HELP! I love this layer cake I got on sale! But.... what to do with it??? Most I have two of each piece, a few only one. I definitely need a solid black somewhere. Any suggestions on what kinda pattern I could go with? I think something kinda funky since the fabric is a lot funky! :p

AUQuilter 09-16-2012 01:04 PM

What beautiful fabric! Look forward to seeing responses.

GORGEOUS Paula Nadelstern fabric.

All I can say it try not to cut them into very small units

lynnie 09-16-2012 01:13 PM

If you dont want to cut to much, how about doing a shaggy frayed edge. Ba k it in black, then you have all your goodies in one nice place.

woody 09-16-2012 01:16 PM

Send them to me :p I love them LOL

LTeachergeorge 09-16-2012 01:22 PM

How about a D9P? My LQS did a sample from a layer cake they call Disappearing Nine patch on steroids. I would put the prints in the corners and black and white in the other positions. Or you could cut it into charms and do a D-9-P. Let us know what you decide and keep us posted on your progress.

I think this would look good too. Another thought would be to use the blocks whole with black sashing. You could add some marbles, blenders, solids to the mix also. Pretty layer cake!

tesspug 09-16-2012 01:35 PM

10 minute block with black sashing?

BellaBoo 09-16-2012 01:55 PM

I love that fabric! What is the name of the fabric line? Looks like Kaffe Fassett's designs. Check out his patterns as he uses this type of fabric colors.

Pattern suggestion for your gorgeous fabrics

This pattern is free from BENARTEX. you can go to www.benartex.comand find the pattern. The name is DeNQvo. The large squares are 9.5"so your 10" sqs are perfect. You will not have to cut the lovely fabrics into small pieces. What do you think?

faykilgore 09-16-2012 02:15 PM

DeNQvo! I like it! I love the fabrics! That is a WHOLE LOT of funky!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 09-16-2012 02:50 PM

Have you seen the Missouri Star Quilt Company's tutorial on the double slice layer cake?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4

It could be fun with those fabrics or you could add a solid in with them.

Wanabee Quiltin 09-16-2012 03:02 PM

Is this Paula Nadelstern? I bought it from Mo Star and when I visited their shop, they had a quilt made just like I wanted. Black was used with it. The quilt was made with large stars. One layer cake made a star and the small cornerstones. I am making it soon for a 16 year old GS who is into bikes and skateboards. Good luck.

jcrow 09-16-2012 04:19 PM

Oma66's quilt pattern would be perfect. It's kind of modern like the fabric. Would look perfect. You need something modern to go with the modern fabric, I think. I took a class on modern quilting and a lot of it is empty space. Like you put your blocks in the right hand lower corner and then have black around it and in the empty space. I love that kind of modern look.

irishrose 09-16-2012 05:39 PM

I was going to suggest Seattle Streets which is similar to the DeNQvo posted above. Ithink that one is perfect for these fabrics.

mucky 09-16-2012 05:40 PM

I would also suggest the Missouri Star Quilt company double slice layer layer cake.

Jingle 09-16-2012 06:47 PM

I would not have a clue, too many prints for me.

jemma 09-16-2012 07:36 PM

oma66 has a great suggestion or just sash with black love the fabrics

salemrabbits 09-16-2012 07:45 PM

OH MY! that fabric belongs in my house! LOVE it, what is it?

mhollifiel 09-17-2012 04:06 AM

Definitely Potato Chip Quilt. Just stitch a 2 1/2 strip around each one. Use 2 or 3 solids including black for these. Sew blocks together. That way you don't have to cut them up. And it is QUICK!! Here's a link to some pictures:

Such wonderful beautiful striking fabric. I would just love it too. It deserves to shine in a big way. No small pieces. DeNQvo would set the fabric off, go for that!

How about Spaghetti Junction from Anka's Treasures"?
I love her patterns. This one works with 10" squares.

Lovely, I hear Jefferson Airplane playing in the background! Have fun with this fabric.

BETTY62 09-17-2012 04:28 AM

Awesome fabric. Love it.

AlienQuilter 09-17-2012 04:51 AM

That is beautiful fabric!

Have you checked with your local library? I just looked at ours online and was amazed at how many quilting books were available and quite a few were for pre-cuts. Needless to say I put a hold on two of them.

kymawmaw 09-17-2012 04:55 AM

kalidascope them? or wish I knew how to any ways

twinkie 09-17-2012 04:55 AM

Have you considered a 10 minute block using a coordinating solid color for the center diamond? That way the majority of all of the blocks would be shown. Just a thought.

Too funny!

My vote is for DeNQvo as well.

Why not just sew them together and go with the black inbetween the squares? It will be awesome! Tks. G

sewmom 09-17-2012 05:42 AM

It has already been suggested but I love the Double Slice Layer Cake. I made one and it works up fast. But i like the other one pictured too. Now you went from what pattern to which one to choose?

lizzieann 09-17-2012 06:06 AM

If you go to modabakeshop.com they have patterns for layer cakes.

raedar63 09-17-2012 06:21 AM

Great Ideas here ! Seattle streets is another free one that comes to mind , but is cut smaller and is very similar to the benartex pattern .

IdahoSandy 09-17-2012 06:25 AM

You might use them in a strip quilt or as filler blocks between a regular block.

10 minute block!!!!!!! No cutting if you make the it with 10" squares!!!!

feffertim 09-17-2012 07:45 AM

I just made this quilt using 10" squares and it was easy and fun, and looks great. You might like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4

GrannieAnnie 09-17-2012 08:06 AM

I love, love, love the pieces, specially the ribbon pieces. I'd find a layout that used the squares just like they are--------all 10" of each! Black would be a good solid to match

linhawk 09-17-2012 08:10 AM

double slice layer cake with black

PenniF 09-17-2012 08:35 AM

I know there have bee a lot of "don't cut them" posts --- but the first thing i thought of was kaleidescope! i think these would be great for that kind of dresden plate effect.

leighway 09-17-2012 08:42 AM

I was just reading an older copy of American Patchwork and Quilting last night and I saw a quilt I loved. Your fabric would work with it. Here is the link to show the quilt..it's called Thick and Thin. If you really like it, PM me and I'll make a copy from the magazine and mail it to you. http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/magazi...-2011_ss7.html
