Awhile back someone posted an article from Wall Street Journal stating that WalMart will be putting back fabric depts starting May 1st. I live in Las Vegas & have been to 6 different Super WalMart & non have put in fabric. I did find a small older store that had a few bolts but found they were the same price as JoAnn's. I just returned from San Antonio, Tx and they never got rid of their fabric in the first place. Does anyone have anymore info on this?

BellaBoo 05-25-2011 08:47 AM

The Walmart in my town that did away with the fabric dept. is planning to put the fabric back after a remodel. Maybe the stores are waiting for their turn to be remodeled. It won't be a whole store remodel just rearranging of space to make room for the fabric dept again. Dumb Walmart.

Grammy o'5 05-25-2011 08:51 AM

Where in Las Vegas are you? The Walmart at Eastern & Serene (just south of the 215) has a fabric dept. They never did get rid of it. Whoo Hoo!

lbaillie 05-25-2011 08:52 AM

the Walmart in my town sure did put the fabric back, if you want to call 1 yards cuts on hangers putting it back, I don't think there were 15 choices. Very disappointing

cathyvv 05-25-2011 09:02 AM

The store I go to in NJ was slated to close their fabric dept on 5/1, but were informed before 5/1 that the store management had changed it's mind. They will probably phase fabric back in 'strategically' to maximize sales.

msquilter59 05-25-2011 09:19 AM

The stores around me still haven't put the departments back yet. A couple sell the pre-cut fabrics but not really a lot of choice. There's a store about 1 1/2 hours north that decided not to close their department. Yippee! Holefully the others will follow.

Buckeye Rose 05-25-2011 09:37 AM

sorry, dbl post

Buckeye Rose 05-25-2011 09:37 AM

Our walmart was scheduled to lose their fabric dept too, but decided it wasn't in their best interest. Decision based on sales $$$ from Dept. Am sure the decision for other stores will be the same....whether or not they think they will make money by keeping or bringing back fabric by the yard. Every decision they make is a take on previous fabric sales, so if your Walmart had a fabric dept. that didn't have good sales don't count on getting it back.

Dingle 05-25-2011 09:44 AM

The Wal-Mart way up on Craig Rd has fabric. It seems they have alot their too. I have been there twice in the last 6 months. I got alot of the sale fabric $2-3 a yard and a bolt of bamboo batting for $30.00.

lallyann 05-25-2011 09:47 AM

I'm still waiting for our Walmart to get their fabric back too. I am really hoping they do...but I guess when I see it for myself I'll believe it. I was so sad when they closed our fabric department down. :(

quiltingb1 05-25-2011 09:50 AM

I live in San Antonio and not all of the Walmarts have fabric. One near me never lost it but doesn't carry a lot of it still and the other took it out but hasn't gotten it back in and no one seems to be able to tell me if they are going to get it back. They did bring back sewing machines and a few notions but that is it at least so far.

jshorty 05-25-2011 11:14 AM

Thanks for the tip. I usually shop at Eastern & Patrick or Nellis & Boulder Hwy. But when I'm out running around & see a Walmart I usually stop in to see if they have fabric. I'll check out the one on Serene. Have you found any others besides that one?

cathylynn 05-25-2011 11:52 AM

the Walmart on Marks st in Henderson has a small fabric dept. the clerk didn't think it would be expanded (bummer). have never shopped at the Eastern & Serene Walmart - will have to check it out.

hobbykat1955 05-25-2011 12:30 PM

Someone said on another message she was told all Walmarts will have fabric by end of July

Read my post again. I think there are 2 on Craig Rd. I go to the one that is closest to Nellis Air Force Base. :D

fabric_fancy 05-25-2011 04:46 PM

you can always order the fabric on the walmart website and have it shipped to the store near you for free.

Lynn Luker 05-25-2011 05:05 PM

The Walmart on Centenniel has fabrics too. But, when I called to see if they were doing the block of the month, the girl who answered said they'd never heard of it! (so I'm not sure how big their selection is) I too have chased all over town to try and find fabrics. Thanks to all you Vegas quilters for the locations! I sure wish they would put more fabrics in more stores. And, then TELL us which ones have a more complete fabric department!

jshorty 05-25-2011 11:38 PM

Thanks I'll try that one too. I got e-mail from Fabric Boutique Quilt store (Decature & W Charleston) Big Sale this weekend.

ckhbart 05-26-2011 02:27 AM

Hey Everybody...just keep calling and calling and calling again and let WalMart know that the fabric and craft department is important!! I hope that is the reason that they did not shut down ours!!

smagruder 05-26-2011 03:14 AM

I have emailed Wal Mart.. got a generic response. Here is the phone number for corporate office. I plan to call today and inquire as to their plans to return fabric to stores and see if there is a list of them, maybe mine will be one... Here is hoping!

smagruder 05-26-2011 03:15 AM

Gee, it would have been nice if I had given you the number

Darlene 05-26-2011 03:25 AM

I was told by a manager that it will be 2-3 months before the fabric will be here.

