This sounds like something we can all use. Do you have any photos? Did you make it or is it readily available in stores?

thank you for the warning, whew I just started using cone thread .

carolynjo 02-20-2012 12:24 PM

I do leave an occasional cone on my sewing desk, but always far away and I have the end secured as well.

Jim's Gem 02-20-2012 12:51 PM

Bummer!!! Thanks for the warning!!!

Sandra-P 02-20-2012 01:15 PM

Thank you for sharing that with us. Sorry about your machine.

did the repair person say why the whole shaft would have to be replaced for a plastic part? that seems extreme. i'm not saying he's wrong, but i'd want another opinion. any mechanics in your family? as long as they stay away from the computer part, they should be able to get a look at the threads.

nstitches4u 02-20-2012 05:56 PM

Thanks for the warning. I'm going to go move my cone thread away from my machine right now.

callen 02-20-2012 06:20 PM

Oh my goodness. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. Hopefully nothing too drastic happened.

windycitygal 02-21-2012 09:32 AM

I keep my cone in a extra large coffee cup since the 10,000m does not fit on the tread holder and it stays behind my machine. This way any loose thread is down in the cup.

now that everyone's been warned, you need to get another price, unless you want to send his kids to college. if he gave you a very high price, then take a look for yourself. you don't have much to lose. if you take anything apart, lay it all out in the same order that you took it apart, so that when you put it back together, you get it right. the manual should have a diagram showing where everything is. if you already gave it to him you should study the manual and learn about your machine. the mechanical part isn't so scary. sorry this had to happen to you.

good info. Thanks for sharing. So the thread can wrap itself over and over on a part of my machine it is NOT supposed to be, but break at a crucial time when it is where it IS supposed to be?! Well, glory me! Now I have to pay attention to thread. Lord knows what that will do to my 1/4" seams I've been concentrating on!

glenda5253 02-21-2012 02:23 PM

Thanks for the warning! I've had some strange things get incorporated with my sewing from time to time. I could see how this could happen fairly easily.

connie d 02-21-2012 06:16 PM

That is really good advice. I will make sure to keep all my thread away from my machine.Thanks. :)

Sorry to hear about your mishap- I dont keep cones on my table, I dont like to use a cone on my brother, theres too much drag- so I use gutterman or coats n clarks star thread, which fit on the machine, if its a cone, it goes in a drawer, and most of the time, it has a plastic sleeve.
katz
P.S. your note about clearing the table more often......NAHHH!
good luck

WOW thanks for pointing that out. I just got a new machine and if I reck another machine my hubby said I am done sewing and will be doing hand work!

BellaBoo 02-22-2012 07:53 AM

The Brother 1500 is so easy to take the housing off and see everything inside. I do not take the handwheel part off. It's possible but aggravating to get back on in the right spot. I can see everything in that area when the housing is off without taking the turning part off. I don't recall plastic moving parts in the machine. I'll have to take notice the next cleaning I do for it.

I had this happen to me many years ago with my Bernina, only the thread got into the motor and wrapped around motor shaft, it was still under warranty as it was brand new. I learned my lesson about using cone threads.

Man sorry this happened to you but thanks so much for the warning I do this all the time. I'll be more deligant from now on, thanks for the post.

BETTY62 02-22-2012 10:11 PM

Thank you. I am so bad about leaving thread setting around on my sewing space.

As I sew the thread was winding off and wraping around the drive shaft. It cracked the plastic hand wheel cover. My dealer has told me that the part can't be replaced unless the whole drive shaft is replaced. So if you use cones be sure not to leave one on the sewing table. Lucky for me the Brother is still working and the thread didn't get into the machine.

What a bummer, thanks for sharinng.
