I bought this beautiful seahorse fabric and a solid teal fabric to go with it and wish to make a 2 color quilt maybe even a sampler quilt? my question is I want to fussy cut the seahorse fabric to get the best parts out of the fabric but only know of one block (the square in a square) that works well with fussy cutting do you know of any blocks that would work with this or should I just look for 2 color blocks in general? I just really want to be able to see the seahorses somewhere in each block thanks for thinking about it

I would do a "snowball" block using the fussy cut seahorses, then alternate that with a "9 patch" block using colors from the seahorse fabric.

That is gorgeous fabric! Where did you get it from please? (I'd be too afraid to cut it up, so don't tell me how to get it. :-))

it is made by hoffman and comes in light teal too (which I also had to buy) I bought them off of ebay

Maybe fussy cut the seahorses. Then cut up both fabrics into squares and piece them together. Then applique the seahorses onto the top and borders?

Or fussy cut some of the seahorses, make a hunters star top, and use the seahorses appliques in the border.:D:D:D

Make a Log Cabin Block, with a big square center featuring a Seahorse. You will only need two strips around (8 pieces) to make it the size you want. If you have a small square with a really little Seahorse, you may need 3 strips around (12 pieces).

crafty gal 07-25-2011 03:22 PM

gorgeous fabrics! what about this?

That is gorgeous fabric! I love it! How about an attic window? You could fussy cut the sea horses and put them in the attic window.

I love seahorses! Can't wait to see the quilt you make!

Well, you could send that beautiful fabric to me and I will come up with something to do with it!!!!!

Hoffman, I wonder when it was made.....

Same here. I'd have to look at it a while before I even thought of cutting it. That's beautiful!

I like the snowball quilt with the 9 patch idea. Or make a jacket for yourself....A Little Something Jacket is a nice one and easy to do.

k3n 07-26-2011 03:19 AM

Wowzers! That is exactly what I need for a border for my seahorse log cabin! Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you better than those others have made. :-D

caspoohbear 07-26-2011 04:46 AM

I think the Kathryn wheel would look neat, but depends on what else you'd do. similar to storm at sea.

Paisleyc 07-26-2011 04:58 AM

I took a look at this website--thanks--it has a lot of good info.

sewmagic 07-26-2011 05:03 AM

Look at Kaye Wood's videos, she does a lot of stuff with fuzzy cutting.

lynnsim 07-26-2011 05:20 AM

Sorry, I don't have any new suggestions. but I did want to thank crafty gal for the link for the square in a square. I wanted to do this pattern; it has been so many years that I couldn't even think of the name of the pattern. You never know what you will find if you read in this site, lol.

Depending on the size of the sea-horses, Judy Cisneros' Patchwork Pizzazz method might work. She cuts rectangles and squares of the theme fabric (61/2, 121/2 sq. and 61/2x121/2 rectangles, if I remember rightly, and uses the remaining fabric along with her other fabric choices for nine-patches and occasional fill-in strips. It is straightforward (literally!) and you still end up with something original and personal. Can't lay my hands on the book right now, so please check those sizes.

I just purchased 3 yds of this from Hancock's of Paducah. I'm gonna make a sundress! SO CUTE!

quilter in the making 07-26-2011 07:11 AM

I think you've gotten a lot of good tips here and don't have anything to add, but that is gorgeous fabric. Too bad I just posted in another topic that I will only buy backing, batting and finishing fabrics. Good luck and please share pics of your finished projects!!!

You can do a star with the seahorse squares in the middle. BTW beautiful fabric -- where did you find it?

I also like the idea of cutting rectangles of various sizes of the parts you want to show off - and framing/filling in with other fabrics.

feffertim 07-26-2011 07:23 AM

I agree, the attic window would be great

AnitaSt 07-26-2011 07:30 AM

I vote for the snowball block with nine-patches. I'm gonna try to find some of this for my niece...she'd love it.

Whatever pattern you choose I am sure it will turn out great. Beatiful fabric. Not supposed to purchase for a while will have to put this in my memory bank for later. Thanks BrendaK

sahm4605 07-26-2011 09:01 AM

I would think that any block that has a square or diamond shape in the center would work well, just depends on how "fussy" you are willing to go.

It would make a really cute bow tuck bag! And you must really like seahorses, as I see in your quilt board name.

wildyard 07-26-2011 11:02 AM

I really love the churndash as a framing block for fussy cuts. It works great with coordinating fabrics!!
Here is the link to the board tutorial for doing this and it has photos too!

I would be one that would have a hard time deciding to cut the fabric at all. Perhaps make a grid to sew over the fabric to look like looking into an aquarium. ...or large attic windows.

I haven't read all of the posts, so I hope I haven't duplicated anything.

nativetexan 07-26-2011 11:08 AM

storm at sea pattern.

Eisgoow 07-26-2011 11:28 AM

Just a thought, maybe you could do a strip quilt with 5" strips, if that would be wide enough for the seahorse design to show. You could always do a wider strip quilt. The plain color and then the seahorse design. That would be pretty. Put the seahorse fabric on outside edge in a wide strip. then the edging with the plain color.

Many good suggestions. I like the idea of #1.Storm at Sea, #2 Attic Windows, or #3 Churn Dash..... all beautiful examples. Whatever you choose, I am sure you will do a beautiful job. And for goodness sake, post a photo of your work when you finish. I think you have a real big fan club!! ;)

starshine 07-26-2011 01:03 PM

you could also check out books with quilt block patterns your own or at library or from friends. Looks like lots of good suggestions here though.

kandee 07-26-2011 01:47 PM

thank you for this link. It is perfect for the quilt that I am going to make for my granddaughter.

bob1414 07-26-2011 01:53 PM

Hunter's Star perhaps???