That was me jshorty. The other comments were right on the mark. They will replace fabric when the store is up for remodeling. Mine just remodeled but we never lost our fabric. They did move it from one end to the other. Now it's in line with groceries, pet food and candy. It's not set up like a department. Just row after row. They took out the big, old two sided cutting table which was usually piled high with fabric to restock and odd boxes. Now they have a one side cutting table about 4' x 5'. Don't remember seeing the pattern drawers either. Think they designed it after the Hobby Lobby which is about a mile away. It's about 1/3 the size it used to be and there isn't a clerk on duty there. You have to ring for help and God knows who you will get. Most of them don't know more than how to squeeze scissors. And if you get a man, joke, joke, joke. He can't even FIND the scissors.

lovelyl 05-26-2011 04:11 AM

The WalMart in my town (Ohio) has kept their fabric section. I asked a clerk if they were going to do away with it and she said no, because several people in the area had called WalMart headquarters and asked them not to!?!
The closest JoAnn's or LQS is at least a 20 minute drive away, so I think headquarters may have taken that into account when they decided to keep it open.
I guess calling WalMart's headquarters would be a good way to get the "scoop" or beg to have the fabric section reinstated!

Terri Deweber 05-26-2011 04:32 AM

Our store in Denison, Tx was given the word this last week that it would not be going away as planned. In fact, it will be almost doubleing in size. Our store already has a great selection and pretty good prices. I sometimes can find the same fabric at Walmart as at Joanns for less. I am just thrilled. The Sherman store, about 10 minutes down the same hwy 75 will be remodeling to put theirs back in. YEA!! The manager said it would be going back into 2000 stores.

I talked to Customer Service yesterday and I told them I had heard they were going to have a fab department again and they said that they were slowly bringing it back, albeit smaller and packaged fabric - God help the person that needs two yards and there is only one packaged yard - and that it should be in place by this coming fall! That's what she said. I don't like our St. Paul store so I would probably go to West St. Paul for my fabric or at least to see what they will be having. Edie

Amythyst02 05-26-2011 05:28 AM

Our WalMart has started to add some things back in, but I have yet to see thread or any other type of notions. There are a few packaged fabrics, but I like to feel the fabric. It would be very convenient for me if they were to enlarge the fabric dept, but I have a feeling they think this package stuff is going to work for folks. Personally I will travel the 30mins to JoAnns or Hobby Lobby, to get what I need if all WalMart sells is packaged fabrics. WalMart is just a few minutes away, which would be nice if they would reopen the fabric dept the way it was before.

I think they will soon discover that adding just a bit of sewing items is not what we were asking for.

Grandma Libby 05-26-2011 05:34 AM

Our local Wal-Mart in Bluefield, Va., says they have not been contacted yet but "will check on it." I hope they put it back in ours!

whatever 05-26-2011 05:47 AM

HMM maybe we need to write wal mart and let them know how many people want it back

Fran Juern 05-26-2011 05:51 AM

I questioned the Walmart in my area and they said they had no knowledge of fabric being brought back

Yooper32 05-26-2011 06:34 AM

The reason that they got rid of fabric in most stores was because it was not cost effective in that the dollars taken in versus the area space plus the hourly wage of employees didn't cut it. Where their logic was wrong is the fact that those workers in that dept also had to work the craft and party goods aisle, those all being in the same general dept. In my store, and many, these depts were placed at opposite ends of the store, more or less, and when working in crafts, most certainly could not hear the pathetic dingy bell clear over in fabric. What they can't understand is, if someone is there at all times to cut fabric for customers, the dollars coming in would be worth the man hours in wages. Many times you will see people leave the bolts on the cutting table and leave, they have other things to do rather than standing there ringing a little bell. Why they can't understand this is just beyond my comprehension.

Marysewfun 05-26-2011 06:53 AM

I commented to a little gal in the Dallas, OR, Wal-Mart that it looks like they are keeping it and she said as long as the "business" is there to support it. They have added some pretty nice bolts back in and there is a bin of $5 which is the 2 yds left on the end of a bolt - and they did tell me they would cut an order as small as 1/8 yd! Anyway, looks like we are okay now. Their thread selection is -okay- I wish they had more. I went back to buying cones online. I also started noticing some of the online fabrics and may give that a try.

Ours has a wall with the precuts but nothing els. This is the biggest mistake that store ever made

Cassews 05-26-2011 07:02 AM

I am still waiting for Wally to put the fabric dept back in the one Wally. The other Wally has a small fabric dept compared to what it used to be with all the bolts of fabric, they used to have embroidery thread etc..
But then I am still waiting for Jo-Ann's to re-open like I was told it would !LOL I guess till then I will shop Hobby Lobby, and the LQS !!

Silver Sandy 05-26-2011 07:40 AM

Walmart in Bullhead City has misc fabric packages and some small kits; purses, etc. The store in Kingman has a fabric department, but you can tell they want to get rid of it as the aisles are getting shorter and they want to cut down on the help that this dept calls for to cut out fabric. The quality has gone down hill too.
In the midwest and south, there seems to be more pull to keep fabric in these stores.

I checked with the store manager where I am yesterday. There will be what they are calling a remodel, but which really will be rearranging the store to undo some of the "damage" done by the more extensive remodel last year. The fabric department was supposed to be ready by the end of May but has been postponed until the end of June. The manager here said fabric will be available the last week in June and will be up and running full blast by the first week in July. He said the fabric will be by the bolt and there will be a cutting table and clerks. He also said there will probably not be as great a selection as there was before, but I know that if the customers show up and the department is profitable, the store will add stock. That's the way supply and demand works. I am hoping the quality of the fabric in the store is as good or better than the fabric I ordered online from WalMart.com. If not...

It is probable that all stores are on different schedules. To get accurate information, call your store and talk to your manager.

In SoCal, they took out the fabric depts in my area, one completely, and shrank the other one, plus the prices went up and the quality went down. They still have a cutter, but they have to come from several aisles over. I usually just go to Jo-Anne's now. I hope they are actually listening to us, though!
