I started my "dear Jane" quilt today :) I am hand piecing and hand quilting.. not sure if i will do the tedious little sashing in middle tho... My DH ran out to WalMart and bought me the biggest thing of freezer paper they had for it Ha ha. I will be making "dear jane" while waiting for my son in his speech, occupational, and physical therapy for his sensoray disorder. He gets 3 hrs of therapy a week at once so alot can get done! I started it today piecing it today at his session and I got a few weird looks but... I soo do not care cause while they are on their phones and looking at books and magazines at I will have something to show for my time lol.

Keep us posted on your progress with pics. Kudos to you for using your time in this wise manner. Thanks for sharing.

It's always a good thing to have take along projects to work on during "wait" times. I often have someone asking about what I am working on, and showing much interest. At least one person is doing a GFG now because she saw my work in progress. She had never sewn a thing before! It was fun getting her started, and I made a new quilty friend!

jrhboxers 10-14-2011 10:05 AM

You might look into getting some letter size freezer paper. I know that it is a god-send with my DJ and a couple of others. It can go through the printer just like copy paper. There are several places that you can buy it on-line. I found the cheapest at C. Jenkins & Co.

http://www.cjenkinscompany.com/C_Jen...rsheets200.htm

You can get priority shipping for $12 so less than $40 for 22 sheets. And I gladly pay for the convenience of having the right size to use the copier feature on my printer. JMHO

Good for you. Don't let those funny looks bother you. I took my swedish weaving or my embroidery to my DH's chemo sessions. I got funny looks at first and then people would come over to check out how my projects were progressing by the week. Sounds like you and your son will benefit from his sessions. :)

Kristin in ME 10-14-2011 10:11 AM

Yay! Congratulations! What colors/fabrics are you using? I started mine recently as well- 2 blocks down, a LOT to go! lol

Lacelady 10-14-2011 10:18 AM

Good for you. As I am now sleeping under mine, I know you have a way to go yet, but perseverance will get you there. You might want to check out the thread we have on the board:

god bless you, your husband and your son.

My guess is most of the folks aren't really giving you 'wierd' looks; they are curious and have nothing else to do!

As Tropical says, people will start checking on your progress, which means you're creating the opportunity to make friends!

babyboomerquilter 10-14-2011 11:48 AM

Sounds like fun! Let us see the finished quilt! I know it will be awesome!

jljack 10-14-2011 12:09 PM

I admire ANYONE who attempts a DEAR JANE!! I just do not believe I would have the patience. No way!!

JanTx 10-14-2011 12:41 PM

Good for you! I took works in progress to my husband's appointments before and after multiple back surgeries. Had such fun conversations as a result! Made the time pass so much faster, too.

AliKat 10-14-2011 12:55 PM

I love your positive and creative use of your time. I am sure your whole family and friends, too, will see the how positive you are.

I love your positive and creative use of your time.

When I had an active medical practice I was able to get several of my patients reading more. As they found out I was an avid reader they would bring their books to our appointments and then I'd make a point to briefly discuss with them what they were reading. The waiting room discussions were a hoot too.

Maybe you are just the inspiration for a budding quilter is looking for
.

What is a "dear Jane" quilt?

Luv Quilts and Cats 10-14-2011 01:25 PM

I believe the blocks come out to be either 4" or 4 1/2" There are books and software to make this quilt and it gives you the history of the quilt.

mtnative 10-14-2011 02:53 PM

Well, certainly the others waiting you are not quilters. Now if I had been there, we would have been friends quickly and had a myriad of things to talk about. Then again ~ you probably would not have accomplished a lot. I will be anxiously awaiting pics of you progress.

quiltstodo 10-14-2011 02:57 PM

Can't wait to see your progress. I am just starting mine this weekend.

Thanks! It did show a picture, but no history, etc. Maybe I can google it and find out. But ... all I can say is ... "Oh my!!!"

Sounds like a great use of time to me as well as productive.
Cell phones are so over rated. LOL

sewingmom3 10-15-2011 02:50 AM

Good for you, that is how I got my Cathedral Windows quilt done-took me a year, sitting waiting for kids in lessons.

DMotyl 10-15-2011 03:00 AM

What a great use of your time. I pray that your son is able to improve with all that therapy. Keep us posted on the progress.

ka9sdn 10-15-2011 03:58 AM

Enjoy your piecing while you wait, just think of all the time you are not wasting but making something beautiful.

Glad you found something to do while waiting in waiting rooms. My mother taught me that "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" so I always had handwork to do, usually knitting. I made a lot of sweaters during the kids' teenage years. Then when my husband was visiting many doctors and having treatments I crocheted a tablecloth. It started lots of conversations. One time a man was sitting across from me and had to come over and get a close look at the motifs. His mother crocheted, and he started a flood memories. He then thanked me for allowing him to reminisce.

good for you...however, do NOT skip the sashing at all..it plays a vital role in keeping those blocks looking right and not all mushed together and half askew!

sandpat 10-15-2011 06:06 AM

Congrats to you! I enjoyed working on mine in bunches and bunches of waiting rooms. It sure is a conversation starter :D. Do check out the Cyber sew for Jane if you need some help, inspiration or someone to whine to about a few of those little blocks..LOL! Feel free to post your blocks on the block threads for the cyber sew!

I'm showing my Jane this weekend...I feel like a nervous Mom!

Thanks! I do want to find some sites dedicated to those hard blocks! I'm doing the easy blocks first lol

I have a quilt top that is being embroidered and that's my "take along project". It's been everywhere from doctors' offices, to the hospital when I stayed with my SIL, on vacation and when taking a day trip. I even work on it in the car. It's been a work in progress for years now and one day I hope to have it finished. I'll be keeping your son in my prayers that his therapy goes well. Good luck with your quilt and hope you'll post pictures as you go along.

Wow I kept wondering what a Dear Jane Quilt was and so I happened to click on the info someone posted and saw the pic of the quilt and WOW not only is it beautiful I saw one yesterday at the quilt show in Portales just like it and fell in love with it........never knew it was called a Dear Jane Quilt. The pics here are awesome but seeing it yesterday was awesome too...........also took a mini session at the quilt show on how to make circles that is now what it is called but it is about making a block that has a circle in it and sewing on a curve I have SEW many ideas for doing it that I hope to get one block made this weekend to see how it works. The lady, Linda Custer, put on a very good demonstration. I LOVE QUILT SHOWS!!!!

jansquiltn 10-15-2011 06:59 AM

Good for you. I always have to keep my hands busy. Couldn't tell you how many years I spent on the sidelines knitting/drawing/calculating yardage for my nex quilt. I agre we need to have something to show for our time.

Joan 10-15-2011 07:53 AM

Most people who give you "looks" in this kind of a situation are just curious. Some of them, I believe, are probably jealous they don't have a project to work on.......

Good luck, I can't wait to see the results.

(And having been a Sp. Ed. PreK teacher hope the therapy sessions with your child are helpful....)
