quilts4charity 12-10-2012 03:57 PM

Oh my, I don't have a clue...but you sure got a lot!!!!

Crossstitcher 12-10-2012 04:00 PM

Make a yo yo clown or doll. Probably find a pattern by googleing.

cdmmiracles 12-10-2012 04:00 PM

I saw a yo yo quilt one time: someone had sewn the yoyo's onto long strips and then made them into a quilt, it was very cute. They had a yoyo strip alternating with a plain strip all the way across.

RedGarnet222 12-10-2012 04:20 PM

Find a nice coordinating piece of fabric and tack them to it where the circles intersect leave a seam allowance without the yo yo's.. Then make a pillow or tote bag with it. Then you will have a great memory item to remember the time together.

That's a lot of yo-yos!! I saw some patterns last week at JoAnn's for some yo-yo pets...they were really cute.
Sorry that your Granddaughter has Crohns. How old is she? My husband has it and has gone on a new medicine that seems to be helping immensely. There seems to be a lot of it anymore. Our daughter has the beginning stages of it and really has to watch her diet. Hope that your Granddaughter is better.

AliKat 12-10-2012 04:37 PM

I've seen a lot of different critters, clown, and things with yo-yo's. Maybe do a web search.

Of course you could also make them into a throw. It's not my thing but they sure were popular years ago.

You probably could sell them....just google yo yo quilts and you will see lots of ideas!

quilttiger 12-10-2012 05:12 PM

I just Googled yo-yo quilts and some websites came up. There is one filled with images of different yo-yo quilts...really neat pictures. Bet if you went in, you will find some ideas you can use. Good luck!

I took these pictures at Sisters this year, in the little grocery. These yo-yo's are sewn together without any backing or backing, so the quilt has "holes" in it.

J Hittle sewing supply has an adorable Christmas tree pattern using stacked Yo Yo's. It was in my email this morning.

I've seen that too--it was beautiful

I bought a big bag of yo-yos last summer at a yardsale...and i asked myself the same question! There is a paper in the bag with the number 780. That is probably how many are in there. There is also a stack of circles cut that is 3" high. The finished yo-yos are about 2" across.
A friend brought a yo-yo quilt to our quilt group last month for show and tell. It may have just been what i needed to decide to put one together myself. I had considered selling them, but i liked that quilt she showed.

Make a quilt with a Christmas Tree and use the yoyo's for bulbs, lights, or string them together for garland, etc.
I made a doll one time years ago with small elastic running through the body.

irishrose 12-10-2012 07:27 PM

I am planning a table runner with mine. I will never make enough for a quilt. My GD trimmed a purse with them. Two rows around the lower part. A wall hanging for your GD's room. My GD wants to mount some bright ones on black for her room.

rush88888 12-11-2012 04:00 AM

you could sew them end-to-end, and make a garland for your granddaughters bedroom - maybe around the window or hanging from the ceiling. that way grandma will always be with her.

On my nightstand, I have had for years and years, one that Mom made with leftover fabrics of dresses that she had made herself before she got married. I cherish it very much even if some parts ares beginning to tear at some places
She had done it just like Dunster describe, no backing or anything else

Vat 12-11-2012 05:02 AM

Make more and put them together for a light weight summer coverlet.

Jingle 12-11-2012 05:13 AM

I would applique them to a solid piece of fabric, put a back on it and tie in the center of each yo yo.

BeckyB 12-11-2012 05:28 AM

I would love a purse made with those colors!

miriam 12-11-2012 05:40 AM

Years ago, I trimmed a little bill brimmed hat -I sewed some green silk fabric around the hat edge then I put 3 green silk yo yos on the bottom of the center back, some button knots made of the silk (sewn in a long tube & tied) in the center of each yo yo and a hat pin to hold it on my head - I got a LOT of compliments.

