Do you always give away, if so to whom and do any of you make for charity and if so are you more careful with the price of materials.

I would also be very interested what you estimate a decent size lap quilt costs you to make [ not including time ]

So far all the quilts I've done have been for family and friends. Once I get those all done, I will likely do some for others, but at the rate I'm going, that may be awhile.

It's really hard for me to tell how much any given quilt has cost because I tend to buy fabric as I see it in whatever quantity strikes my fancy (or my budget) that day. Most likely I'll use that fabric in several different quilts, for swaps, etc. so it's not like I've gone to the store with pattern in hand to buy exactly what I need for a particular quilt.

I mostly make quilts for my family. I have done a few for friends and a couple as gifts. The last queen size I did as a gift the materials (material, batting, thread, etc.) cost nearly $500. Quilting is not a cheap addiction. I have made some full size for about $300 materials.

this is a problem for me but I need to make so many more :roll: I get to the point that I have to weed them out...this summer have given away 4, 2 to LQS's GD's school for wheelchair patients and 2 to 2 to other people...I try not to think about cost...just have to try everything

I have no idea what it costs me to make a quilt.

Have been quilting and buying fabric since the mid 70s and have probably over 1000 yards (it's taken over every room and hall in the house except for the bathroom and kitchen).
Am in the process of selling off alot of it.
One of these days I'll list yardage on the Board.

Hi,I make quilts and at 1st was for myself and kids,then the grandkids,and some of their friends,then some for charity,and now I try to sell some of them.Grandkids get new ones every year,and my kids,lol.Nice to sell one every now and then to feed the addiction,lol.

You will know the cost of fabric etc over here and this is what curtails the amount of quilts I make and what I do with them. I buy my fabric on line mainly from one shop, and at the Birmingham quilt show, for the latter I save up and have a little spree mainly buying small amounts, less than half a metre. for the same reason my quilts are inclined to be hangings or lap quilts for myself, family and friends. Though I am now startng to make bed quilts which I will machine piece and hand quilt. Hence when it is time to make the next quilt I see what i have a go from there. My lap quilt size varies depending who I am making it for. A bit hit and miss I guess but no one has complained so far!!! I would not want to sell as the pressure would take the enjoyment I get.

When I first started quilting, I kept my quilts. I have about ten/twelve quilts for myself. That is more than I will ever need. Since that time, I have given away the quilts that I make. I try to keep a log of what I make and now I also log who they were given to. Last count, I have given away 32 quilts. I truly get a blessing from giving. I make quilts specifically for people and I make quilts just because I like the pattern. If I don't have anyone in mind when I make one, someday someone will see a quilt I have and fall in love with it and I will give it to them. You can tell when someone truly loves one of your quilts.

Have no idea how much a quilt cost.

I make small lap quilts for a nursing home and they will be about 38 in square or something close depending on the block size I use. I do not use batting in these and back with whatever kind of cheap flannel I can find. Sometimes flannel sheets that are donated. I then tie them. They are used hard and washed a lot so I don't invest a lot in them.

Most of what i make goes to my family-my kids and their spouses.I'm also saving some to give to grandkids as they arrive. I do give some baby quilts as gifts. Can't really explain how I decide who gets one as a gift, but sometimes I really feel drawn to give a certain person one.
I also make a couple simple quilts to donate to a charity auction every year,along with other handmade items.

I've made about 100 quilts and I have about half of them. I am running out of places to put them and have been thinking about giving some to some family members that don't have any. My cousins (7) of them are so good to my Mom (in TX). They visit her, take her out to lunch... I'm thinking of giving some of my quilts away for Christmas to them. 90% of the quilts I make are given to a nonprofit that gives them to widows or injured fire/police/millitary. The other 10% to family.

I usually make my quilts for family and friends. I have done a few I spy kiddy quilts which a "friend" asked me to do but I realise now I seriously undercharged for them! I am now doing quilts for injured UK Soldiers. I don.t like doing commissions as I can.t work under pressure or in colours I.m not happy with. I just enjoy making quilts and so far all are enjoyed by those that have received them.

Mostly, I make quilts for me. However, I am in the process of planning one for a young girl who lives next door. This one is an exception. I have made several quilts for others, including my grandchildren, my nieces and nephews, and my daughter. She has given one to my son because I won't give him any as he has cats. No more for my daughter or granddaughters though. At least until they graduate from high school.

