Psychomomquilter 09-10-2010 05:21 AM

This is the first time I have seen this petition; I signed it! so it needs to be put out again!

sew wishful 09-10-2010 05:32 AM

I hope that Walmart figures out that their sales are DOWN by taking fabric out. I for one have to drive 30 miles to WM for fabric. Next closest is 55 miles away. There is a LQS 8 miles and may resort to that or buying online if fabric is taken out of my WM. I have K-mart and Pamida for discount stores 8 - 10 miles from me so Walmart will lose my business when they lose the fabric. And 2 WM's 35 and 40 miles from me in the other direction have done away with it. Don't even go that way anymore.

Psychomomquilter 09-10-2010 05:37 AM

I go 1 1/2 hour drive if I want to get fabric, got another 45 minutes away, don't know what they are thinking, yes I do too. but its irritating to have to go that distance, and yes the fabric is going to be taken out of there too the end of the year. I just hate to pay such an outrageous price for fabric! and can get it cheaper at wal mart.

reginalovesfabric 09-10-2010 05:37 AM

I have even called Bentonville AK and voiced my opinion about closing the fabric depts in the two wal marts here in Hattiesburg and it didn't do any good. The bigger one of the two now has precut fabric and fat quarters but it's not the same.

Psychomomquilter 09-10-2010 05:42 AM

wish there was something we could do(hehehehehe, BOYCOTT/)I just miss it, Like someone said earlier, that was a way sewers ,quilters, and the other crafts got together and shared their stuff! Hey, I do know that one, cause I was fabrics&crafts manager for awhile!and I really enjoyed listening to the ladies talk about what they were doing.

lacikat 09-10-2010 05:50 AM

When our Walmart had fabric I was spending $50 - $100 a week on fabric and of course that would get me in the store to look at other merchandise. Now I rarely go into a Walmart. Actually it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see them go belly up like they have caused so many other stores to do. The one in my area is more expensive than Meijers.

Central Ohio Quilter 09-10-2010 06:23 AM

I rarely go to Wal Mart, but I did go into our local one last week for something I could not find any where else. I had heard that the fabric departments were gone in most of the stores, but went looking around the store to see if ours was gone or not. Lo and behold, there was still a fabric section! It was smaller than it had been years ago before they remodeled, but it was still there.

I browsed through the fabric and was pleasantly surprised at the fabric that was there. It was better quality than I was expecting. I found some fabric that "spoke" to me. I hunted, and hunted for someone to cut the fabric for me. I finally hunted someone down in the shoe department who called on the intercom that someone needs help in the fabric department.

This is where the "good" part comes in - A young boy, about 16 years old, came to cut my fabric. !!!!!!!!!   I told him that I needed 2 yards, and he actually looked like he knew what he was doing. He had been trained in how to measure and cut fabric.

But ........ when it came time to cut the fabric, he took a pair of scissors off a hook (these scissors clearly said on them "For FABRIC only!) and tried to cut the fabric. Those scissors would not even start to cut the fabric. They must have been extremely dull, dull, dull!!! He tried a different pair of scissors. They cut through the fabric, but the cut looked like he had chewed the fabric off with his teeth. I was wincing and grimacing the entire time he was cutting.

He noticed my expressions, and he asked my if he had done OK. I told him that pair of scissors had just chewed up the fabric so badly. I would have asked him to recut it, but I don't think there were any scissors that would have worked any better. So I just asked him if he could charge me for 1 1/2 yards of the fabric instead of 2 yards. He said - sure.

I came home and told my husband this story, and then reminded him "THIS IS WHY I TELL YOU NEVER TO USE MY SEWING SCISSORS FOR ANYTHING!!!"

They remodeled our Wally World and I hate it!! Tons of wasted space, no fabric department, lots of items no longer being carried. In some places the isles are so wide you could get a tractor trailer through them and then others, 2 people can not pass side by side in the same isle and it is a tight fit for 1 person.

I think Walmart is finding out that this decision of theirs was a really stupid one.

Roberta 09-10-2010 06:45 AM

Well I signed it again even if someone said it was an old petition. Perhaps if more sign it still, they will reconsider. Our local store still has fabric but it's the notions I buy there the most and those are getting few and far between so the fabric might be next.

mhansen6 09-10-2010 06:46 AM

I signed your petition, but I refuse to shop at Walmart. Even though they have the lowest prices around. Every shopping experience I have had there has left me frustrated and mad. The stores are dirty and the employees are less than top notch. I will shop anywhere except Walmart.
I hope for your sake they take the petition to heart, but they are not know for listening to their customers.

