We are getting a new superstore and they don't want to move stuff so I've gotten some great deals on fabric. Beautiful flannel for $1.50/yd, courduroy for $1.50/yd, $2 for charm squares, etc. Yes! I love a great deal!

grannypat7925 07-20-2011 07:19 AM

I so hope our Walmarts will put the fabric departments back in. One of them has some fabric but not much. We miss that department sooooo much!

Jeanne Egeland 07-20-2011 07:37 AM

I was at our local WalMart yesterday. They had material for $1.50 you had to look at it carefully to make sure it was not thin. Some was pretty good and some was not so good. They had stacks of material in carts that had not been priced yet. Needless to say, I will be going back.

isewman 07-20-2011 07:41 AM

This is from Don-isewman. I'm not sure if all of the complaining made a problem for Wal-Mart or not. Our Wal-Mart here in Muscatine, is BRINGING BACK BOLTS of material. There not selling the material yet. There only 1/2 full. When they do, I'll be checking them out more, and more. Don-isewman

When Walmart took out their fabric dept here, a few months later one fabric shop and one quilt shop opened. Both shops knew they had it made, only sewing stores for miles around. In less then two years both filed bankruptcy and closed. It's not always the fact that a big box store drives small business out. Look at the mini malls next to a big Walmart, they love the traffic Walmart brings. A Walmart moves, the stores around it lose business.

This store still says they are not getting the bolts back but they are reducing the price of the fabric.
The price was worth walking back twice to get more fabric.

Our Wal Mart is bringing fabric back, but what I looked at was not a good grade of fabric, felt like muslin, and lots and lots stiffener in it. I can't imagine what will happen to it when it is washed. I bought some of their packaged fabric ONCE because I needed a certain color for lining for a tote bag. That stuff is just horrible, no more fabric from Wal Mart for me.

We have 2 stores in Edmond and one in Guthrie... I haven't seen any evidence of either getting them back
One of the stores in Edmond is the "original" store Guthrie was made into a super center and the store on I35/15th is "new". Would be nice to have more than just Hancocks and Hobby Lobby to chose "affordable" fabric from.

I found that it depends on what the fabric manager orders... some managers don't know which end to thread the needle others are very knowledgeable about fabrics

bearisgray 07-20-2011 08:02 AM

Perhaps the problem is NOT the fabric (or whatever product) that happens to be in a particular store -

The problem may be that the BUYER did not choose a fabric (or whatever product) appropriate for the intended use.

If I buy cheesecloth for a backing because it was cheap, then it is inappropriate for me to complain that it isn't working out well or holding up.

Don't buy it if you don't think it is suitable for your uses.

jansquiltn 07-20-2011 08:23 AM

Fredericksburg VA has just started getting the fabric back in. Yeah!!!!!

moquilter 07-20-2011 09:07 AM

Walmart in Republic MO is bringing back bolts of fabric. A few are on the shelves, cutting table etc back as dept is reestablished.

bea cda 07-20-2011 09:09 AM

The fabric I have seen lately in Wal-Mart is not very good. The old adage "you get what you pay for" works very well in the fabric dept I visited recently. The only thing I hope for is a HUGE improvement in quality as new product is brought in. As a customer I have noticed that if the cost per yard is cheap, then the fabric is cheap. My time is valuable to me and I don't want to waste it.

quilter in the making 07-20-2011 09:43 AM

My local Walmart was one of the first to get rid of fabric, they have never stocked any of the precuts or kits and when I asked last weekend when grocery shopping there, they will NOT be stocking any fabric at all. Said it's not a money maker at that store and will not even consider stocking fabric. Now if I could just convince my husband to never shop there again I'd be happy. I don't like their policies towards employees or the way they've run local businesses into the ground anyway. JMHO.

