That I doubt! One about 10 miles west of me and another about 13 miles west will probably NEVER have fabric. They consider themselves too upscale for mundane stuff like cloth.

Here's the real question? When a WW representative tells you that fabric is coming back, are they talking about the precuts and kits like my store has-----------or a real, honest to gosh fabric department?

owlvamp 05-26-2011 11:07 PM

I believe that if they do the ones I have been seeing is bringing back the precut fabrics.

I don't do my major shopping at Wally World anymore. Stuff is too hard to find. Some aisles run N-S, some E-W, the aisles are not marked as to content.

I can't remember what chain near my DD's near DC has it , but one store has an aisle by aisle shopping list you can use to map out your purchases. So the snack aisle would have chips, cookies, candy bars, whatever listed.

All you had to do was check the box for the item you wanted. Then proceed thru the store picking up items easily as you go. If you remembered half way thru the store you need granola bars, you could go back to teh snack aisle or cereal or whereever the store kept them.

With WW even the employees can't keep up with where crap is moved to.

Many times you will see people leave the bolts on the cutting table and leave, they have other things to do rather than standing there ringing a little bell. Why they can't understand this is just beyond my comprehension.

very well stated!

cut 1/8 of a yard???????????? when their accuracy is +/- 4 inches each end????????? too funny!

In the meantime, though, I'm shopping at Hobby Lobby.

Our HL seems to be reducing their fabric lines.

I do not shop at any Wal-Mart now,but we did buy every thing for the house before the remodel and usually left about $100.00 every time we were there.

One thing that happened in our remodel is that the store quit carrying several brands of each item. For instance---onion soup mix. I hate the Lipton brand, and prefer the Campbell brand. but WW quit carrying it. @@ Same story all over the store. Just a couple brands of cake mix. Eliminated a bunch of the non-white breads. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I tried to buy a large spool of WHITE thread. Sold out. Then looked for winter white or pale cream. No go. Also, not one spool of black. okay---------i'm going to shut up. I'm getting mad just thinking about it

Thats a bit of a drive for me too, considering I have one not 5mins away (91st Ave & Camelback). I tried to ask if they were bringing back the fabric, but the manager of that dept was not available, and the girl I spoke with did not know. Think I will give them a call today and see if the Mgr knows anything. But, thanks for the tip, on the Bethany Home store.

"We lost fabric in a remodel a couple years ago. The store is so messsed up now, I couldn't stand another remodel unless they tried toreturn to straight aisles, all going north and south again.[/quote]

That is what our store did--remodeled, took away fabric dept and messed up the aisles. I don't go there as much as I used to. I would be very happy if the aisles would be like they used to....I don't know what they were thinking putting aisles every which way:(. Harder to find things:(. I am sure Sam is not happy with the way things went.

The Walmart in Southern Texas is going strong. Much more fabrid than it ever had.

cassiemae 05-27-2011 12:39 PM

I live in Billings, Mt and they still have the fabric dept it isn't as big as it was before they did the last remodel which
has been at least 5 years ago. I liked it before but at least they still ha ve fabric on the bolt. They are suppose to start
a remodel this month but not as of yesterday. :?:

smagruder 05-27-2011 12:56 PM

I was just at the one WalMart that still has fabric.... they are remodeling and will get in lots more fabric. I spoke to one of the workers and he said, it is about time they listened to you sewers.

Virta Walter 05-27-2011 01:02 PM

I work for walmart (cashier) in Ellsworth Maine and our Walmart is not getting fabric in. Nobody can tell me why either. We got guns back and paint mixing back, but no fabric, no zippers, a little bit of thread. So not all Walmarts are bring things back.

We still have fabric at out Wal-Mart. My inside person told me that the big wigs of the company decided they made a mistake by pulling fabrics. They also plan on getting back their gun dept. It may take awhile but they do intend to bring fabric back.

musicaljan 05-28-2011 02:31 AM

I've heard all the talk about the return of fabric as well. And the employees you ask also have heard both answers. I would love to have fabric back as the nearest Joann's or Hobby Lobby for me is one hour away.

I said all along they were shooting themselves in the foot. The bean counters saw they weren't making a huge profit in the fabric department so decided to eliminate it. However, people like me shop for fabric then shop for our other things. Once WM took out their fabric, I saw no reason to go. I get most of my groceries at our local grocery store. They will even match WM's ads. They LOST business since I don't shop there hardly at all anymore I don't think they took that into account when making their decision to axe the fabric department.

