I used to make teddy bears for people out of old quilt that they wanted to keep but couldn't part with but were no longer usable for quilts

I have one my grandmother made, my mother was going to toss it out, I said noooooo. it is hand sewed. I keep it in a plastic bag. sitting out. This way it gets no dust. I think the dust would be worse than the plastic. We live in NV, very dusty.

I remember reading a novel a while ago that some of the old silk contains lead dyes and will almost "shatter". I remember this because the book was called, "Shattered Silk". It was a good book, talked a lot about old textiles and contained a mystery.

How about making a duplicate to preserve the memory, then frame portions of the old quilt, of course with labels identifying the maker and the year? I have a very old, very tattered quilt made by my great grandmother, that I borrowed from my mother so that I could make one just like it. I will give the original back to my mom, and maybe she'll will it to me when she passes away...

Museums place tulle over the worn areas and baste them in place. That would work if you were displaying the quilt on the wall. Otherwise, teddy bears sound like a good idea.