Glenda m 07-20-2011 10:28 AM

The Walmant here is getting fabric back when they remodel. BUT..that is in TWO years. Said I would go back to work there when that happened. Guess they would take a 70 year young former fabric sales person. LOL

MargeD 07-20-2011 10:28 AM

Nice prices on fabric. I've asked two local Wal-Marts and neither one is bringing back fabric. One store, however, told me that the Super Wal-Marts never quit stocking fabric, but it's not very convenient for me. My SIL in SD said their local Wal-Mart never got rid of their fabric dept. I remember going there a few years ago when I was home for a family reunion and I brought back several yards of fabric I'd never seen in my local Wal-Mart. Guess it depends on who is buying the fabric. I sure wish they would bring it back.

mojo11 07-20-2011 10:50 AM

Glad to hear that. Am going to Tulsa this weekend. Thanks for the info, Enchanted Quilter

doxieloverred 07-20-2011 10:56 AM

The fabric I got for $1.50 was not the cheapy stuff they get in occasionally but the $5-6 stuff that they marked down so they didn't have to move it to the new store. This is name brand, quality flannel.

SUZAG 07-20-2011 11:07 AM

I noticed at our store a lot of the quilting supplies are going away but not reduced!

SUZAG 07-20-2011 11:12 AM

At our store, they tried those 5 yd bolts but the quality was really poor

Oh I hope they return the fabric department to all the Wal Mart stores! Our nearest Wal Mart, which is 20 miles away, got rid of their pre-cuts even. GRRR. I went in to puchase a couple more yards of one precut that I needed to finish a project with and they were all GONE! I am really up set about that.

We live 60 miles from a major city. Other Wal Marts around us are 40 miles away and neither of them carry fabric either. Makes me sick, especially with the gas prices.

Qwiltylady 07-20-2011 12:16 PM

those aren't the prices at my Walmart

ging10ging 07-20-2011 02:35 PM

I was at the Wal Mart I usually go to and asked when they are getting the fabric back and she told me they haven't given her the space yet so she figures about 5 mos but she won't have bolts. It'll be pre-cut fabric and that's it. So I guess it'll be a while yet and not yardage. So we'll see. Sue.

fyrefly 07-20-2011 06:04 PM

Redmadder, we are neighbors!! I sooo wish Kingsland WM brings back their fabric dept! SOOOON!

Ruby the Quilter 07-20-2011 08:53 PM

Hope we get bolts in the WalMarts here, but usually the price as better at JoAnns.

wanda lou 07-20-2011 09:31 PM

Maybe if you post the fabric you are missing with a picture someone will have it or their Walmart may carry it

cinnya 07-21-2011 04:49 PM

yes please post the fabric...I hit there clearance precuts here about 2 weeks ago and I might have some of what you need.
I can't even tell you all how much I bought.

CandyDaniel 07-21-2011 05:31 PM

Thank you for suggesting this, it was a purplish plum color in the 2 yards solid precuts. When I discovered they had done away with the precuts and there were no other Wal Marts at that time around, I torn out the project and went a different direction. Thank you though for any and all generous offers.

This does work!!!! We are getting a fabric department in one of our Jeff City stores - should be done by next week - I for one wrote and called and apparantly others did too. It was so funny - I was talking to one of the clerks who was working near the area that the fabric was going in and she said its all in the back but they have to finish setting it up. She told me that one lady came in and was soo happy she gave this clerk a hug. When I told her I was pleased to see it - she aked me not to hug her lol

redmadder 07-22-2011 03:37 AM

I picked up two FQs at Abingdon WM in Maryland just because they were on sale. Yesterday I tried to take the label off. It was so elaborate, foil and adhesive underneath. I had to wash in hot water to get all the bits off. The fabric turned out to be very shoddy. I know they paid more for the label than the fabric!

Great Grandma 07-22-2011 06:48 PM

saw today that our Wal-Mart has the sewing department back with fabrics and some patterns, etc. Still have some pre-packaged materials.

Jingle 07-22-2011 07:22 PM

The Wal Mart where I normally shop was making way for the return of fabrics today. I don't really have room for anymore but, that has not stopped me yet.

Are you talking about the Greensburg Walmart? The Delmont Walmart already has their fabric back but it might not be fully stocked yet.