OmaForFour 09-10-2010 06:47 AM

My LQS gives 15 percent off just for telling her the name of the quilt guild a shopper belongs to. Her prices are a little over $9/yd now but this helps a lot. It is also on other things besides fabric. It is a small shop only in existence 1 1/2 yrs. She is very accommodating on anything I am trying to do. She also is very progressive in her ideas for the future of her shop.
Sometimes I do buy online if I can't get it in her shop or she can't get it for me (which is rare).
I have bought online when something was an extremely good buy, but generally I stick with my LQS and she truly appreciates her customers.

EagarBeez 09-10-2010 07:00 AM

I don't like how ours is laid out either, and they got rid of alot of items that I used to buy there. However they still do have a fabric dept, smaller then it used to be, but a fabric dept, just the same. They still have alot of customers in the fabric dept too. Last time I was there, they had a big bin full of fabric bolts, I think 5 yds and they were $5.00 per bolt. All sorts of different fabrics, and so crowded I barely got an elbow in there.
I did go into the fabrics and checked and they had some nice fabric.
I bought some, but, had to wait as there was only 1 woman cutting, and she seemed to be doing very well. The only problem was the wait, but, I did not mind, better then getting someone inept to measure.
I also signed the petition.
I did also notice that they got rid of the wedding stuff, it was not selling, and they have one row of scrapbook stuff, but, it is not single stuff it is in packets. Does not seem to be selling either.

TexasGurl 09-10-2010 07:01 AM

Our WM's here did away with their fabric dept a year or more ago when they remodeled. All they have now are a few fats (mostly ugly, that look like rejects from Joanns) & some precuts but few choices there
Some GOOD news - I've been told we're getting several Joann SUPERSTORES in the Houston area soon :)

mommy and pebbles 09-10-2010 07:02 AM

I signed it and it said accepted. Hope it helps it my only option as well.

Doris Sumnicht 09-10-2010 07:02 AM

I am surprised at the prices some of you have found at WM, as I co not recall any such lower markings when we had fabric in WM in Colorado. Have you noticed how difficult, sometimes, to find items we used to get in "dime stores" and "drug stores" or "variety stores." Cloth men's handkerchiefs, real tea/dish towel fabric, fine chochet cotton thread, basic lotions and creams, toilet soaps. No starch, except sizing kind in a spray can.

PEP 09-10-2010 07:09 AM

The Calcutta, Ohio, Wal*Mart now sells pre-cut fabric on small cardboard bolts. But it still is not the same as their original full-service fabric dept.

zoey 09-10-2010 07:56 AM

Walmart closed the fabric section of their store located where I live in Broken Arrow, OK last year and I was so disappointed. Guess they didn't want to have to pay someone to cut fabrics. Guess they also don't realize the other shopping customers do when they just stop in for one thing and come out with other unplanned purchases.

Quilting Nana 09-10-2010 08:01 AM

I signed it.
I work at a LQS and still buy at Walmart. But mine discontinued their fabric Dept.

grocifer 09-10-2010 08:21 AM

Darn -- Guess I signed the petition the first time around and it wouldn't accept me petitioning again!

fancifrock 09-10-2010 09:27 AM

Have already signed this once along time ago. They have already made up their minds to take away fabrics etc and there is no changing. Just like Joann's and the rest. They don't seem to care what the customers think. The bottom line is what makes the money for them and the bonus they get. Sad story for all of us.

I have said this many times!

Psychomomquilter 09-10-2010 10:22 AM

YES! :D about using sissors for other than cutting cloth!!

next time, if someone inexperienced comes to cut fabric, on the cutting table there is a groove, when the fabric is measured properly, they can start the cut while putting scissors in the grove, not cut but guide the scissors in the grove, and should have a clear cut piece of fabric.

Ilovemydogs 09-10-2010 10:26 AM

I shop a lot at walmart for fabric and misc things. I would love to shop at the LQS more, but I am glad I have that option of walmart, especially since we don't have joannes or hancocks (closest is 3 hrs away) I personally like the remodeling. It makes the store look a lot better and not so run down.

I too buy there. You just have to watch what kind of fabric you are buying. You go girl!!!!

newbiequilter 09-10-2010 11:04 AM

I am with you and for exactly the same reasons you stated. In today's economy, I have no problem shopping in a store where I can save money. I still shop at JoAnn's and my LQS.

