What to do With 199 yards of Flannel

Well, I found a pretty good deal on really nice flannel. $1.00 a yard and great manufacturers. I could not help myself :-) 36 different designs, some for children, a lot of designer style too. So,after the obvious sleepwear, and clothing items, what else can I use it for? I can make napkins and fun tablecloths, but what else can I use it for? The lady had 500 bolts of high quality flannel that she does not want to use any more, she has a shop on Etsy and sells aprons. She also had..approximately 2,000 bolts of nice cotton fabric.(not for sale, (!!!XX@@!!!) Any suggestions will be appreciated.

WOW 199 yards of flannel! Looks like you will be busy for awhile. How about some lined Christmas stockings for the holidays? Maybe some placemats? Rag quilts?

RedGarnet222 11-06-2011 07:11 PM

Depending on how wide the yardage is, you could make sheets or pillowcases. I am pretty sure if you wanted to and the colors won't show through, you can use it for a light weight batting inside tablerunners or summer quilts. Make sure you shrink it first though! Curtains, tablecloths, childrens toys, lining for light weight jackets or children's pants for winter.. Most anything you use cotton for.

I would look though a pattern book and check the fabrics they reccomend. That would give you a good idea of what kind of patterns to buy or use.

Flannel, hmmmm? Rag or chenille quilts of course as Irene mentioned. Receiving blankets, burp cloths, the back for lap quilts (flannel keeps them from slipping). One of the magazines I bought has a cute chenille scarf. They used cotton but flannel would be even better. The magazine was McCall's Quilting, November/December 2011. Article and instructions under "Chenille Chic"

SouthPStitches 11-06-2011 07:17 PM

I just made a winter curtain valance with flannel. Very pleased with how it came out. But what to do with other 198 yards?! That's a whole lot of nice shirts going on.

SouthPStitches 11-06-2011 07:19 PM

Another thought - E-bay some of the yardage. You can recoup some of your investment and put any profit towards Christmas.

jaciqltznok 11-06-2011 07:24 PM

you can make chenille out of it...also use it as the lining(batting) for summer quilts, totes, table runners, etc...
and don't forget baby blanket backings!

Keep Them In Stitches 11-06-2011 07:35 PM

Since it is really nice flannel, back your quilts with it. IMHO

OMG - Where are you going to store 500 bolts of flannel?

ging10ging 11-06-2011 07:47 PM

I've seen some pet coat's made from flannel. I know it's nice flannel but a $1.00 a yd isn't bad to use for anything and maybe you could make some money making them. Rag quilts are also very nice in flannel and of course baby things. Good Luck. Sue

lynnegreen 11-06-2011 07:52 PM

What about ripping some of it down and crocheting rag rugs, especially for the bathroom? Or emergency blankets for the car(s)? What about making donation covers for local shelters?

Colbaltjars62 11-06-2011 08:50 PM

Or you could offer some up for sale here on the board... I'm sure some of the ladies making quilts for Project Linus would buy some. Even receiving blankets for pre-mature babies or even regular newborns. Just a thought.=-D

Mariposa 11-06-2011 09:03 PM

You can use the flannel for quilt backings. Help use up that yardage! And it is great to snuggle under! :)

Tinabug 11-06-2011 09:05 PM

Dear Sue in Plymouth, CA I did not buy all 500 bolts, just 199 yards! Thank you all for the terrific suggestions. I believe I will make some into quilts for the children's oncology dept at San Digeo's Rady Children's Hospital. I also know several young moms at my church who could probably use some pajamas and shirts for the little ones. I need a new robe and I love flannel shirts. Also, I love the idea of lining quilts with flannel. Whew, I need get to work. Again, I love the ideas, I was just overwhelmed with the volumn of fabric I bought. I will probably have some left over and i will offer it up to the wonderful folks on this board. It's really pretty flannel. Thanks again.

Tinabug 11-06-2011 09:17 PM

This is a great idea for Christmas gifts for my dear friends. I will look for the magazine. If I cannot find it I might ask you for the article. I'll look tomorrow. Thanks again and have a super week!

I really like this idea because I just got all new windows and the kitchen windows are in need of valances, I have the perfect print for this little project! I would never have thought of this. I am going to try making myself a cute flannel shirt. Have not sewn for myself for many years. Thanks a bunch.

I made a nice flannel and Jean rag bag, its one of my favorite, flannel is also a great quilt backing. Slippers. Book cover would be nice. Oh the possibilities with so much flannel.

sewbeadit 11-06-2011 11:37 PM

Quilts, pillow cases, batting.

montanajan 11-06-2011 11:38 PM

If you run out of ideas - just send some my way (LOL); I'm making things for a new grandbaby due in 2012.

