it's the best way I think, they come out beautiful. I would do black with yellow and gray rings and soft yellow
corner triangles hope this helps. You don't have to make a pieced ring, I make solid ring with colorful fabric looks great..

May want to ask what shade of gray and yellow or a variety.

I would collect all I could, but I would go towards the pale or creamy yellow instead of a bright yellow. Just my opinion.LOL

I know that it is not a DWR, but you can see the fabrics and how that color combination works. HTH

I'd probably use the yellow as the background and the black to gray as gradations in the wedding riings.

I can visualize a really pretty one using the very pale yellow for the background and a brighter yellow and a medium gray for the four patches at the intersections and then a random variety of yellow and black/black and yellow prints for the slices of the rings.
I think you and she both would be very happy with one done this way. Kind of a cross between traditional and modern.

My oldest DD is finishing up a DWR using QuiltSmart & the Lovely fabric line. She has never quilted or really sewn at all. QuiltSmart is very easy to use-I highly recommend it!! I can picture black/yellow/grey rings on a white background-beautiful!!

I think the shades you use should represent your daughter and future son in laws style and personalities. Is she the type that goes for light, pale type colors ( go with the pale greys and yellows ) or does she prefer bright, vibrant with high contrast ( go with the vibrant high contrast ones ) ? You want them to use this quilt in their home , so take them and their styles and tastes into consideration as well.

I made a friends daughter a wedding ring quilt in black, turquoise, white. Turned out really pretty. And ONE red piece in memory of her sister. This red piece was a surprise to her.