And "pre-cuts" don't count as a "fabric department", no matter how you slice it.

I hope they bring our fabric dept. back. Until then, I just plan my trips better. And make sure I have my Joann's coupon before I head out. :D

I agree - I only go to Wally World for the fabrics/sewing notions but usually end up purchasing other items just so I don't have to make two stops. If they pulled our fabric dept. I would have no need to shop there at all!

some of the stores in Florida and Maine have fabric. In Florida it is in Osprey and they never lost their fabric department and in Maine it was in Waterville. Lovely fabric.

Does Wal-Mart honor JoAnns coupons??

Janis 05-28-2011 12:01 PM

Walmart will honor Joann's ads for a price on the identical item, but not the % off coupons, unless that is a brand new policy. They haven't in the past accepted any % off coupons, or at least mine hasn't.

Why don`t we e-mail or call Wal-Mart? We just lost our material dept. in a remodel too. Much bigger store and there isn`t a straight aisle any where, we were there 2 or3 times and every time I leave upset. They told me that there would be material in Wal-Mart stores that are 50 miles apart. But they don`t know how far that is from me. I give up!!! I just got back from JoAnn`s and got every thing I`ll need for awhile and will be looking in a small shop that just opened out in the country.

One of the first things I had to go look for after our remodel was the Hunts pudding cups that I put in my hubby's lunch. I'd expect them to be where they always were--------with the pudding. Nope, I finally asked a manager-------------------they put them with the baby diapers and formula. I told him they could keep them there and I didn't need them.

NOt too long afterwards I found them in the new "snack" aisle. @@

ging10ging 05-28-2011 08:48 PM

Maybe their waiting to see how many people buy the fabric if it goes good their put in more. Just a thought. Sue

D'Marie 05-28-2011 10:27 PM

What I was told was the main people who run Wal-Mart had a meeting and decided they had made an error by removing fabrics, guns, and someother things. To many complaints from people, I think.Guess we will all have to wait and see if they keep their word or not.Our Wal-Mart store sells lots of fabric.Sometimes I'm not crazy for the patterns but it still sells.

newell 05-28-2011 10:39 PM

Pudding cups with diapers? Makes a whole lot of sense to me :?:

montanajan 05-28-2011 10:43 PM

We now have a real fabric department once again, after it had almost closed out. The clerk told me they get new fabric in daily, & are expecting better quality than they previously had.
I did notice though, that the craft section is just about non-existant.

Amythyst02 05-29-2011 05:57 AM

haha, this just goes to show you, how easy it is to forget about going to Wal Mart. I was going to go there this morning for groceries, but after looking at the list, there is nothing I need except groceries, so I am heading to Safeway instead. Its right around the corner, so it will save some gas. However, if there had been fabric and notions at WalMart I would have gone there to save me the trip out to JoAnn's later.

When I was young (ancient history) Sears, Wards and Penneys also sold fabric, and you could order it from their catalogs. There were also more local fabric stores, and they were thriving. Almost every woman could sew, and many did at least a little. Times have changed.

When Walmart in Oshkosh, Wi went out of fabric; that is exactly what I was told. More money in electronics.

When our WalMart was remodeled, the fabric dept. went away. They moved the entire craft section of the store and had a big opening for scrapbooking, parties, and cakes. Then they took that away and put back the aisles. We have fabrics, but I won't buy them since I can't look at it with my hands. I don't want to buy precuts.

delores wright 06-20-2011 12:30 PM

what they need in walmart is someone that knows fabric and what people want in fabric and put them in charge of all the fabric depts djw

Amythyst02 06-20-2011 01:00 PM

I kinda have an odd thinking to all this Wal Mart stuff...its my outlook on it.

Supposedly they took away the fabric dept to add more electronics like, cell phones, big TV's etc. Now in my opinion those are one purchase items. Its not likely I will visit that dept again to purchase another TV or cellphone etc.

However, with the fabric dept, you have ladies that may come in to just grab a spool of thread, or zipper, and then they start to look around, and before you know it, they have found some awesome fabric they cannot live without. It is likely that I will return again and again, because I will need thread, zippers, interfacing etc.

I think Wal Mart needs to really examine what makes them money over the long haul. Not what makes them money a couple of times a year (like Christmas, etc). They honestly need someone in the higher ranks that thinks like a woman. Just my 2cents worth : )