BETTY62 11-06-2011 11:45 PM

You can make lots and lots of PJ bottoms and wear them everywhere you go like the teenagers do.

sewingmom3 11-07-2011 04:14 AM

I agree-lots and lots of quilt backing, rag quilts, , maybe you can make some for charity.

itwrx4me 11-07-2011 04:21 AM

I just want to know what site you got this from! I've been looking for flannel for rag quilts - and can't seem to find much except for Xmas - not a lot out there to find for everyday items or children! And I've been searching everywhere online!

noveltyjunkie 11-07-2011 04:30 AM

Maybe an indoor play tent?

lynnsim 11-07-2011 04:34 AM

That is a good deal. I would also like to know where you bought from.

sandyo 11-07-2011 04:37 AM

wow what a fun problem, Toys are fun for babies out of flannel

alfosa421 11-07-2011 04:40 AM

how about a swap with others for different fabrics-baby blankets for project Linus are always good or the local womens shelter-If you belong to a guild have them help with donateable projects and such. Good luck and post pictures!!!

NUTMEG10 11-07-2011 05:33 AM

What I have done with allot of my flannel is make small quilts to donate to the Human Society or Rescue for kitties and small dogs. I make one side with cotton the back with flannel and batting will be anything I can find that is in-expensive like fleece at the goodwill store or thrift shop. Wash it and it works fine.

Delta 11-07-2011 05:54 AM

make rag quilts and give them to a shelter. or just make small quilts for a shelter or to just give away.

Quiltngolfer 11-07-2011 05:55 AM

I made a scrappy log cabin out of flannel. The centers were all red squares. I cut 2.5 inch strips width of fabric and put them in a big bag. Next, I randomly pull out a strip and sew it to one side of the square. Cut off the extra and rotate the square. Place the used strip in another bag. Take another strip out of the first bag. Sew, cut, rotate, repeat until you have desired square size. After all the strips are used from the first bag, switch bags and start over pulling out random strips. I did cheat by looking to pick out a certain color when I thought one didn't look right . I made 15 inch squares and it made up quick. Does this make sense? My kids fought over who would get the warm cozy quilt.

Murphy 11-07-2011 05:58 AM

These would make beautiful community quilts. Thank you for sharing your good fortune.

lillybeck 11-07-2011 06:01 AM

Sounds like some great suggestions. Right now I am using some flannel for batting. Thisgs are scarce this year and I had about 30 yards of flannel so why not. I like the thin batting anyway so just double the flannel and quilt away.

mymsmess 11-07-2011 06:07 AM

Wow, the nedless possibilities you all have given me for use of the flannel I have!

hobo2000 11-07-2011 06:14 AM

You can make some great quilts with flannel. Backings on quilts, placemat and napkins, winter sheets. Wow! I can think of 100's of things.

hheelleenn 11-07-2011 06:30 AM

Think she would sell some to me?

I have purchased several chenille patchwork patterns with various blocks using assorted colors. One is called Plumples, Chenille Patchwork with matching pillow -- Plumples is located in Garden Valley ID 83622, ph: 208-462-6778. Have another that I can't find right now, that I bought in MT with about 20 or so various patchwork blocks of scenic nature. The quilt was very large and handsomely done. With all that yardage, you could probably come up with a large assortment of individual blocks and not get bored with repitition. And chenille does use a good bit of fabric up! Have a ton of fun.

hoofmaiden 11-07-2011 07:46 AM

I just read on a tablerunner thread that it makes a good thin batting. I've also used it as a batting in a summer baby quilt.

just_the_scraps_m'am 11-07-2011 08:14 AM

OMG, are you kidding?
can you use all that in one lifetime?
i'd be banned from home if i ever bought THAT much fabric!
you'd better GET TO WORK!!!

Lynnejean 11-07-2011 08:15 AM

I use flannel to back all my quilts.

joyce blint 11-07-2011 08:28 AM

Since it was so inexpensive, it sounds like a great opportunity to make a charitable donation with a portion of it ----either quilts or fabric to be made into quilts.

green pen 11-07-2011 08:48 AM

Have you thought about selling some of it to the members here?

icon17 11-07-2011 08:57 AM

WoW! how in the world did you get it? What color is it? And yes use it 4 all of the above!:) And Make a Rag Quilt for Sure!!!
