Can someone tell me what the name is for the quilt/blanket that covers only the foot of the bed? Thanks!!

Lori S 07-13-2012 12:01 PM

In my neck of the woods we call them bed runners.

Yes, that is what they are. I've made a few. They are great.

KimS 07-13-2012 12:48 PM

Thank you!

Pat625 07-13-2012 12:55 PM

Are they just decorative? Never saw one before

Bed Runners

What's the point of a bed runner? During the winter, I almost always keep an extra cover at the foot of the bed . . . but it can be pulled into service, if needed. It just seems a bit silly, to me, to have a "pretend" extra cover. :p

Neesie put my thoughts into words better than I could have.

I completely understand how in areas with colder weather this wouldn't be useful. I have plans though to make several for these reasons: 1) we have a king but I have no desire or time to make king sized quilts [bucket list too long and I work full time, 2] 2 dogs who like to get up on the end of the bed if you're in there during the day and bed runners are more easily laundered, 3] living in Florida I prefer a solid thinner bed covering with bed runners and pillows to reflect seasons, holidays or the desire to change color scheme. That's my plan now to get going on it!

quilter41 07-13-2012 05:40 PM

We call them Toppers. Really just larger Table Runners. I have one on my bed over the Matelasse Coverlet. I also made Shams to match. It just added some color to the Creme Coverlet.

DebLuvsQuiltng 07-13-2012 05:49 PM

I've notices some of the finer hotels also have them now. My thought was, it protected the bedspread from feet and also if you sit on the foot of the bed, it provides a barrier to the bedspread. Just a thought...

Toni C 07-13-2012 08:45 PM

I like the idea of a bedrunner for the changing seasons. Also for any and all holidays. I have a king also and like the thought of whipping up things to change looks around. Plus you could put orphan blocks together and then they could have a home without the big time commitment of a quilt. Also doesn't take up as much storage space when you putting them through their rotation.

slicksister 07-13-2012 09:09 PM

Same reason you make a table runner. It's pretty!

burchquilts 07-13-2012 09:14 PM

I always heard them called "bed scarves" & I figured they served a similar service as a piano scarf... to look pretty & be decorative... to liven things up a little bit.

QuiltnLady1 07-13-2012 09:40 PM

I plan to make some -- DH likes to lay on top of the bed with shoes on and it will keep the comforter clean. It will also allow me to have a change with the seasons.

That's a great idea - perfect for using up those FQs you bought just because you loved them!

Always called them bed scarf here also.......they protect the duvet cover and it is fun have different ones for holidays

Quilterdale 07-14-2012 03:17 AM

Knowing someone who works in housekeeping in a large hotel, I can tell you that people put their feet up on the bed without taking off their shoes. The runner is easier to wash than the big spread. Also, people have a tendency to sit on the bed to put on shoes or for whatever reason. The bedrunner is an attractive way to keep the foot of the bed clean without having to wash the spread. If you have dogs at home who like to get on the bed you may want a bedrunner to put across the bed where the dogs like to lie. Besides, they are pretty! That is enough reason for making them.

This is what I would use them for. It is the same protection that a scarf offers to the neck of a coat-easily laundered more frequently as well.

Hello neighbor!! I think I will now want to make a bed runner. Your remark about the dogs hit home for me...it will save my full quilt! I like the seasonal idea too!!

AnnT 07-14-2012 03:58 AM

I like them. Sometimes I just want a little more on my feet and they fit the bill perfectly. To me, it's a nice way to make a new pattern when I don't want to make a full quilt (and use up scraps!). I also have the dog at the foot of the bed issue..

mjsylvstr 07-14-2012 04:20 AM

If one likes to change the decor of their bedroom or for a guest room, these runners surely can do the trick...rather than going out and buying new spreads.........
and some people get cold feet and might just like the warmth of keeping their toesies warm!!!!

Latrinka 07-14-2012 04:57 AM

Just stayed in a new hotel that had bed runners. Looked very nice, and I guess they keep your feet warm!

PKGranny 07-14-2012 05:05 AM

I've also heard them referred to as bed rugs!!

I would think they are used for a decorative purpose, like a splash of color

Pam S 07-14-2012 05:32 AM

Now that you've all pointed out they're not just decorative but help keep the main bedcover clean, I think I just might make some. Would be a great way to try out some patterns when I don't want to commit to making a whole quilt.

This is precisely what I was thinking! I'd prefer to make a throw which can be folded at the end of the bed but still used as a light cover. Bed runners are attractive but I'm too practical, I guess.

Deborahlees 07-14-2012 07:15 AM

More for decoration, great in a guest room, can easily change for season or holiday....yes very much like a table runner and for the same reason....Decoration not service.

Teri D 07-14-2012 07:55 AM

That's my strategy as well. It's an easy, fun, and relatively inexpensive way to give a pop of color or seasonal fun to my neutral bedroom color scheme. Plus, I'm alone and already have more big quilts and lap quilts than I need. They are also quick projects that fit my rapidly diminishing attention span!

svenskaflicka1 07-14-2012 08:24 AM

i wondered the same thing, first time i stayed at a hotel that had them. but that night, i did use it like a quilt--i just turned it the "long way" on me, and it took the chill off perfectly. my cousin laughed at me, because all she wanted was for her feet to be warm--mission accomplished for both of us!

CoyoteQuilts 07-14-2012 10:00 AM

Kaye Wood calls them 'Quarter Quilts' and she has several patterns for them.

RugosaB 07-14-2012 10:21 AM

I like them with a plain bedspread. I plan on changing them with the seasons, but of course, that's only the PLAN LOL
IMO, only for decoration? Maybe, but I'm worth it!
We have a king sized bed, and making a runner seems much more achievable that a king sized quilt

Jennie and Me 07-14-2012 12:11 PM

I call them "foot warmers". My hubby was a letter-carrier(retired now) and I made him one. Made it big enough so that it drapes over the end of the bed. It is just a little something extra to keep the feet warm...plus it's kinda cute.

Carol W 07-14-2012 03:32 PM

Very nice for a quick project. They would be great as gifts.

patchsamkim 07-14-2012 03:38 PM

Love the look...just went onto bookshelf...and pulled off my Toppers book...and Toppers 2 to go through...would be a fun quicker project!

Greeter Eva 07-14-2012 09:01 PM

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada & I just use the same blanket summer & winter, but in winter I like to use another blanket over my feet. So I've been thinking of making me a Bed Runner.

tazzyMae 07-14-2012 10:08 PM

i use them because i'm dieabetic and my feet are cold even in the summer due to poor circulation and nerve damage. Their a little haveier than a sheet and not as haevy as a full size quilt.....please excuse my poor spelling

Besides the fact that they are decorative, I use them to add extra warmth to my legs when it is damp or cold. I don't like lots of covers but in certain weather my legs hurt very badly and the cover over them helps to ease the pain. (plus it gives my Shih tzu something to snuggle under)

Latrinka 07-15-2012 05:36 AM

Could call em feet warmers!

Byrdwoman 07-15-2012 10:52 AM

Called bed shawls or foot warmers. I like them cause they "pretty up" the bed. You see them a lot in hotels now. Made some and WANT to make some "seasonal" ones (Christmas, spring, summer, etc) to change the look of the bedroom. Made my sister (who lives at the beach) one with a beach scene and the "fat-fruit gals" on it and backed it with a pretty yellow/blue (sis's fav colors) so she can just turn it over.
