How is your relationship with the DMIL? If it is as bad as my relationship with mine just throw it in the trunk of the car. They sure are handy when you are having a skid problem. If you like her go ahead and quilt it for the sake of the relationship. Just do diagonal lines across it to hold it together and chalk it up to your good deed for the month.

Oh I love my mother in law dearly and the more the quilt sits on the bed the more I'm diggin' it! It's got attitude:))

Go ahead and finish it the best that you can and sometimes when she visits let her see it display or used every now and then. It will probably make her smile! Mind you, you would not have to display it all the time that way. You can always get rid of it later, if and when she has gone on.

I really like this quilt a lot. They have a certain sort of zaney charm that couldn't possibly be duplicated. Totally unique. I hope it grows on you. It's an unexpected bit of true folk art. Not controlled, not planned, not 'cutsey'. Just a great old utility quilt. Love to find one like it.

I really don't see the problem with it. My DGM gave me a ugly scrappy made of polyester and as much as I hate polyester i loved that thing to death it stayed on my bed for 20 years. I finally put it away 6 months ago. I think you should use as it intended to be used.

I think I'd use crochet thread and tie it. Once at each corner and once in the middle of the block. Either that or just loosely stiple it. I don't think it's a monster, just someone using what they had available. Years ago most quilts were made that way. Perhaps you could put in the guest room or if you really don't like it, finish it, put it in the closet and then just take it out and put it on a bed when she visits. I'm sure she thought she was doing something nice for you. If you quilt it you might want to put a light weight stabilizer on the polyester pieces.

To be honest, I like it just fine but I wouldn't use the border.

Sometimes quilting even an ugly quilt makes the quilt! Finish it. It will make your MIL happy, and thats always worth a few brownie points!
