What is the cut width of your binding strips?

Just wondering what width of binding strips you cut. I used to use 2 1/2. then for years used 2" and just yesterday learned that I can do 1 7/8" and it turns out perfectly on both the front and back. I am interested in what size works best for you

Jackie Spencer 04-13-2013 01:51 AM

I cut mine 2 1/4.

orangeroom 04-13-2013 01:53 AM

2 1/2" for me.

ckcowl 04-13-2013 02:37 AM

i prefer narrow bindings so often 2" (i seldom deal with 7/8" measurements); if binding a thick quilt- like a flannel one or one with minkie backing i may use a 2 1/4" up to a 2 1/2" but generally the narrower the better to me- i've used 1 3/4" and even 1 3/8" on small projects like placemats, tablerunners.

Same here. I always use 2 1/2".

QuiltnNan 04-13-2013 03:38 AM

i cut mine at 2.25"

charsuewilson 04-13-2013 03:52 AM

I use 2.5" for polyester battings, 2" for cotton battings. I use a little more than 1/4" seam, but probably not 3/8"

quiltinghere 04-13-2013 04:11 AM

I use 2 1/2" strips.

I always use 2 1/2. But I machine bind so I need the extra 1/4 inch!

Me too - 2 1/2

judylg 04-13-2013 04:22 AM

I have always done 2 1/2, smaller is tempting, it has been working so good, that I really do not want to change, might try it something small.

Joset 04-13-2013 04:30 AM

i have always used 2 1/2

DebraK 04-13-2013 04:31 AM

2 1/4 gives the finish I desire.

SuzieQuilts 04-13-2013 04:31 AM

I have come to the conclusion to always use 2 and 1/2 inch strips, because the left overs will work better in scrappy quilts and mondo bags with that size.

ghostrider 04-13-2013 04:47 AM

For me, it depends on the quilt. Larger, bolder quilts usually get wider bindings, so anywhere from 2¼" to 3" depending on the size and design of the quilt.

toolazy 04-13-2013 04:48 AM

It depends. Sometimes use a wider binding (2" finished width each side), sometimes a traditional narrow one, and sometimes none at all. Where it works with the pattern and fabrics, I prefer to either wrap the front around to the back or the back around to the front and make a 3/4" - 1.5" edging.

grocifer 04-13-2013 04:48 AM

I usually sew 1/4" from the edge for the 2 1/4th inch strips. Do you use 3/8th" for the 2 1/2" strips?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I always use a ¼" seam no matter what the width of the binding strip...even my 3" ones.

The difference is in how wide the quilt sandwich is trimmed after the binding is sewn on and before it's turned to the back. If you trim it to the finishing width of the binding, it all lines up perfectly and winds up nice and full. Using a wider seam can adversely affect the design on the quilt top (points especially would get chopped off).

1 1/2 here. Self taught. Did not know any better, but really a number of my works are wall hangings and would not be getting the work-out of a regular quilt. Even the ones that get used, are rarely in need of washing.

I agree, it really depends on the project. Sometimes when I need an extra something, sometimes even a extra wide binding does the trick so I sometimes even cut 3 inches before folding. What you can is make a tiny sample with the varies widths and see what looks pleasing to you. :)

grammysharon 04-13-2013 05:22 AM

Most of the time I agree!!! Sometimes for potholders I due 2"!!!!

I use 2" wide binding and I have no problems working with it.

pinkcastle 04-13-2013 06:20 AM

I also use 2 1/4". That seems to work for me.

thimblebug6000 04-13-2013 06:35 AM

2 ½" .... I hate the look of a skimpy binding.

mighty 04-13-2013 06:37 AM

I cut mine at 2.5

Jbug 04-13-2013 07:08 AM

I always do 2" to 2 1/2" cut strips. Yesterday I had a quilting teacher tell me I was all wrong I needed to use 3 1/2" strips to have stability. Oh well

What a silly statement for your teacher to make. I am just shaking my head. Lol. I use 2-1/2 or 2-1/4 depends on the body of the quilt. Guess we can decide for our quilt.

2½" for Jan in VA. Sew to front, hand turn to back.

bearisgray 04-13-2013 09:34 AM

Depends -

on how wide I want the finished binding
on how thick the batting is

patchsamkim 04-13-2013 09:58 AM

Most of the time I use 2-1/2" if I am machine binding, and 2-1/4" if I am going to hand bind, and 1-1/2" if doing single fold binding for hand binding. With hand surgery years ago, I only do machine binding on large quilts, and when I feel my hand is up to it, will do hand binding on a small project such as small quilt or table runner.

EasyPeezy 04-13-2013 10:13 AM

I used to cut mine at 2.5" but everytime I would have a few missed spots on the back.
I sew to the front turn and SID on front. T4 for my last quilt I cut the binding at 2 5/8" and
I'm pleased to say that I didn't miss any at the back. I can also say I made a perfect
(to me) binding with perfect miters.:):D:p:cool:

FancyFoot 04-13-2013 10:45 AM

2 1/4 for me

Prism99 04-13-2013 11:38 AM

I use 2" for cotton batting. Like charsue, I take a little more than 1/4" seam but maybe not quite 3/8".

quilterCDN 04-13-2013 11:38 AM

I have only used 2 1/2" strips for binding on a regular quilt. On a very small wall hanging, I use 1 7/8" strips.

grandjan 04-13-2013 12:36 PM

I'm so glad you posted this. I've often wondered how much variation there was. Mostly, I use 2-1/4, but it depends somewhat on the appearance I want on the quilt. If it's a wall hanging and I want a very narrow binding, I'll cut about 1-3/4.

Esmerelde 04-13-2013 12:41 PM

2 1/2. I machine sew to the back, then pull forward and sew the front. If I do a 2 1/4 then my machine misses stitches at the corners and sometimes at the binding joins.

ditto.
I tried those silky premade bindings from Joanne's and could not make them lay nicely. I need to use cotton at 2.5.

Grandma Peg 04-13-2013 05:38 PM

2 1/4" works for me.

Nammie to 7 04-13-2013 05:41 PM

Two and a half works for me too - that size allows a nice filled binding.

jokir44 04-13-2013 07:38 PM

I cut 2" wide for double fold bias binding and use a thin cotton batting. I find that gives me a nice full finished edge.
