Eleanor Burns Tossed Nine Patch. It is easy.

I am currently working on a YoYoville Quilt designed by Anne Sutton that takes 197 yoyos from 5" squares. I make yoyos while waiting at traffic lights, doctor visits, before church, during commercials, football practice, you get my drift? I think I am even making yoyos in my sleep sometimes. I currently have 142 and counting. Keep telling myself, almost done.... Then the construction of the quilt will begin. Love the quilt, hope I can get it completed. Important thing is to have fun with your 5" squares, I know I am!

I use a lot of 5 inch squares. Our guild had Pat Speth come and did classes with her. she has 3 books on using 5 inch aquares. She calls them nickel quilts. just google her and find her books many of the patterns use just one square and some need pairs. they are great fun.

skavanau 07-22-2010 06:32 AM

Look on quiltercache.com... many ideas by size of block to.

Thanks to all of you who have posted links on this board. They have helped me so much.

or if the pack doesn't have that many of any one 5" square; do a 9-patch or 4-patch using darks and lights

There is a book Nickel Quilts that is devoted to using 5" squares.
There's a Vol 2 also, not as good.
You can probably get it used thru Amazon

My sister-in-law just did her first quilt with 5" squares for her handicapped daughter....This was fun and easy for her. She just sewed the squares together and quilted "stitch in the ditch" and it turned out really cute. Now I want her to do a little more. Just don't rush it, if you start out to complicated you won't want to quilt.

dyer804 07-22-2010 08:54 AM

Thanks again for all of the wonderful suggestions. I can't wait to get started on something!

chrissy 07-22-2010 10:27 AM

You could cut them in half diagonally. Then make a pinwheel block quilt in any size you want.

MeMeX8 07-22-2010 10:30 AM

to klgreene
what a lovely quilt, I love the black/white/red combination! Looks like she did a great job! My brother lives in Clovis, the world just seems to be getting smaller all the time.

sltiffee 07-22-2010 10:55 AM

Ijust made the quitest disappering nine patch for my Grandadughters 4th birthday. It was fun and easy. I used 5" charm packs from me and my sister. I loved doing this quilt. Will show picks soon.

shortstack 07-22-2010 12:44 PM

That was GREAT! I've learned how to do hst so many different ways, but this is the greatest!!! Thank you!

steelecg 07-22-2010 02:25 PM

great for baby quilts as well as purses - Peggy Sturges has several bag patterns that use 5" squares

Debbie1 07-22-2010 03:16 PM

You can use them for almost anything. I love the precuts!

There are lots of books and patterns out just for the 5" squares. There are 3 (I think) books in the Nickel Quilts series, "Loose Change: Quilts from Nickels, Dimes and Fat Quarters" has lots of wonderful projects that work up from 5" or 10" squares, and/or fat quarters plus some yardage for some of them.
Carrie Nelson (Miss Rosie's Quilt Company) has a series of patterns under the Schnibbles line that are based on 5" squares. and so on.
You can also just sew them together in rows and join the rows. Or make 9-Patches, perhaps then "Disappear" the 9-Patches.
Depends on how many you have and what you want to do with them,

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS SITE..... IT IS FILLED WITH GREAT IDEAS... :)

Annz 07-22-2010 04:59 PM

I would find some fat quarters of some picture/scene or baby animal (I made an adorable baby quilt with fat quarters of penquins and sky scenes along side solid fat quarters) and cut them accordingly and place them in alltinating blocks. The quilt was one of the best looking I had remembered making and had to pass it off to the Mom very quickly so I id not take a picture of it and I regret that all the time. It truely was an attractive quilt.

schwanton 07-22-2010 05:02 PM

What about pinwheel quilt blocks! They would be fast and easy! Perfect for a baby quilt!

lynnie 07-22-2010 05:17 PM

how about d9p it's fun and easy and things go tog so quickly

galvestonangel 07-22-2010 06:23 PM

Go to Missouri Star Quilt shop and watch some of their tutorials, They show you how to do the diappearing nine patch, and a pin wheel block that is so easy. They may have some others but Right now my mind is a blank, getting to old!

Sheree from Chicago 07-22-2010 06:29 PM

I'm currently making a pinwheel quilt and it's pretty simple. I started out with 5" squares and decided they were too big for a crib so I cut it all down and blocks are now turning out to be 2.5 inches (2" when blockes are put together)! I now have to make over 250 blocks! LOL

BATmama 07-22-2010 06:56 PM

I have a bunch of 5 inch squares and I'm making an I Spy quilt.

Judie 07-22-2010 08:37 PM

oh my lucky you.. there are books and books that all start out with 5 inch blocks.. Nickle Quilts is one.. and More Nickle Quilts..

Since most of your squares are different, perhaps you could do a charm quilt..

I know you'll have lots of fun whatever you do!

auntiehenno 07-22-2010 09:21 PM

good ideas!

walen 07-22-2010 09:22 PM

Yup, I agree. These are perfect for 5 inch squares.

Read the posting disappearing 4 patch. It uses 5" squares, and it is really a pretty block.

Granny Peggy 07-23-2010 08:09 AM

You might want to look an one of Pat Speth's book like NIckel Quilts.

Quilting Nonnie 07-23-2010 08:27 AM

Ginnie 6, I would love a tutorial on the blocks you made!

Marylou 07-23-2010 08:40 AM

I recently bought a package of five inch squares, sewed them into rows and made a charity quilt. It turned out the perfect size for someone in a wheelchair and our guild donates quilts to the Vetern's Hospital for those who don't have much of a family at Christmas time. Marylou

dyer804 07-23-2010 10:48 AM

Again, great suggestions. I think I'll have to start one soon!

Mornigstar 07-23-2010 11:21 AM

I did a quilt-as-you-go (gayg) baby quilt from some 5" sq
but I used equal number of white with them. Very easy.
they look like a triangle after and color placement not a concern. There are many choices for that size sq's.

gertz 07-23-2010 06:03 PM

I used mine in a quilt called "Bricks" You cut 2" off the 5" piece and these are used in the border. The 3" pieces are sashed in black tone on tone. Google the Bricks quilt pattern. It' really pretty.

distar2 07-23-2010 06:47 PM

favecrafts online has a nice quilt using charm squares called a charming quilt. i saw it made up in a quilt store with all christmas fabrics that were one of a kind charm squares. it is very simple but looks very nice. :)

Jingle 07-23-2010 08:02 PM

I have a quilt book that uses the 5" blocks, called Nickel Quilts and there is another, name something like more Nickel Quilts. One day I am going to make one, they are scrappy and the 5" squares are cut, some squares, some triangles. I'm trying to make matchy, matchy quilts first, so I don't use off my large pieces of fabrics.

carolynjo 07-26-2010 12:36 PM

HI. I recommend the book"Nickel Quilts." It is old, but you'd be surprised at the variety of blocks included. There is a sequel to this book also. Have fun!
