Do you have any quilting methods that are technically "against the quilting rules" that work for you? Anything from how you piece, applique, baste, bind, quilt, etc.
I machine-bind...or at least I plan to. I don't pre-wash. |
There are no rules in my book, I say do whatever floats your boat
|
I don't know enough about "The Rules" to know which ones I am breaking. You might say I am a Blissfully Ignorant Fabric Maverick. :) Of course, some would just say the first two cover it... :D
|
I mix stripes with plaids!
Sometimes, I don't close my rotary cutter blade the instant the cut is compete, but I do chide myself on that. |
As far as I am aware; there are no rules (smile). If there are, I have probably broken them all at one time or another!!
|
Yes, I am guilty of one rule that I break. I'll make copies of patterns...sometimes. I know, my bad!
|
I use white after Labor Day.
|
There are no rules, however-----
I don't pin as much as most, I don't always prewash, and I tend to make my own patterns vs following one. And If I do follow a pattern ---- I tend to change it. |
What rules?
|
I mix washed and unwashed fabrics in the same quilt! I know I know giant no no but it's hasn't messed up anything major yet ;)
|
I don't know of any "rules" that must be followed in quilting, but I was told, when I first started quilting that the binding had to be sewed on by hand. I broke that "rule" because sitting in the position for hand sewing is very hard on by back and came to realize that there is no good reason to hurt while doing what I love to do. Besides that, I machine sew my pieces, machine quilt my quilts, why not have a very nice machine sewn binding also. Mary

NO Rules.
|
Rule #1: There are no rules.
Rule #2: See Rule #1. |
I never prewash unless I'm dealing with red. And I always use the lines on my mat to cut. My mom would die...she always says not to use the lines. :)
|
I do whatever I darned well feel like. People like my quilts, but they only go to family members for the most part, are not going in a show.
I have been machine-sewing both sides of my binding, do not make bias binding, nor do I do that angled seam for my bindings. I rarely pre-wash, and don't miter my borders. I double-fold over my fabric when I cut it. I also mixed washed and unwashed fabrics because I used to prewash everything... |

don't know the rules, so don't know if I am breaking any... not worried about it either.
I figure as long as I and the recipient like the finished product... then who needs rules :) |
I am still on my first quilt and was not aware of any rules (ha,ha). Mine will be a learn as I go technique....glad to take suggestions, but nothing written in stone.
|
I iron rather than press, gasp! I've mixed white, tan, and ivory in the same quilt. I don't square up at every step. I machine sew the binding and now that I'm using an attachment on my machine for the binding, I use single fold binding rather than double fold.
|
Whatever comes around goes around.
|
sad to see so many say there are NO rules! There actually are rules, but they get ignored for the "I want it done NOW" set!
Those of who know the rules rarely break them, but at times, and they are usually while doing something crafty, not quilty, I will mix all the fabrics together while doing a load and just toss in the dye catchers instead of separating the colors! THere, I said it out loud! |
I make the rules as I go. Then, I don't always follow them.
|
Rules are made to be broken, I always heard!

I don't think I know the rules. What are these rules? Is there a list of them somewhere? I'm a self taught quilter who learned better ways of doing things from reading books, this board, and the internet but I have never seen any rules anywhere.

I think this thread is cute.
Don't think there has ever been a pattern I have followed to a T. I read directions, and am always thinking "well that seems a bit unnecessary" "why are they making this alot harder than it needs to be?" I will end up making it "my way" I like simplicity, and hate long winded directions. |
RULES?

What a rebellious group! Got to love it.
|
no rule, just guidelines!!!!
|
My grandma taught me to follow all the rules of proper methods for making a quilt. Then I found out all grandma's don't have the same rules. :lol

I "rip" out seams that are in error. I do NOT "unsew"!!!!!!
I rarely make bias binding anymore! |
