What do you like to make with yo-yos?
I received a large kitchen size trash bag of yo-yo's. I would say they are the small size yo-yos made from scraps, so I have a variety of fabrics and colors. Some are in sandwich Zip-lock bags that are the same fabric (8-10 yo-yos to a bag). I have embellished quilts with yo-yos by stitching around the outer edges so the center of the yo-yo pops out a bit, like a flower. I would like to hear what others are making with their yo-yo's.
As always, Thanks for your help! |
I generally make them someone else's problem.
|
Thanks for the smile popover, I think I would do the same thing. But, back to copy cat, my favorite pattern I have seen with yo yo's is a pineapple display that was framed. Brown/gold yo yos were sewn into a pineapple shape with green leaves appliqued on. Really cute gift idea.

How small is small? You could use designs that are generally used for hexies, or make flowers out of and applique onto blocks...go to Pinterest for tons of ideas......and have fun
|
Purses, totes, table toppers, centers for flowers, I use them for all kinds of items other than quilts. Browse Pinterest for yo yo quilting... thousands of pictures to inspire you. :)
|
Trip Around the World quilt top (any size), pillows, throws, embellishments (use a pretty button in the center to cover the hole)...If you think of it, it probably can be made using yo-yos. I've seen vests, scarves and jackets made from them, too.
|
Thanks for the great ideas. I like hearing from the board members because they are so talented and generous to share their project ideas. I love pinterest for inspiration, too.
I forgot to mention, that my cat's favorite toy is a yo-yo with a pom-pom sewn in the center. He bats it around like a hockey puck all day long...great exercise.:) |

Thank you for the tips! |
I have seen dolls and animals made from them. The yo-yo's are used for the arms and legs by stacking them and stringing through the center.
Here is my favorite yo-yo quilt: http://allthingsshabbyandbeautiful.t...st/47988255248 |
Make Christmas cards for all your quilting friends with red yo yos in a pot for poinsettias, green ones in the shape of a Chrustmas tree etc. Use a line of them and embroidered hooks above them on a mantel scarf to suggest Christmas ornaments. Sew them together in long rows for garlands for your Christmas tree.

Sell them on Ebay?
|
I am not really fond of yo-yos either but I sure do love the looks of this quilt that yngldy posted the link to. If I had been given enough yo-yos to make this quilt, that's sure what I would do with them. At least it would probably use them all up at one time. It's beautiful .... and I am not even into shabby stuff.

I saw this quilt at the KS state fair this past year. I believe it was made up with something like 20,000 yoyos. It was a queen size! Of course it won a ribbon! Maybe you could make something similar? Sorry for the bad photography, I couldn't get a good angle because of all the admirers standing around:)
|
And I once made a scrappy yoyo throw for my parents for Christmas. It turned out really pretty and cheerful.
|
yngldy: thank you so much for sharing that absolutely beautiful yo-yo quilt.
|
My favorite use for yo yos is in making animals and dolls. My mother made me a clown doll with yo you body, arms and legs and a white sock head. I thought I was in heaven! Loved that doll for many years and wish I still had it today.
I have a pattern for cats made with yo yos. You can make any animal with them, just use the animal stuffed head with the yo yo body. One doll takes a LOT of yo yos. https://www.pinterest.com/bdeverse/yo-yo-dolls/ |
I love yo-yo's, especially the floral ones. I put some in the cornerstones of one of my nieces' Quilt. So cute! On my bucket list is a yo-yo bed topper or bed runner topper. I'm not sure whether I'll be patient enough, though, so it may end up as wall art. :)
|
I've never made yo-yos or worked with them. I did see a darling vintage decorative pillow with them, though. It was probably 8x10 or smaller.
|
our guild has a yo yo garland to put on the tree we put up at the local museum every year

Several years ago, someone in my quilt guild brought in kitchen curtains she had made for show and tell. She had sewn yo yo's across the bottom of the curtains so they hung off the bottom edge. The curtains were gorgeous! I never forgot it.

I love your idea of making cards...and the designs you mentioned would be great on pillows too! Thanks bunches! |

Have seen them as embellishments for all kinds of uses and on sewing machine covers. saw a photo of a throw with hexies with yo yo centers. It was really cute. Hexies were green and yo yos were variety. Look like cute flowers.

Here's my one and only make with yo-yos. I have a box of extras that will probably stay in the box. My daughter took the quilt for her new house.
|
A quilt store, which is no longer in business, had window valances made with yo-yos. They were eye catching!
|
SSStiches, that is a very pretty quilt.
I, also, have a bunch of yo-yos that I have made over the years while sitting in the doctor's office or while waiting for something. I'm not sure what I am going to do with them either. I did see a picture of a quilt where the yo-yos were stitched on the block seam, in between the blocks, using them like they were sashing. It was quite pretty, as each block was a large centered applique and a lot of space around it. The background was muslin and the yo-yos were all different colors, sewed down the seams and it made quite an eye-catching quilt. I wish I had a picture to show you. |

Think I would use them on the border of a quilt as flowers along a long winding, embroidered vine that either circled or partially circled it with a few appliqued leaves scattered about.
Some really good suggestions here from others. |
I have seen them used to make Christmas ornaments--stacked, thread running though them with enough to make hanging cord---other decorations can be added at the top. On my to-do list !
|
One of the most incredible coverlets I have ever seen was made using yoyos and sewing them together on the four compass points. It was done with random colors and had a solid color (deep green) that was tied to the backing creating a little fuzzy center to each yoyo in yellow wool yarn. The background showed in the little openings between the yoyos. The whole effect was a flower garden. It was made by a man for his wife. Beautiful , and a thoughtful gift.

Sadly, now I want to dig out my old cross-stitch patterns and do them in yo-yo's. If our longevity is determined by all the things we want to do, then I will never die. :) |
Another idea...use them around your binding for an extra "wow" on a quilt. (Think of "round" Prairie Points"). Hope this is clear.
|
Someone on the QB recently posted a Christmas Tree wallhanging that was made with yo-yos, it was adorable.
|
I like to use them for embellishment. I have also stacked them to make toys (dolls/clowns with children's socks for the head and stacked yoyos for the body parts). My favorite items have been table toppers and runners. You can take a cross stitch pattern and lay out yoyos in the same manner and sew them together. I have a Christmas tree table topper made in this fashion. You can also use that method for decorating sweatshirts. Have fun or pass them on.

letawellman, I love this: If our longevity is determined by all the things we want to do, then I will never die.
I think I will adopt it! |
I also add them to everything