The quilts I make for myself I just like to see hanging on my banister - which I change out every so often. I enjoy looking at them and remembering how much I enjoyed making them. It's a creative hobby just for me.

I make any number of quilts for the hospital in which my daughter works as a nurse in NICU.

I give away the majority of the quilts I make, to friends and family, and only recently a couple for charity. I like to do scrap quilts, though, and have only once bought the entire amount of everything for a quilt at one time. That was for my grandmother, and I estimate that it cost around $50 for everything, maybe less. It was a large lap size. Most of the fabric came from Joanne fabric.

Usually I only buy one or two fabrics just for a particular quilt, and the rest is scraps I already have, some of which are from other quilting projects, some from clothing projects, and some that others have given me. So it's hard to estimate cost. I'd say I've got around $100 in batting, backing, and sashing for the queen size I'm working on, more in the fabrics used for the blocks, but they're scrappy, and I have no idea how to estimate that.

I know I've made at least two quilts that were entirely from scraps or yardage that was given to me (and even batting) and the biggest expense was the fabric for binding.

Now that I quilt, I try not to make clothes out of fabrics that I wouldn't want to quilt with :)

I also tend to buy most things on sale or from remnant tables, thrift stores, etc, so that keeps my fabric cost down.

so far most of mine are for family and friends. i did make one for our volunteer fire dept to raise money. on the fabric it depends on if it is for a child or adult.if it is for adult and i know it will be taken care of i have spent $9/yrd for but for a child i try to stay in the $4/yrd area

I've only made a few quilts - around 20-25. They've gone to family members, an elderly neighbor, and about four to children in Nicaragua. I have none here in my home that I've made. Although I do have a few quilt tops without backs (destined for the Nicaraguan children); one for my granddaughter that I am almost finished quilting; and, one I made for my father-in-law that I inherited when my mom-in-law passed away. (and of course, the ones that I'm currently working on.)

I've never made a bed-sized quilt. Although I have made duvets and pillow shams. My quilts are all lap-size, in varying sizes. They've gotten bigger as I've quilted longer.

And the cost? Kind of like everyone else has said, I am a fabric gatherer. When I first started quilting, I used to buy lots of fat quarters. Now I don't buy anything smaller than 1/2-yard, although I do love those little guys. I do buy sets of pre-cut strips, and occasionally charms.

I have loads of fat quarters and I'm so happy I do because I'm always running to them to make little things, or to fussy cut to personalize a quilt.

my lap quilts are always about 60"x72"-80" (the guys in my world are all well over 6feet tall, so i make them long.
i pretty much give them away...to friends, family, charities. i may sell 2-6 a year. depends. as far as charity quilts,,,i do not skimp on quality fabrics because it is going to a charity, if anything i make sure there is no 'less than quilt shop quality' fabrics in a quilt i am sending away. if i am going to use any sub-standard fabrics they are going into the kids game/car quilts that get used to death and replaced. i would think it probably costs about an average of $125-$150 to make a lap quilt. i don't usually...most of my quilts are queens, an occassional king...for the kids, large twins...leaning toward fulls. if i receive (and accept) a special order for a quilt i talk to the person about what they have in mind and budget. i try very hard to stay within budget, if i dont think it's possible i let the person know it is not possible...and the bear-minimum i can do it for...like dog-gone game quilts...i love making them the kids love them...no matter what i do it costs me $125 to make one...not including any time. anyhow.....
my family gets most of my quilts...and some of them have very expensive quilts.

My daughter is a painter. We have stacks of canvases. Some great, some incomplete. I complete my quilts but I am happy to make stacks of them. I am not wealthy, but this is my art.

I make quilts usually for self and family. I also help piece and longarm quilts for our Project Warmth thru the Guild. So far have quilted 30 for them. The Guild I belong to does Project Warmth Quilts which are all made from donated fabrics. We have a work day once a month or you can do it on your own. As they are completed they are given to fire victims, pediatrics at the hospital, cancer patients, WAVI, Childrens home, soldiers that have been killed in action families and many other needs. It is not uncommon to give out close to 300 quilts a year.

