I haven't washing W&N in the machine, but it doesn't fall apart when washed by hand. I've prewashed smaller pieces for small quilts. There is a yellow tinge to the water after soaking for 20 minutes. I put the pieces in the dryer and they come out great! I've also air dried the batting for 24 hours. Don't do this with Fairfield 80/20 cotton batting however. It really separates in the dryer. I haven't tried this with any other batting.

Tinabodina 06-16-2011 04:11 AM

Hmmmm, maybe I should read the directions, but I have never washed mine either. No need to start now. :D

bearisgray 06-16-2011 04:17 AM

I've washed Warm and Natural on a gentle cycle in my machine and dried it on a gentle cycle in the dryer.

Turned out fine.

(This is batting that I purchased 15 (or so) years ago - the construction of the batting may have changed since then.)

I like the flat look of quilts - so that was the first washing.

The cream colored batting turned the wash water very yellow.

The second washing of the batting was because something "unpleasant" was deposited on it.

I did completely destroy some other battings by attempting to wash them.

maddenkids8 06-16-2011 05:02 AM

I always wash it first. I fill the washer with water, a little detergent and let it sit for 30 min or so. Then I rinse it and put it in my dryer. I use a gentle cycle on the rinse part. Have been doing this for many years and had no troubles. I figure since I prewash my material, I should do the same with the batting. Good luck.

I have never washed batting before quilting.

susie-susie-susie 06-16-2011 05:24 AM

I have never washed Warm and Natural before using and it is my favorite batting. I like the crinkled look. As someone else said, maybe they are just covering themselves. I never even thought of washing first. I am picturing a ball of fluff and my dryer vent plugged with cotton. Makes me shudder.

I've done a lot of quilts with warm and natural, never
washed the batting no problem.

Sandra-P 06-16-2011 05:49 AM

I have washed mine and dried it in the dryer. It does shrink when you do this but other than that I havent had any problems.

This works for you...that's good enough for me. I'll try it! Thanks! W&N IS very good batting.

The packaging (on mine) SAYS it will shrink some - so I would not consider that a "problem" -

Jeanniejo 06-16-2011 06:03 AM

Is it really old batting ? I've never seen instructions on W&N like that!

Polliwog 06-16-2011 06:09 AM

Warm and Natural has improved greatly since it first came out. You probably have a very old version of it which had visible seeds and other "stuff" in it. I finally threw out the rest of the old stuff because there are so many newer and better quality products on the market. Their website suggests this in their bulleted list following the first paragraph.

RDM 06-16-2011 06:18 AM

I like W&N and do not prewash my batting. I've had no problems. I like how it looks once the finished quilt is washed. If I were doing a difficult heirloom quilt I might worry more about residue oils.

mimee4 06-16-2011 06:30 AM

I'm with the rest - I never washed W&N before making into a quilt and never had any problems.

Rose Bagwell 06-16-2011 06:54 AM

I use that batting all the time, and I too am glad that I don't read instructions. All my quilts have turned out fine, even after laundering. I have never noticed any runoff or residue of oil on the fabric . If I was you, I would use it as is.

Lucy90 06-16-2011 07:26 AM

Used W&N for years and never washed before using. Like someone said, maybe for liability reasons they put it in the directions. I was each quilt after it is done.

Caramba! I don't want to be bothered with washing and hanging batting out to dry. Do you think I can just use it as is? Big foo.

Here's what is says on the box: "...the small brown flecks are seed remnants which contain traces of cottonseed oil. This oil should be removed before you assemble your quilt layers ..."

AND ... the instructions say to HAND WASH in a basin or tub with mild detergent... Soak for 30 minutes and rinse out SEVERAL TIMES!!!"

I'm puzzled! I don't think this can be the same Warm & Natural that I use! I have in front of me the wrapper that came with my last purchase. It says,'Pre-washing is not necessary. Once quilted, machine wash & dry finished quilt. Stitch up to 10" apart. There will be a 3% shrinkage with the first wash. If pre-shrinking the batting is desired, follow the optional pre-washing instructions below for best results.' Then follows the washing instructions. Do you think it might be very old stock - before the present process was manufactured?

Jennifer22206 06-16-2011 09:16 AM

same thing here. I've never pre-washed my batting.

Maureen 06-16-2011 09:27 AM

me either, I never washed it

janeknapp 06-16-2011 10:54 AM

Somerset Val, the wrapper that you have is up-to-date. You can decide if you want to prewash it. If you don't prewash, it will shrink later when the quilt is washed. If you do prewash, it will have little to no shrinkage when the quilt is washed later. You choose. Either way...W&N batting will work.

I did not prewash and used it in a baby quilt. It did shrink after the first wash which gave it the antique look.

MadQuilter 06-16-2011 11:27 AM

I remember when the W&N used to have the coarse little flecks of "oily nature" in it and I used to prewash in the machine. I just agitated the batting until fully soaked, and let it sit for a while. Then I spunt it out and dried it in the dryer. It really wasn't a big deal.

wraez 06-16-2011 11:42 AM

I have never ever prewashed my warm and natural batting. No negative results.

so I'll continue to use without prewashing.

I do however hang it over my upstairs railing to 'relax' before I use it.

quiltingcousin 06-16-2011 12:15 PM

Like so many others I used to pre-wash, but then a lady at a local shop told me she never even washes fabric or battings. She told me in no uncertain terms that fabrics were not the way they used to be (can you tell I'm over 60?) ditto battings.

I took her at her word and measured my next warm and natural before washing and drying.......end result....no shrinkage so this gal has joined the ranks of using a'natural......Fabrics though are another story as my research shows this is a mixed bag as far as what is appropriate. I figure if I'm putting all that work into it, I'm better off safe than sorry! Sign me "Methusola"

BettyGee 06-16-2011 01:54 PM

Never pre-wash batting, wash after quilt is completed. My LQS store agrees. Hope this helps.

Jammin' Jane 06-16-2011 02:07 PM

I love W&N batting and have never washed it first!

dash2000lbs 06-16-2011 02:31 PM

Thanks for info....

crazyquilter56 06-16-2011 05:48 PM

I went to their website you don't have to wash it only if you chose to wash it.... From the website >>>Many quilters prefer not to pre-wash to achieve the unique effect created by the slight shrinkage of the batting when the completed quilt is washed. I do throw in in a hot dryer and preshrink it never had a problem.....

kkdolls 06-17-2011 12:18 AM

I never wash Warm and Natural batting. It is my favorite and I really hate using anyother kind. Enjoy.

fabric_fancy 06-17-2011 01:05 AM

i wash my batting to shrink it.

i put it on gentle and i throw it in the dryer too on low.

grandma anna 06-17-2011 05:30 AM

I never wash batting.

penski 06-18-2011 06:00 PM

wow i never read that , i have used it both ways if i dont want a crinckle look after quilting i will soak it in the tub and then put it in the dryer, otherwise i just use it right off the bolt

M.I.Late 06-18-2011 06:11 PM

I'm with Lori. But it may be older stuff. (You know, before your time). If it says to, I would. However, I do mine in the washer and dryer. Its not as bad as it sounds and it dries fairly quickly.

Joyce Ann 06-19-2011 08:50 AM

I guess I never read directions. Use it all the time and never have washed it