DebbE 12-11-2012 05:44 AM

I liked the idea that cdmmiracles had....sewing the circles onto long strips of fabric and alternate with solid strips. You need to finish it up and give it to your granddaughter, labeled with the 'story' of what was happening while you were sewing these....it will mean a great deal to her in later years. You've got some great colors there....seems to me it will be a very 'happy' quilt when you're done. Looks like several different sizes, too, which will add interest.

miriam 12-11-2012 05:51 AM

My mom has a huge yo yo bed cover - she puts a green sheet made to fit under it down first then puts the yo yo cover over that - you see the green through the holes in the yo yo cover. It is beautiful and weighs a ton. It is done on diagonal - Green yo yos are all around the edges and then sections are boardered through out the cover has a diamond look. Nobody ever sleeps on it or lays on it or puts anything on it.

tildiemae 12-11-2012 06:00 AM

I'm making yoyos and when I get all 600 done I'm sewing them onto a quilt block in a circle with one yoyo in the center. It's a pattern by Kim Diehl. I just finished about 100 of them while sitting in the hospital with my son....they sure help take your mind off of the situation!! Thank goodness he's healthy and back to normal!!

solstice3 12-11-2012 06:20 AM

the sky is the limit. just google and look around. Dolls, ornaments, table runner etc

I was going to say the same thing -SIL an me seen some in a booth at a founders day fair and they sold like hot cakes at $20 a pop. They had fishing line attached to wooden handles to create Marionette Puppets. They were so darn cute

Lori S 12-11-2012 06:43 AM

Make a garland out of them and decorate your sewing room.

mjhaess 12-11-2012 06:47 AM

You might make a quilt or a throw....I made a queen size coverlet many years ago and still have it on the bed..

cwcquilters 12-11-2012 07:23 AM

I have seen a beautiful bedspread made with these and also place mats and a table runner. Good luck. They were sewn together by hand along the edge attaching one to another. Time consuming, but I don't see why it couldn't be done on a machine.

PKGranny 12-11-2012 07:23 AM

I was at a friend's house recently and she showed me a quilt in a bedroom that she called her "grandmother's room". It had vintage furniture, lamps, etc..... a lot of things from her parents and grandparents era that were passed down to her. On the bed was a yo-yo quilt. Her grandmother had taken yo-yo's and sewed them together. Looked like just a few whip stitches that you could see on each "side" of the yo-yo. It was on a double sized bed and she had a white sheet under that showed thru between all the yo-yo's. It was stunning. The fabric was very interesting to examine. Probably a lot of old flour & sugar sacks. Good luck and let us know what you do with it.

GrannieAnnie 12-11-2012 07:32 AM

You can make

Quilts
Coverlets
Bodices for granddaughter's dresses
Vests
Place mats
Pot holders
Picture frames
wall hangings
(and a few dozen more not coming to mind just yet)
or do what I'm in the process of-----------------------add to a sweatshirt for decoration

Yvonne 12-11-2012 07:55 AM

Here's a photo of my yo-yo quilt. I tied the yo-yos to a sheet.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ilt-t1959.html
Just wanted to add, this is not something you will sleep under! It makes a very heavy quilt and is somewhat delicate.

I decorated a t-shirt one year. I stitched the yo-yos on in the shape of a tree. That shirt sagged so bad. Those little yo-yos were just too heavy. Perhaps if I'd made them smaller!

MimiBug123 12-11-2012 07:56 AM

I would love a yoyo quilt! It looks like you're well on you way to having one. It would be very pretty. You could also make a table runner or placemats. Use them as "appliques" on baby quilts. There are endless uses for yoyos!

TanyaL 12-11-2012 08:10 AM

Trim a sweatshirt for that GD. Make a feedbag tote for her to match. Or make them for you and use them when you go and stay next time in the hospital with her. I find hospitals are very chilly.

nativetexan 12-11-2012 08:35 AM

you could cover pillows with them or tote bags. even doll clothes or bear's vests maybe. or maybe since it's xmas time, make garlands out of them..

I think the above idea is great! I google what I am looking for and then on the left side of the screen is "images" and I click on that and lots of images (pictures) will show up. I did a pillow using yo-yos for basket with handle and flower heads from I believe an old American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. Good luck!

So sorry to hear about your Granddaughter:( I've had Crohn's since I was 13- I'm 57 now, but in remission for the past 15 years.)

I recently saw a tutorial by Zena Thorpe where yo-yo's were used as flowers by stitching up through the middle and then around the outside, tighten a bit and do another section. 5 petals are the usual, they made pretty applique flowers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K4ckd5MlyY

You could make a heart shaped pillow and glue them on or do a lap quilt for her.
