Last year, I took the fabrics in my stash that I couldn't imagine using in anything wearable or, frankly, in anything else and made cloth shopping bags out of them. I opened up a Walmart plastic shopping bag and traced off a pattern (adding seam allowances, of course). I made them with one fabric on the outside and another on the inside (basically double bags), so they are very strong. They hold a remarkable amount of groceries, etc. I am amazed at the number of compliments I have gotten on these bags made out of what I considered my "ugly" fabrics.

Keep in mind that someone else might actually love them. I really don't care for Kaffe Fasset's fabric designs but I know he is wildly popular and that many people think he is doing some of the best stuff in fabric design today. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. Take them to your quilt group and offer them up to whoever wants them. that way, you know they'll be put to good use.

Divide the bundles up and use the "uglies" with some "pretties" from your stash! Bet you will be surprized. I participated in an ugly fabric contest at my LQS. Didn't win, but I was pleased with the result.

Here's one way to look at it: There are no ugly fabrics, just inappropriate projects. Think about using very small pieces of the fabric for color. Poor quality fabric is more of a problem than "ugly."

As my friend, author and longarmer) says, there is no ugly fabric. She writes books on using charm squares and layers cakes. She said if a fabric is ugly, just cut it smaller and use it with others. That way it isn't so noticeable, especially if it's a scrappy quilt.

You can make a disappearing 9 patch, add fabrics you like also.I bet it will make up pretty. As one other person wrote, us it for backing. :-P Nancy
