Ok, so now I'm a little freaked out.

I don't prewash my fabrics, ever. Never had a problem. I've also always used poly batting, because, well, cotton batting is just too damn expensive. BUT, I bought some last year when it was on sale at 50% (still cost 12 bucks a meter, after the discount!) and have been saving it for a special quilt. I was going to use poly batting for my baby quilt that I just finished, but when I went downstairs to get it, I couldn't find any, I guess I used it all up, so I took out the cotton batting.

OMG, what a dream to work with!!! I spray basted, no pins or anything, and it all stayed super nice, no puckers, super smooth, no wrinkles in the back... WOW!!!
However, now I'm faced with the washing problem. I wouldn't prewash my batting, but now that it's in the quilt, I'm not sure I'm supposed to put it in the dryer? I did FMQ meandering quilting on it, relatively close loops, so I don't think it would bunch up or fall apart or anything in the wash, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to dry in flat or in the dryer. I love the look of the fabric that shrinks in the dryer, which is one of the reasons I don't pre-wash, and it's always looked great with poly-batting once it's out of the dryer. One of the ladies at work today was telling my mother to never put cotton batting in the dryer because it will come apart and bunch up and pucker and look awful after. I know she quilts by hand, and her quilting is not very close together, so maybe that's why she was saying that? I dunno, I'm too scared to wash my quilt now, lol!

P.S. it's a baby quilt for my son, so it's GOING to get dirty and need washing pretty often...

DebraK 03-31-2010 02:00 PM

It washes up nicely.

diannemc 03-31-2010 02:05 PM

I just finished a quilt using Warm and natural cotton batting in a baby quilt...It said it was pre-washed and had low shrinkage! I hope so...I would like to know if it shrinks or will bunch up when washed...I tried to quilt close but there is a border on my quilt that I didn't quilt close...??

twistedstitcher 03-31-2010 02:07 PM

I use it all the time. I machine wash and dry my quilts and have never had a problem with it. You can also tumble the quilt until it's partially dry and then hang it over a shower curtain rod or something similar and let it air dry the rest of the way.

It shrinks a tiny bit but it gives the quilt that nice puckery look. I've never had any problems with bunching or twisting even when the quilting is far apart.

sew_lulu 03-31-2010 02:08 PM

I use warm and natural batting and never have a problem with it.

QuiltMania 03-31-2010 02:10 PM

I never use any batting other than Warm and Natural. I don't wash the batting until the quilt is finished. Warm and Natural will shrink just enough to give that antique look to the quilt. I've never had any problems with the batting bunching no matter how far apart I quilt.

Oklahoma Suzie 03-31-2010 02:16 PM

It's all I use.

Ninnie 03-31-2010 02:20 PM

It's the only batting I ever use, and my quilts get washed a lot. Isn't it just wonderful!1 And it will be so soft when it comes out of the washing. It will wear well also.

Dragonfly Nana 03-31-2010 02:24 PM

Like so many others have said...it is the only thing I use. The price is very worth the difference in the quality.
No one has ever had a problem washing the quilts I have made with it numerous times.

This is the link to the Warm & Natural Website. It has a ton of info. http://www.warmcompany.com/wnpage.html I hope this helps.

I never pre wash and I throw all of my quilts (which I always use W & N) into the washer and dryer. It will shrink a little and give it that nice older quilt look that I love.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 03-31-2010 03:17 PM

The only problem with using Warm and Natural is you will now want to use it! I'm with you on the price, but it's so nice to play with I buy it occaisionally.

MadQuilter 03-31-2010 03:26 PM

That's all I use Warm and Natural or Warm and White. My quilts are SID'd at a minimum, washed in the washer with regular detergent and tossed in the dryer. They hold up well. No worries. I love the way the quilt ends up after the first wash - all puckered and soft.

maryb119 03-31-2010 03:51 PM

I wash my cotton batts before I use them. I hand quilt and it is soooo much easier to needle after they have been washed. I soak it in HOT water for about an hour until it is really wet but do not let the washer agitate. Then I put the washer on "spin" and get the water out. Then I put it in the dryer. When it is dry, I make the sandwich and start quilting. When the finished quilt needs to be washed, I wash it in the washer and hang dry it.

justwannaquilt 03-31-2010 04:04 PM

wash it, throw it in the dryer and it will be fine. I have never used poly batting (I can't handle the feel when I have rough hands) and I never prewash anything! It does give it that wrinkly used look!

