I read all the time about lap quilts. What I have been thinking about lately is something more like a quilt shawl that one could wrap around themselves when they lay down or while they are sitting or walking around.
It would need to be more rectangular than square, I would think. And probably lined with something soft and warm. Perhaps flannel or fleece? I just keep thinking that if one is not confined to a sitting position, a shawl-like quilt would be more adaptable in the long run. What are your thoughts on this everyone? |
I know as a nurse I am always wrapping blankets around peoples shoulders, they always say that it makes them more comfortable.
|
Try Moda Bake Shop. I saw one there last fall.
|
I think those would be very nice :D:D:D
|
I think they would be a great thing to make as I know for myself I wear a shawl all evening around here, and love them.
Thanks for the ideal :D  |
I love the idea...if you make one, be sure to send a photo ao we all can get ideas
|
They used to have patterns for bed jackets. I made one many years ago for my sister. They were quilted and nice and warm while sitting in bed reading or whatever.
|
This might sound crazy, but what about adapting a tree skirt pattern? You could change the keyhole center to a large teardrop shape that blended out to the outer skirt edge... Clear as mud right? Maybe leave out a wedge/gore to cut down on excess fabric hanging around bottom...
Just a thought. Sorcha |
This looks very comfy. On my long to do list someday :-D

might be nice to put on a couple of big pockets as well to carry some of those things that we chilly people need..tissues, a book, cell phone, etc. just a rectangle on each side of the front opening would work - if you put them inside the wrap, the wearer could put their hands in the pockets and keep the wrap closed at the same time.
|
I like this idea. I know my mom would enjoy one. I've bought her bed-jackets in the past. Actually, on our chilly sunporch, I wouldn't mind one myself. Thanks for posting that link, EasyPeezy.

I think it's a great Idea! Doesnt sound like it would be to hard... :)
|
What about a Kimono style with the sides sewn together so it wouldn't be sliding down the shoulders?
|
Maybe make it with arm holes also.
|
I would think it should be soft and *pliable* as opposed to stiff...kwim? Soft and cozy so it could be tucked here and there and not let those nasty drafts in. :)
|
I'm wondering if a flannel backing was used, if it would sort of kling and stay in place.
Be careful cooking with the extra fabric in the front, would be real easy to catch fire. I may need to make myself one:) |
There is also a book called 'Quilted Prayer Shawls' or something like that. I have it, but can't get to it. It is along the same lines as a crocheted prayer shawl, but this is warmer and men like these.
They are rectangular and a bit wider than say a runner. |
I was thinking about making Prayer shawls. Possibly triangle or rectangle. I would love one for church!
|
My first thought was also a quilted prayer shawl.

http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/08/...fort.html#more Thank you! I know two people in my family who would love that. |
Gosh, gee, golly and here I though I had thunk this up all by myself. I totally love the idea of pockets for stuff and/or warming hands. I really want that soft drapey look and feel, so I'm actually thinking about using flannel on both sides. Or maybe flannel and fleece.
OH, Oh, oh.... I could put a pocket in the back for my heating pad to go in. LOL... ok, maybe that's going a bit too far. LOL Hugs and smiles all. Let's see some photos from anyone that follows thru on this one. |
The Mexicans have beat us to this idea. Or was it American Indians first? Anyway, someone here suggested a shawl with holes in the ends and knitted wristlets. And I have a long one with pockets on it and it is the best one I have. Must throw it out soon because it is shabby, but still comfy. I'll have to make another and a spare for my sister who is also cold at night sitting reading or watching TV.
|

----------------------------- Now this idea I like a lot. And there's no rule that says it couldn't have inside as well as outside pockets. When I get my hands on fabric and sit in front of a sewing machine, anything goes. I simply ignore the quilt police hammering on the door. |
I think its a great idea. I would like one myself. Thanks for the idea.

Like a quilted snuggie?
I actually make a lap blanket/cape for my son who uses a wheelchair--it's sized to tuck in all around him but leave his arms free. But I've not made one that is quilted, exactly, because in our climate, a fleece and gortex combo works better. RST |
What a neat idea. If someone makes one I hope they will post pics
|
Oh no! What have you started? Next we will see the quilted shawls on TV infomercials replacing the snuggly. What will they call them? Quallies? Shwuilts?
|
sounds like a great idea...I keep my house quite cool and it would feel really good to have that over my shoulders...what about lining with something like minkee...that would be really snuggly!

During the 70s energy crisis there were things called Snug Sacks. They were just quilts that had snaps all along the edges. I made them for all of us since I kept the house pretty chilly. They were better than Snuggies because your back didn't get cold when you got up. And they could be used as a cover if you wanted to. I made one for my DIL last Christmas and she loves it. The smaps are placed so that it came over the shoulder and made sleeves. I may have to make me a new one.!!

It seems like a saw one in the Simplicity pattern book in the craft section. It may have been included in a pattern with other walker or wheelchair accessories. The nice part it didn't hang down. - just was like a little cape. There's no reason it couldn't be patchwork and quilted as long it was done with soft batting like flannel and not overquilted. I'd like one for me.
|
What about after the holidays we make this a project? Make yourself one and send in pictures. No contest but just to see all the different ones we come up with. Mmmmm...just an idea.
