Since they are not square, you might want to stick with 4 patches. sew the 2 straightest sides together & square up.

You could do just 4patch. Look up radient 9 patch. It's lovely. The same thing could be done with 4p.

D4P

A border in turkey red, or navy.

Then chinese coins from your squares, then another border in same color.

Wow, can't believe this ! This last month have been working on similar pieces. Obviously, this lady had been thru the depression since fabrics were different kinds. I did 3 toddler size quilts and calling this last "LEFTOVERS".
Someone said my pattern is "Checkerboard" but I just layed them on table with colors that looked ok -then sewed into strips and put strips side by side.
Can't take photo of biggest as already gone to charity as will others. Good luck as this can become a real challenge as none are actually square.
Ha Ha ! Had intended to write about this when all finished.

I want to make a quilt out of them for each of her daughters, but have no idea in which direction I should go other than start sewing them in rows and go with it....I believe that I will have to trim them down to 4" squares to square them up and even them.

Any ideas for patterns that use 4" squares? Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have :)

Disappearing 4-Patch. Or maybe one I think is called a Lattice quilt with a narrow diagonal strip on each block

I had some like this that were out of square. I added framing borders, then trimmed all to the same size. You can't even tell they weren't square.

I did the same thing and no you can't tell.