All of these were done with W&N the first two were not washed yet when the pictures were taken but the others were. I washed them and then dried on high to get max. shrinkage/wrinkling! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-24590-1.htm

Good luck and Congratulations on the baby!

littlehud 03-31-2010 04:14 PM

I use it and it washes up just beautiful.

JackieG 03-31-2010 04:16 PM

Warm & Natural, by far, is the best product I've used and I've tried them all. There will be minimal shrinkage as the the one I use has a little polyester in it.

Same here, now that I've found stores nearby that carry it. I figured I'd wash and dry it like a "normal" person would, if it can't stand up to that than it's not worth it. But it does!

sewnsewer2 03-31-2010 05:01 PM

I use it all the time and wash and dry it. Never had a problem.

charwhit 03-31-2010 05:10 PM

I also use warm and natural all the time I buy it when Joann's has it 50% off and I have another 15% teacher discount.

MamaHen 03-31-2010 05:20 PM

Only batting I will use is Warm & Natural Cotton. Have never had a problem, wash & dry my quilts by machine all the time and many many times. Some are only lightly quilted by hand, and not real close. Once you use it, you'll never use anything else.

Besides it keeps me warm at night, and not too heavy for our warm southern nights.

amma 03-31-2010 05:48 PM

I think you too will fall in love with this batting :D:D:D
It is just about all I ever use also.

Horsestitcher 04-01-2010 02:49 AM

I use warm and natural all the time. It washes AND dries in the dryer very nicely. I buy it by the roll, much cheaper, comes to about $5-6 per yard versus $9-10 in the shop. www.thewarmcompany.com

Quilt4u 04-01-2010 02:56 AM

I use Warm and natural cotton all the time And have had no problems with it in the dryer.

Yeah, I always use the cotton batting ( I try to stock up when it is on sale) I never prewash my fabric. It washes up great and like twisted sticher said it gives it that nice "quilty " look.

I agree. I wash and dry mine.

I recently used warm & natural batting for a Quilts for Kids quilt and so I had to wash before sending it to them... Well I have a front loading washing machine and it did not spin all the water out of the quilt... I tried to spin it on several different settings and no luck so I finally had to wring it out by hand and then put it in the dryer... I took a long time to dry... I don't know why it would not spin the water out.. That was the first time that I have washed a quilt... But I have 2 more Quilts for Kids to do so I will see how they come out... I was thinking maybe I should throw in a couple of towels in the washer and see if that will help...

Jeannie 04-01-2010 07:06 AM

I always use warm and natural and all I make is baby quilts. I never pre wash the warm and natural. I do wash the quilt and I love the way it looks....like a quilt! I would go for it!

Jeannie 04-01-2010 07:06 AM

Forgot....I throw it in the dryer also.

Melanie, I suspect this ladie is using an old fasioned cotton batting that most likely does not have a finish on it to help hold it together or isn't needle finished like W&N. I am sure there are still ones like that on the market. I haven't seen batting like that in ages but it does need to be very closely quilted or it will fall apart or bunch up like this woman describes. But if it is quilted closely it does not look awful with machine washing and drying.
You will be fine with the W&N and should get beautiful old fasioned quilt shrinkage between this and your non prewashed fabrics. It would be great if you could post before and after pictures.

penski 04-01-2010 11:17 AM

welcome to the world of warm and natural it is great!! the only kind i use , i have dried mine both ways in the dryer or on a nice day i will dry it part of the way and lay it out on the patio in the sunshine to finish drying to get that fresh smell, i have never had a problem either way

iltoaz 04-01-2010 12:36 PM

thanks for all the infor on WandN. Ijust purchased a batting for finishing on a twin size for the grandson so it will be washed and dried. I also purchased when on sale. I feel much better about using it - will let you all know the outcome.

I have been using Warm company products for years. I am a longarm quilter and most of my customers love it. some still want poly. Also, my friend's cousin is the plant manager in Fletcher NC, which is only 2 1/2 hrs away from me. not affiliated, just love the stuff. I have one quilt that is 14 yrs old, with Warm and Natural and gets washed alot. still looks good.

zz-pd 04-01-2010 03:33 PM

Wash away and enjoy your creation. Penny

Catherine Marie 04-01-2010 06:21 PM

That's the beauty of Warm and Natural- it washes well, dries like a dream, and always looks great.

Ok, I held my breath taking it out of the dryer, but it looks awesome! It's perfectly puckered :)
