dyer804 07-20-2010 08:33 PM

I have been sewing forever but am new to quilting. The fabric I recently purchased included a lot of 5 inch squares sorted by colors: blues, reds, greens, and yellows, oranges, & browns. What would be a beginner's quilt that could use some or all of these different squares? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

GrammaNan 07-20-2010 08:37 PM

I make tote bags out of these. They sew together very nicely.

Nine patch.. disappearing nine patch, four patch. Rag quilts

cjomomma 07-20-2010 08:45 PM

If there is enough of each color you can do a 9 patch. You need 5 of one color and 4 of another for each 9 patch block. Do a search for 9 patch, you will find many pretty quilts done this way.

dyer804 07-20-2010 09:03 PM

Most of the block are "one and onlys" with a few that have two of a kind. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming!

sharon b 07-20-2010 09:09 PM

Scrappy patch  LOL

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-20-2010 09:33 PM

Scrappy single Irish Chain !! can even snowball the full solid blocks so they round into each other.
Good Luck and Have Fun !!! :)

I have been using mine to make blocks for th Farmer's Wife quilt.
SOmetimes I need two squares of the same fabric so it can be interesting.
Here's a link for a great way to use them.

I had a whole bunch of squares like that and I just counted how many I had then figured out how many rows I coud have,by how many in a row.then just started sewing thwm together in rows, mixed up so hopefully no same colors together.then put the rows together then add a couple of borders, the first one maybe an inch wide the next one 3 inches,it came out really cute

moonrise 07-21-2010 04:13 AM

I'd do this (below), and make pinwheels with them!

Check out http://www.modabakeshop.com and browse "recipes" that use charm squares.

There are many interesting ideas out there. I am sure you will find the perfect project.

CarrieAnne 07-21-2010 04:27 AM

I have alot too! I love scrappy quilts, and getting the 5 inch squares means you get a great varity!

brushandthimble 07-21-2010 04:27 AM

I am working with 5" squares right now, making half triangle squares HTS
there are books out working with 5" charm squares, do a google and you should find something, all the group here will give you lots of ideas too, :)

GrammaNan 07-21-2010 04:30 AM

Wvdek-Fantastic tutorial, thanks for sharing.

ckcowl 07-21-2010 04:59 AM

there are a couple really good books out there called NICKLE QUILTS...they use 5" squares...thus the nickle :)
do a search and you will find lots of patterns for nickles...and charm pack books would use the same 5" squares because charm packs are 5" squares.
have fun, the sky is the limit!

oooh a 4 patch like this..its really easy! I'll be glad to post instructions if you want. I have some of these I'm working on to make a couch throw.

LoisN 07-21-2010 06:28 AM

Pat Speth has 3 books published with quilt patterns that all start with 5 inch squares. They are beautiful.

mlaceruby 07-21-2010 06:32 AM

Not a beginner project but I make mine into flying geese units. each 5" block makes two and then it gets real scrappy
which I love!

littlehud 07-21-2010 06:54 AM

I would just make a scrappy quilt. It will be pretty and colorful. Keep us posted what you decide to do.

dyer804 07-21-2010 07:30 AM

Thanks to all for the great suggestions! I will probably need more 5 inch squares to do them all!

Pick up one of Pat Speth's book Nickel Quilts. She does lots of fun things with 5 inch squares. I have made a couple of hers.

HeatherQuilts 07-21-2010 07:43 AM

Another suggestion is to sort them into lights and darks, and do half-square triangles with them, then arrange them into a pattern that you like. Something like this:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-40862-1.htm

Put a light square and a dark square together, (right sides together) draw a line from one corner to the other, then draw a dotted line 1/4 inch from each side of the line. Sew on the dotted lines, then cut apart on the solid line. Voila! You have Half-square triangles!
Now just press them open, and arrange them how you like.
Best of luck, whatever you decide to do. Make sure to post pictures!! :D

I am interested in the Farmer's Wife Pattern. Mariah

Beebee 07-21-2010 08:11 AM

go to Missouri Quilt Company and they have tutorials and videos that have all sorts of great ideas for you Charm packs I make baby quilts with them. Life is good!! Have fun.

hobo2000 07-21-2010 08:14 AM

They would make a great snowball quilt. That's easy and everyone loves them because they look so hard but are not.

hmay60 07-21-2010 08:23 AM

Missouri Star has a u tube for a dredsen plate made from 5 in squares. I made a wall hanging and am now making a larger quilt from my charm packs.

mrs. fitz 07-21-2010 10:44 AM

Hi DYER 804 - the video recommended by MOONRISE could be perfect for you, it's easy to do and looks great when put together. It's on page 1 here. I actually said "wow" when I saw how simple it is to make pinwheels and now I know what to do with some 5" squares I've been putting aside.

Don't be afraid to try something, you'll learn and enjoy, and keep reading this board. There's always something new.

navasota320 07-21-2010 11:50 AM

There are two "Nickle Quilts" books out. I have one but I'm not home right now so don't know the author. Some really nice quilts there.

This was going to be my suggestion. I think this way of making pinwheel blocks is so clever.

I had a bunch of 5" squares, charm packs, and after seeing this video spent today making pinwheel blocks. They turned out really cute and were super easy. I think I will turn them into table runners for Christmas presents. (or maybe a wall hanging for me!)

wvdek 07-21-2010 05:36 PM

Lookie at all the help here! So many fun things to try and do with those 5" squares.

I need another me to get all this stuff done.

jolo 07-22-2010 04:31 AM

I made a quilt many years ago with 5in sq. some repeats and some one of a kind . Put together in rows, made into a king size, picked one on the colors and put a border on. Then in one corner I appliqued a large bow with the tail down across the quilt. It was beautiful when finished it is my DDIL favorite quilt.

would you mind posting the pattern for this quilt? thank you so much Barbara

kkbrand 07-22-2010 04:54 AM

Go to www.modabakeshop.com and go to the Bakery section, click on charm packs and you can see all kinds of things you can do with 5" squares! I have made a pinwheel baby quilt from 5" squares

colleen1978 07-22-2010 04:58 AM

There is no end to what you can do with 5" squares! Put them aside and keep an eye out for a pattern or square that catches your eye or add other charm packs to them.

beginnerquilter 07-22-2010 05:16 AM

Make a Scrappy Quilt Block out of those 5 inch Squares.
