Wedding Ring Quilt .....help with color
 

My daughter is getting married next year and I want to start on a quilt for her...the wedding ring. My problem is this...I asked her what co!or quilt she would like if it was to be one to have forever and ever, queen size for her bed. Her answer was combo of black, gray and yellow. Help!!! For a wedding ring? What or how do I do that?? First of all, the idea of the quilt being a wedding ring scares me and now she gives me these colors. I was hoping for ivory tone on tones or something on that order. Simple but elegant. Any ideas???

Start by looking at fabrics with those colors. Once you get the idea of the colors together it is easier to figure out how to put them in the DWR. You might consider the gray for the melon and center and the black and yellow prints for the rings. These are just suggestions and others will have more.

I love the black/grey/yellow color combination and I think it would look lovely.

I see one with alternating black rings and yellow rings on a background of white (you can easily substitute grey).

First I guess you have to figure out if you want each ring section to be one piece of fabric or several. I think black and yellow rings on a grey background could be great.

Don't be scare of the pattern. The Quilt in a Day version is easy as pie. I believe there is a free video on the website under the Egg Money Quilts section.

http://www.quiltsmart.com/Pages/mo_double_wedding_ring.htm it's the best way I think, they come out beautiful. I would do black with yellow and gray rings and soft yellow corner triangles hope this helps. You don't have to make a pieced ring, I make solid ring with colorful fabric looks great..

I made my daughter's DWR queen size in brown and peaches. It turned out super. I made it in three months, sent it to my Amish friend and she quilted it and bound it for me. My daughter got engaged at Christmas and they set the date for May. The quilt was done in time for the shower. I used the templates (hard plastic) for each little piece and had no trouble at all. When you attach the melons to the rings, just pin the centers and then it works out. I cut a lot out at a time, like all the melons, etc. After you cut the pieces out, use paper plates to separate them, to line them up to sew. Go for it, and have fun. Make sure you get that label on. In fact, besides the label, I embroidered their date and names inside the center 3 melons at the bottom of the quilt. I used white or ecru so when you look at the quilt, it does not jump out at you. Because you asked your daughter about her color preference and she answered clearly, I think you should go with the black/gray/yellow. Those who've already responded have given you wonderful ideas for doing this.

As you probably know, the black/gray/yellow scheme has been VERY popular for weddings the past several years. In time, the combination will become passé and the quilt will look "dated". But at least it will reflect the time of her wedding, rather than someone else's. And whatever else, she requested the colors.

When my 2nd daughter got married, she wanted blue and yellow. As time passed, they decorated their home, Primitive Country, ( He makes his own furniture, has a big cabinet in country Sampler Mag.) Any way that quilt just did not fit. They have lots of antiques too. So for Christmas this year I made them a new quilt. Im sure her quilt will be beautiful and she will love it, but everyone likes change, so be prepared to make her another one later on.

If she really wants those colors, my opinion would be to rethink doing a wedding ring. It is a difficult pattern let alone if you are doing a very large quilt. I have seen a lot of Wedding Ring quilts and I can't see this old design working with modern colors. I would certainly include her in choosing a quilt pattern. Make her a double wedding ring as a table runner. Keep it simple because you are going to be quite busy as the mother of the bride. Vest Wishes !!
