporate back on those of us who have patronized your stores for so many years. We want you to reconsider this unfortunate decision and bring back this offering. We are compiling a list of Walmart stores that still sell fabric so that we can post this on our quilting board's website as a reference for our members. I would greatly appreciate it if you would email that information to me. Thank you very much. I look forward to your response.

I will be very surprised if I get a respons from them but will definitely post it if I do.

This is the response I got this morning from Walmart:

Thank you for your message.

Dear JoAnn,

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the fabric department in your local store. As with any merchandise decision that we make, we have based our decision to reduce the stitching and fabric departments on customer demand, which does not appear to be as high today for a full stitching and fabric offering in some markets as it may have been at Walmart in the past.

In keeping with our emphasis on being a store of the community, Walmart is converting the fabrics and crafts department in some stores to a newly expanded assortment of merchandise that focuses on life's celebrations. We are thrilled to offer our customers this exciting new crafts and celebrations center that makes available craft and party planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations, such as holidays, weddings and birthdays.

In those stores where the new crafts and celebrations center is placed, merchandise commonly referred to as 'notions' will be included in the product offerings - such as sewing machines, yarn, needles, thread, etc. As a part of this conversion, most of our new and remodeled stores that opened earlier this year, as well as a small number of existing stores, will feature the new crafts and celebrations center in place of bolt fabrics. Walmart will continue to carry cut fabric in most of our stores. Due to the continued evaluation of our stores, we are unable to share a list of existing stores scheduled to receive the new crafts and celebrations center at this time.

Sincerely,
Walmart Customer Care

I also wrote and got the same reply....possibly a form letter??? Here in Naples Fl we have 2 WM's with great fabric dept. I just found out about the BoM from WM thru this thread and only one of the stores carries it. I bought all but one fabric for the Memories...It is beautiful materials in wonderful patterns....i pd $2.97 a yard. I'm hoping someone has extra of DT-9336CW-2 (Fabric B)....I pm'd BellaBoo to thank her for giving us this info and to see if she possibly had that fabric. The lady at one of the WM's said the letters to WM had kept their fabric dept open....hugs to all of you SG

FroggyinTexas 05-25-2010 11:53 AM

I just spoke to someone at A.E. Nathan in New York. He assured me that "not all WalMarts are doing away with their fabric." I read him the reply that we have all received from WalMart and he wanted to know who signed it. Apparently he thought because I have a pronounced Texas accent that I am illiterate.
I asked him whether there would be other outlets for A.E. Nathan fabrics and the block of the month. He said all they need is WalMart. I asked him if A.E. Nathan will go out of business when WalMart takes all the fabric out of all the stores and he said, "We haven't got that far." He also said that Nathan has order for BOM through 2010, but does not have a list of stores that will carry it. "You will have to get the list for yourself," he said. So much for customer service!

BellaBoo 05-25-2010 12:18 PM

Looks like all he has is a contract for six more months of Walmart. And what did Walmart do with all the fabric taken out of the stores? It was whisked away by truck. It wasn't taken to the other stores that still sell fabric, that isn't done.

When Hancock's Fabrics closed the store here, the store has lots of bolts of fabric not sold. I asked what was going to happen to the left over fabric. The rep Hancock sent down to oversee the closing of the store said it would be taken to the dump. Everyone was shocked to hear that. We all said WHY? Why not donate it?
She said it would be doused with a heavy oil so the fabric could not be salvageable. She said that's Hancock's policy. That's the way it's done. And she agreed it was such waste. I haven't bought anything from a Hancock's Fabric store since. FYI: Hancock's of Paducah is not Hancock's Fabrics

CarrieAnne 05-25-2010 12:53 PM

I always hate to hear about something like that! What a waste. For goodness sakes, they could at least donate it, and receive a tax break!

brandon 05-30-2010 05:30 PM

I would like to say that if your walmart store carries fabric you
are very lucky indeed. I really enjoyed shopping there. I have
purchased some poor quality fabric and would like to see sewing
section in our walmart again
Thanks for the info.

Today I went to Walmart.com and wrote that I want our local store to carry fabric again. There is a rumor that fabrics are being put back in this store. The tacky, cheap looking party supply dept. they put in the fabric dept. space doesn't seem to be doing very well. I have heard customers say they can get their party supplies at the dollar store cheaper. Thanks for telling me where to complain.

I posted a new thread about the August QOM, and in it is a link to the site that sells the material and FREE downloadable patterns for all the Walmart QOM's! Nice!

They go all the way back to 08! Here's the link, just click on which one you like and it will give you the "PDF" link:
