Accckkkk!!! I purchased a couple of boxes of warm and natural batting at a quilter's sale and was so excited to use it on my next projects and then I read the instructions inside -- you have to wash it first because it has cotton seed oil??? Caramba! I don't want to be bothered with washing and hanging batting out to dry. Do you think I can just use it as is? Big foo.

Here's what is says on the box: "...the small brown flecks are seed remnants which contain traces of cottonseed oil. This oil should be removed before you assemble your quilt layers ..."

AND ... the instructions say to HAND WASH in a basin or tub with mild detergent... Soak for 30 minutes and rinse out SEVERAL TIMES!!!"

Chele 06-15-2011 11:42 AM

I'm glad I never read instructions. I've never washed warm and natural batting. Once the quilt is made, it launders beautifully. Nice and crinkly. It's my favorite batting.

Doreen 06-15-2011 11:43 AM

I never wash my batting first. I always wash my quilts after they are completed.

justwannaquilt 06-15-2011 11:44 AM

I have never washed W&N batting and have never had any trouble. Maybe just luck, but it works for me, and after seeing what happened to batting that I sewed "inside out" Yeah I aint puttin bare batting in my washer ! lol

Quilter7x 06-15-2011 11:45 AM

I have never washed it either. It does shrink a little in the wash, but that's what gives the quilt a natural look.

Ripped on Scotch 06-15-2011 11:46 AM

I washed it once.. and that took to long to dry so I haven't done it again since.

luvspaper 06-15-2011 11:47 AM

I've used W&N for years and have never washed it first....with no problems/issues...... I wonder if they do that just to cover any liability?

Jenni M 06-15-2011 11:49 AM

I've never washed batting either.

Jim's Gem 06-15-2011 11:49 AM

I do not prewash my batting. The only time I did was when I was using it in craft projects.

craftybear 06-15-2011 11:50 AM

I have never prewashed the batting

Lori S 06-15-2011 11:52 AM

I have prewashed Warm and Natural but only for those quilted items I want to remain flat or with out the shrinkage. For regular quilts that I want a bit of crinkle .. I use it straight out of the package.
Warm and natural is one of the better battings ars far as not have a big cotton ball in the bottom of the washer when you prewash.
If you really want to pre wash , I soak mine over night , then agitate for only a minute or two --gentle cycle. I do spin dry , then pop in the dryer regular cycle.

Krystyna 06-15-2011 11:53 AM

I just updated my original post. You're supposed to wash it BY HAND!!! (Their caps, not mine). And ... "Wash as you would a fine cotton sweater."
PUH-LEASE!!!

Dina 06-15-2011 11:55 AM

I never even thought of washing my batting first, and I don't think I will think of it now!!

athenagwis 06-15-2011 11:57 AM

Same as everyone else, never washed it and never had a problem. Have fun!!

Cheers!
Rachel

Krystyna 06-15-2011 11:58 AM

Whew! Just afraid when I read that thing about the cotton seed oil. I was almost afraid we'd go up in flames or slide off the bed if I didn't pre-wash!

emerald46 06-15-2011 12:00 PM

I've used Warm & Natural since it first came out and have never prewashed and never had a problem washing once the quilt is finished!

I just searched and found this about the batting

http://www.warmcompany.com/wnpage.html

Deborahlees 06-15-2011 12:16 PM

how much batting do you have ????
I have NEVER washed mine....I am wondering if it is 'older' and newer doesn't say that....

Once again Craftybear's search efforts have paid off! I have never washed batting either and GLAD you don't have to!

Krystyna 06-15-2011 12:22 PM

Ooooo! Thanks so much. And they have some cute projects on the site, too!

Yeah, well, I throw my fine cotton sweaters in the machine.

85 quilts and I've never washed W&N batting before. I doubt people would be running to buy it, even with a 50% off coupon, if that was really required.

That said, all my quilts are heavily quilted. Not microstippling, but dense, so I'm never really worried about the batting separating or clumping.

Deborahlees 06-15-2011 12:47 PM

If you are really really really concerned, then wash the quilt when you are done and before you use it or give it away.....I personally would/could not be bothered with washing before....But I will say I washed my last quilt and loved how it looks and from now on will wash before I give away....Also a good way of knowing for sure it washes OK....and that no seams opened, heaven forbide !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

familyfun 06-15-2011 01:05 PM

I never wash it either. I like the wrinkle look that it gives the quilt when it shrinks.

mosaicthinking 06-15-2011 01:19 PM

Just for an alternative to the majority of non-washers, I have washed W & N before using the wool setting on my front-loader, and no washing detergent. Then I let it dry on a drying rack. It survived the process just fine. I am not crazy about the wrinkle look, which is why I did pre-wash.

Is this box of W&N really old? There current packaging doesn't have this on it, that I'm aware of! Maybe the old W&N was processed differently than the new.

It could be. It was from the quilter's estate sale. Only paid $5 a box. Who could resist?

If I only paid $5 for how many yards I wouldn't sweat it....wash after done....

PaperPrincess 06-15-2011 02:45 PM

Um, thanks for that nice offer, but I wouldn't want to inconvenience you! ;)

May in Jersey 06-15-2011 04:16 PM

Only batting that I've prewashed was Hobbs 80/20 because I didn't want any shrinkage of the quilt when it was washed. I soaked whole bat in washing machine a certain number of minutes, no detergent, next put it on spin dry and then I put it on my dining room table with the ceiling fan turning over it. If you wanted to you could do follow the same steps with W&N.

HollyInfinite 06-15-2011 06:10 PM

I would never waste my time washing batting, that sounds crazy.

Cottonseed oil isn't bad, I can't imagine it doing anything to it, its just going to wash out when you go and wash your quilt the first time anyway.

sewgull 06-15-2011 06:36 PM

Never washed Warm and Natural before using in a quilt.
My quilts after being used and loved. No problems

kathdavis 06-15-2011 08:01 PM

Just had a batting dealer speak at our quilting quilt this week. She said we should never prewash batting. You always take the chance of it falling apart.

NJ Quilter 06-16-2011 02:18 AM

Never prewashed W&N and it's the only batting I've ever used. Never had a problem either.

Lavada 06-16-2011 03:13 AM

me either

grannie cheechee 06-16-2011 04:09 AM

I've never pre-washed W&N batting. Guess that's because I've never read the directions on the package. LOL. I do take it out of the pkg., and fluff it.
