I firmly believe every book/pattern/tutorial/instruction should have the following warning.

Be aware that this technique is addictive and may cause undue stress on your quiltmaking. You will discover that before you have the first top finished you will have another cut, another on the cutting table to be cut and about three more still in the original store bags waiting in line to start the process.

mom-6 10-07-2010 07:02 AM

So should several others...bow tucks, etc....

featherweight 10-07-2010 07:04 AM

I agree 100%. I have noticed that too. The Bow Tucks, well, I have made so many that they are getting very boring anymore.

Ms Grace 10-07-2010 07:08 AM

Very true! :D

Rebecca VLQ 10-07-2010 07:13 AM

LOL! Maybe that's what I should do with my parrots fabric....make a stack n whack out of it...

I think you would be very pleased with the outcome. I have some parrot fabric but not quite enough. Darn it!!

pojo 10-07-2010 07:17 AM

I would like to try it buy it looks confusing too me.

amma 10-07-2010 07:55 AM

LOL that is so true Holice :D:D:D

scowlkat 10-07-2010 08:25 AM

Stack N Whacks are certainly addicting! Beware that One Block Wonders are actually a form of SNW! Took a class in OBW a couple of weeks ago and now am working on it while two SNWs are sitting there waiting to be completed! Why is it so easy to get distracted?

I have yet to make my first stack and whack, but already I'm addicted, I have several fabrics purchased just for that as well as numerous books, I am addicted before even cutting the fabric

klgreene 10-07-2010 08:45 AM

LOL

susiequilt 10-07-2010 08:49 AM

I think I'm the only one on the board that has no interest in them!
I don't know why they don't appeal to me.

stewyscrewy 10-07-2010 08:50 AM

one day i will get the right fabric to make one.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 10-07-2010 08:53 AM

LOL.... have done several with posies (4 block squares)and I'm just fasinated, the minute I see a pattern that has a large open square in it, my mind goes straight to a posey, and it works, adds a cool flair.
Haven't done OBW yet but am ready with the ruler !! It's on the list. :)

franie 10-07-2010 09:09 AM

I have to agree with that statement! A disclaimer. LOL

amandasgramma 10-07-2010 09:13 AM

Ummmmm please expand that...it's not just Stack and Whack designs or OBWs....it's quilting in general that's habit forming!!! I used to laugh when reading that you quilters had 4-8 WIPs going...now I have that many!!!!!!!

This is the WARNING I put at the end of my Dresden Kaleidoscope ebook!

Be Warned!!!

Kaleidoscopes are contagious!!!
Fabric Fever may set in!

Symptoms:

1.your heart beats faster and faster when you look at fabric
2. You break out in a sweat if you can’t buy that fabric
3. You look at a Kaleidoscope and know you can’t do just one!
4. You just can’t wait to get your hands on some fabric!
5. Your dreams are filled with fabrics to make more Kaleidoscopes!
6. You start seeing kaleidoscope possibilities in everything you see!

If you have any or all of these symptoms then you probably have:

Diagnosis: FABRIC FEVER and WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE? virus

Treatment:

You will need to buy more fabric to alleviate this symptom! You may need to make the next kaleidoscope to stop the spread of the “what will it look like” virus !!

When you reach the end of the number of Kaleidoscopes you need - the virus and the fever should disappear.

If you experience a return of Fabric Fever you will need to start the treatment all over again!!!

May you be blessed with good eyes strong hands and an able mind!
And great fabric!!

Sadiemae 10-07-2010 09:45 AM

Too cute!

Love this - made me laugh! What an incredible true statement :)

pocoellie 10-07-2010 11:11 AM

How true, how true. I had to tell myself no more after 5 in a row, kept finding fabric that would do another one, said no, you have other quilts(10) in the planning. Get those done first. LOL

dforesee 10-07-2010 11:11 AM

LOL ... nobody warned me and I am sinking in a sea of UFO's! There are so many great patterns and tutorials that are addicting; I haven't tried the bow tuck yet, but I do have the pattern.

np3 10-07-2010 11:32 AM

I'm still looking for the fabric for my first one. Soooo afraid to take the plunge.

pocoellie 10-07-2010 11:38 AM

pojo-it's a little time consuming but well worth the time. One of the best thing is some of the fabric we may have bought in the past and now we look at it and say, why in the world did I buy this? But it makes a great, beautiful stack and whack quilt. If you have fabric like this and it looks beautiful in the stack and whack, image what a beautiful piece of fabric looks like in a stack and whack. But, I've got to get the 10 planned quilts started before I can do another stack and whack.

wvdek 10-07-2010 11:46 AM

You guys are too funny.

I agree, I just can't seem to get into them. Oh well, there are so many others to get into...

dsb38327 10-07-2010 12:13 PM

Too funny! I feel that way about each new pattern I learn. We are learning the stack and whack at our quilting meeting this month. I will be hooked.

craftybear 10-07-2010 03:51 PM

Holice - yes we need to have Warnings!

Rhonda - love your saying!

Stack and Whacks do appeal to me, but I'm scared to death to try one! I'm afraid I may get started and decide it's too complicated and throw it to the side and find something else addicting to do!!

pojo 10-07-2010 03:58 PM

Is there a tuturiol on this stack and wack.

step by step one.

You are SO right! I started one OBW, and really liked the way it was turning out (I had about 30 'blocks'). Then I started thinking about how neat it would look with a different fabric that had brighter colors, etc. You get the idea. I now have two OBWs in progress, but no quilt tops out of them yet! (But if I happen to see just the right fabric......)

OHSue 10-07-2010 05:08 PM

My mind is over run with ideas, I don't need this one trying to sneak it's way in!

Jingle 10-07-2010 05:20 PM

I have 3 fabrics I plan to make OBW out of, I'm going to follow Cutebuns tutorial, hoping to start on it after 1st of year.

I totally agree about this!! I have caught the bug too! Made one as I won a pattern and then made a second!!

1st quilt- My Pines

Irish Pines (#2)

sandpat 10-08-2010 03:49 AM

They also didn't appeal to me...that is until I was "forced" to try it as a border for an IRR quilt (see, that wasn't mine). It was so much fun and turned out so great that the OBW sucked me in too, so be very careful!! LOL!!!

I made my first stack and whack in Paducha and it is beautiful and easy. I will make more.

Beth 10-08-2010 05:21 AM

What is bow tuck?

This is so true!!! I had made a bunch of stack and whacks, about 9 or so. They were so fun to make and see what the designs came out to be. I did one with animals and ended up, unintentionally, with a skunks stripes down a polar bear's back. I loved doing those. One lady at a quilt guild I was apart of at the time made fun of me for doing so many. I don't care they were fun to do.