PEG70 09-10-2010 11:16 AM

I HAD NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE EITHER, OR I SURE WOULD HAVE SIGNED IT. I REALLY BELIEVE IF SAM WAS STILL ALIVE THAT IT WOULD HAVE MATTERED WHAT THE PEOPLE WANTED AND THAT HE WOULD HAVE LEFT THE FABRIC CENTERS IN ALL OF HIS STORES, HE LOVED HIS CUSTOMERS ENOUGH TO WANT THEM TO BE HAPPY. AND THERE IS A LOT OF CUSTOMERS OUT THERE THAT SEWS AND QUILTS. PEGGY

Frankie 09-10-2010 12:16 PM

Walmart TELLS US what we want and we like sheep buy it,if by chance we decide we want something else our requests fall on deaf ears. How many names have been added to the list of "please bring back the fabric department' but they decided that scrapbooking is what we need to be doing instead of sewing. How disappointing. Do they care, me thinks not!

angelarose 09-10-2010 12:31 PM

The few quilts I've made have been from fabric I chose at LQS and Ben Franklin, and other fabric store. I check on the texture of the fabric from B.F. and follow advice given about choosing: tightly woven but not stiff and heavy with dyes, and when crushed with my hand it doesn't wrinkle much.
There are 2 WMs in Harrisonburg. One eliminated fabric dept., the other minimized it...did away with the batting! Now tell me what moron made that choice!!!! A salesperson there told me space was eliminated from the dept. to give to electronics, next door. Electronics brings in more $. But, now fabric dept. has brought back the batting!!!! Well, that's a positive sign that someone is listening. Amen.

quiltsru 09-10-2010 12:37 PM

I certainly am not to good to buy my fabrics at WM and I have gotten many good deals.

I signed the petition....used to shop at Pace, FL Walmart..fabric dept was closed this summer...will shop elsewhere..
Still shop at the Murphy, NC WalMart...we are here for the summer months and the Murphy fabric dept is still stocked.

missbelle 09-10-2010 01:26 PM

YOU ARE LUCKY - SEVERAL PETITIONS HAVE BEEN
SIGNEDAND SENT

ewesful 09-10-2010 01:40 PM

The W Lebanon NH store did lose their fabrics but the Claremont one did not due to letters and phone calls to headquarters - our nearest store was about 30 miles away - don't know exactly what made the difference - but we are glad.

BIG DITTO

davis2se 09-10-2010 03:18 PM

My local WalMart stores closed their fabric sections all within the past year. I live in an area however (Sarasota/Bradeton) where there are several Hancocks and JoAnnes, as well as about 5 LQS shops within easy, easy driving distance. Truly, I don't miss the WalMart fabrics, but I know that those of you who are in areas where that was about the only fabric source seriously must. I will sign any petition to bring them back.

As far as fabric prices compared between LQSs and JoAnnes - HOLY COW. I spent 2 hours in an LQS today, and bought several different fabrics in severaly different lengths. My friend and I went to JoAnnes (Sarasota, FL) after leaving the wonderful LQS (Sew Worth It on Clark Rd ) and I was APPALLED at the prices. The awesome quilt shop quality fabrics at the LQS were significantly cheaper than many of the lesser quality fabrics at JoAnnes. I've seen concerns on this board a lot in the past year about the increase in fabric prices. From my experience the increase is mostly at the chain store fabric stores. Maybe THOSE are the ones that quilters should consider boycotting!!!

domaema 09-10-2010 03:34 PM

I signed the petition. I agree with you jljack.

Pickles 09-10-2010 03:44 PM

I signed gladly

aurora41 09-10-2010 03:44 PM

I do not have a Walmart close by, but I sign the petition for you.

Sunshine 09-10-2010 03:50 PM

I have not seen this petition before. I have called and voiced my opinion to corp. office in AK. I also signed the petition.

Debi S 09-10-2010 04:10 PM

I hate the store remodel. Our fabric dept. did stay! I cannot get many items that used to buy there. Not in Wal-Marts best interest to upset customers. We will go across town or to a neighboring town to shop if they have what we want. Our nearest JoAnn's, Hancock, and other quality small shops are 25-60 miles away. I will shop there if I make a trip for other things but seldom drive just for fabric.

debbieoh 09-10-2010 04:11 PM

Won't do any good signed this awhile ago. our local walmart just closed and they opened a new one across town. and guess what fabric dept is GONE!!! they have fabric in 2yd packages. Really sucks. Now the only place to get fabric around us is joann's