I have made a quilt for each of our six children and two quilts for each of our grandchildren (14), a baby quilt and then later a "big boy" or "big girl" quilt. I gave our grandson and his wife a quilt as a wedding gift in July, so I guess I'll have to make at least 13 more before I die. I do hand quilting so I had better get busy.

I make mostly for Linus - made 100 for them last year and am well on the way this year - have donated 84 so far. I have no idea what it costs me for each quilt. I rarely buy $10 yd fabric My favorite are scrappy quilts. I love making quilts for Linus - I get to try all kinds of patterns and all kinds of color schemes.

Mostly I do gifts for family and friends, but I have done a few for charity, too. I use the same good quality materials for both. As far as cost, a queen costs between $400 and $500.

My quilts are usually given away as gifts. Just gave one to DIL who was headed to Houston for Cancer surgery. Told her that when she wraps up in the quilt, think of it as me wrapping my arms around her and giving her a great big hug. I do donate one quilt a rear for a raffle for our Relay for Life team. Have made over $1,000. the past two years. You'd be surprised at how many people want homemade quilts.

I'm just starting out so I am about 50/50 keep vs. give away. I do have a hard time parting with them b/c I usually do something I know they will like, but I also have to like it, too! ha ha! I mostly do scrap quilts so I don't know how much each costs - a LOT of my fabric has come from the remnant bin. The one I am making for my dad will be close to a twin size and all the fabric was purchased for it - maybe $100 start to finish?? Thankfully our LQS sells their fabric for around $5/yd. I didn't realize how good I had it until I went to a couple other places! Whew! They do it as a hobby, not to make a fortune or anything. I do know they shop around to be able to offer us those prices...

So far I have only made lap quilts and I give them to the local Nursing Homes for their patients. I am also making a regular size quilt, my first one of that size, for my niece who is a missionary in Africa. I have no idea how much these quilts cost because I use scraps, sheets and men's shirts purchased from thrift stores or yard sales. I plan on making some baby quilts for the local women's shelters or the hospitals.

I don't think too much about cost, although I always buy fabric on sale, or with a coupon. I look at it as my hobby. How much $ does my DH spend on golf? I don't add it up or ask and he doesn't ask me about what I've spent on material. It works for us.

I have yet to keep a quilt for myself. I either gift or sell. I buy mostly all materials on sale, yard sale, etc. The one quilt I did as an order from a lady, I spent over $125 on materials and that was on sale fabrics. Yep, quilting is not a cheap endeavor but the joy of sewing, can't get that in a pill.

I give most of my quilts away--of course I have lots to give too. 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and a great grandchild

I also make for friends and family. For the ones I just can't part with, I put on the label who gets it when I die. My youngest grandson always points to the one on the livingroom wall and tells everyone that it really belongs to him.

I make a lot for gifts. My family fights over who gets the next one! Everyone I know that has a baby gets a quilt, etc. Then, I do make some for charity, (Project Linus usually) and our quilting group at church presents a quilt to each baby that is baptized. I make some to sell and I even occasionally make a few for my own home.
The economy being what it is, I don't buy too much fabric lately, but I have had tons of it given to me by various friends and family, so I am currently working on my stash. And there is enough there to keep me busy for a long long time!

I make quilts for friends that are sick, or having a baby..I started out with making them for my grankids first...Then giving one to friends that were becoming first time grandparents...Now am making them for my grankids for when they are older, they can choose one for college...I make just tops for my ladies to tie at church to give away at Christmas time. I do a lot scrap quilts so they end up pretty much free as I do strip piecing for a lot of family quilts and scraps are left over

In NJ, there are many affluent people and many poor. We have many opportunities to get free fabric, then donate quilts to those in need.

I have made Project Linus quilts, quilts for our Wounded Warriors and quilts for friends who "need a hug"- one with cancer, one who lost her husband. These ladies told me they wrap themselves in the quilt when they need comforting.

That's something money can't buy!

I'm just beginning to accumulate. I've been sticking with table runners and toppers, making one for myself and for my daughter. I am now getting more into lap quilts and larger and I don't know what to so with them. I'm not good enough to give them as gifts but I can't stop making them. I am now looking for a quilt rack to keep and display my work, but I mostly just do it for me. My daughter says I'm addicted, I think she is right
