I'm going to the camper with my dh next week...at job site and need to take something to do. There's not enough room for my sewing machine what with the kids and all and it would probably just trip breakers anyway. I guess I could make more Sue blocks for the girls quilts and maybe a few Sam blocks for the boys...

How about some English Paper Piecing? I love my Apple Core quilting to take along.
Or Red Work for something different to do. |
Do you like to make yo-yo's?
|
I've never done paper piecing (and honestly am scared to try) and never done yoyo's. I will only have internet access in the evenings too when dh gets home.

English paper piecing is great. I haven't tried regular PP, but I take my English paper piecing everywhere I go. Give it a try. PM me if you have any questions.

I can't machine paper piece to save my life, but I can whip out some English paper pieced hexagons like no bodies business! lol I have a ziploc bag with three envelopes in it, one is for fabric squares, one is for hexagon papers, and one is for finished hexagons. Then in the bag I have a pair of snipps, a spool of thread, extra needles, and a glue stick. I tote this bag with me every where I go and normally keep it in the car. It doesn't take up much room but it comes in handy while sitting at four hour Girl Scout meets! I am sure you will find something fun to do! |
I keep a bag with a Cross-Stitch Quilt top that has been in progress for 2 yrs. for this very type of occasion. Doesn't require much room and east to grab & go. All supplies get left in the bag at all times unless I am working on it.

I do redwork, but I like handwork myself.

well I have more Sue blocks ready to be put together. I still have Sue quilts to make for my girls so I can take those with me easily.

Do you enjoy piecing by hand? I started making the hexagons from the plastic templates "Quilt Patis" and they are so fun to make and very addictive. Enjoy!

Have you thought about preparing machine appliques?
I trace a pattern onto freezer paper, staple about 5 additional layers underneath it, cut the shape out (makes 6). If you can bring an iron, you can then iron the shapes onto the wrong side of your fabrics, cut around them 1/2-1/4", then glue or paste the edges under. (I use Elmer's washable school paste and my finger; most people use washable glue sticks.) You can iron them again when finished so they lie flat. Once you get back, you will have about a zillion appliques ready to machine sew onto backing blocks. |
Prism-
not to hijack this, but what kind of stitch do you use to machine applique these? Width too, please. I may just have to try this. |
May I ask what is the difference between english paper piecing and paper piecing?

English paper piecing is done by placing your fabric on a particular shape of paper (usually postcard thickness) and basting the fabric on this after that you then hand stitch the pieces together, release the paper. Most of it is done with hexagons like Grandmothers Flower Garden. Foundation paper piecing is all done on the machine and I think Carol Doak is a master at that. I took her class many years ago and if you go to her web site you can check it out.
I did a queen size GFG using English paper piecing. I bought the shapes already per cut. |
