What do you listen to while you quilt?

My mother never had a radio or stereo on while she sewed. I think she was just happy to have a silent house while her four children were in school and the habit never changed.

I listen to audiobooks. I have always loved books on tape; now, the MP3 and free audiobooks online from our library has increased availability a hundredfold. I have seriously increased the number of books I read since I can double task while sewing and listen to a book at the same time. I have listened to everything from Charles Dickens to Clive Cussler and everything inbetween.

What do you listen to, if anything, while quilting?

DebraK 11-04-2012 04:04 PM

today, it was Miss Marple mysteries on netflix. it's always different, whatever I'm in the mood for. Too eclectic to spell it all out. Never the same.

ragquilter 11-04-2012 04:05 PM

I don't listen to anything, mainly because I don't have a TV in the room I sew in. I really don't want one, I do sometimes listen to music on my computer. I have thought about looking for some DVDs to watch on my computer, but I haven't really bothered looking or even thinking about what I would like. I hadn't thought about books on tape. I used to love to read, thanks for the idea.

Raggiemom 11-04-2012 04:13 PM

I either turn on the radio (country) or use the classic country station on the computer. Sometimes it's Celtic music.

If I am trying to concentrate on a tricky pattern or need concentration, I put on a variety of instrumental music, like the several from the Narada label. If I am just cruising, sewing or ironing or cutting repetitive pieces, I like Il Divo, El Volo, and oldies. Now, I recently listened to the entire set of Harry Potter audio books I got for a gift from my sons girlfriend and her mother and I am SOLD on audio books!! Need to get a library card and see if they have them. I love reading, but won't take time during my day or evening, and try to read in bed, but don't get very far!n Yes, audio books are the way to go! If you get distracted, just re-play it!!

I like listening to audio books, too, but lately I've been enjoying the silence...or listening to my husband watch football. Sometimes I really enjoy music, too.

It's Tv all the way excep on Saturday it's NPR through my iPhone.

misskira 11-04-2012 04:25 PM

I listen to audiobooks as well. When I had my baby my reading time drastically decreased for some reason... So now I listen to books while I sew, clean, drive, knit... Pretty much anytime I can.

mcfay 11-04-2012 04:31 PM

I don't have my radio or tv in my sewing building yet, so I listen to the birds chase bug (or something) on my roof. It's metal so it is loud.

Sunnie 11-04-2012 04:39 PM

I, too, listen to audiobooks. Started them when I had a delivery company and was on the road all day.

QuiltingGrannie 11-04-2012 04:45 PM

Country music. Once in a while just the silence, but usually country music, turned up if I'm the only one around.

I listen to the Bible on Audio book.... so peaceful

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 11-04-2012 04:56 PM

Often I listen to quilting videos either on Youtube or Quilt in a Day. Other times it will be documentaries of whatever interests me at the moment.

bigsister63 11-04-2012 04:57 PM

I listen to books on CD. Seems like I do not have time to read so listening while sewing gets "readinbg" done.

dunster 11-04-2012 05:33 PM

Audiobooks here too, unless I need to concentrate on the quilting, and then it's quiet time, unless you count talking to myself.

tezell0801 11-04-2012 05:41 PM

football if there is a game on, other than that whatever is on tv I like.

Jan in VA 11-04-2012 06:17 PM

Often I listen to the DirecTV channel 856 - New Age - which is mostly instrumental music like you'd hear in health spas and massage places. Very peaceful and doesn't require my attention.

My own thoughts....

I like that channel too.

Silver Needle 11-04-2012 06:25 PM

New Age, Classical or Modern Christian Rock

Dolphyngyrl 11-04-2012 06:27 PM

Silence is golden I just like to hear the hum of the machine

Divokittysmom 11-04-2012 06:43 PM

I love music in my sewing room, I found TV way too distracting for me. I love Il Divo, Josh Groban, Michael Buble`, Gordon Lightfoot to name a few. Music helps soothe out any bumps in the quilting road for me ;)

franc36 11-04-2012 06:51 PM

I listen to audio books most of the time. Today, however, I spent most of my quilting time watching quilting lessons on Craftsy as I worked. If the Lady Vols are playing basketball and the game is not televised, I listen to the game on the radio as I quilt. I get more quilting accomplished if I am listening to something.

HillCountryGal 11-04-2012 07:09 PM

Mainly I play some of my old cassett tapes (Reba, Josh Groban, Statler Brothers, etc.) or cd's. No tv.
Lots of times, the quiet is enough for me.

Jennalyn 11-04-2012 07:56 PM

My sewing machine is usually set up in my bedroom right next to my computer, so I pull up iTunes and just start whatever I feel like. Sometimes classic rock. Sometimes swing or jazz. Sometimes video game music. Depends on what I'm quilting!

liont 11-04-2012 08:02 PM

I don't. I get distracted. When I listen to music, I get very intense. I can't work and listen at the same time.

joyce888 11-04-2012 08:06 PM

I love listening to music while I sew but I must confess I also watch TV. If its a complicated pattern I stick with music.

spokanequilter 11-04-2012 09:55 PM

I have tons of music on my iPod, which I listen to while sewing. Classical, Broadway, soft rock, country, Christian - I love lots of different kinds of music and I always have it on when I'm home. I've never listened to audio books - I prefer to have the book in my hand and see the print on the page. But, I'm so impressed that so many of you are listening to books while sewing!!

stillclock 11-04-2012 10:07 PM

i am usually streaming something on the laptop. i just finished the bbc series "life on mars" and it was really good.

now i'm watching (sort of half watching while i work) american horror story. i don't think it's all that good, but it'll do :)

slicksister 11-04-2012 10:56 PM

Sirius Broadway station all the way!

SandScraps 11-04-2012 11:18 PM

I tune into my favourite music radio station - lots of tunes I know, news flashes and very little talking.

earthwalker 11-04-2012 11:24 PM

These days I enjoy the beautiful sound of silence....

Borntohandquilt 11-04-2012 11:56 PM

I love to listen to classical music. We have a radio station here that is specialized on classical music, film music and new classics - perfect for me. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, John Barry, John Williams, Nigel Hess, Patrick Doyle and all the others inspire me a lot with their music! :)

Knitette 11-05-2012 12:02 AM

Dolly Parton for me, or Opera.
Our car got broken into once. The policeman laughed when I read out the list of CDs that had been taken :o

AnnieH 11-05-2012 12:48 AM

Depends on my mood, opera is a favourite but I wait until my DH is out and turn up the volume. We've recently got Netflix (not as many choices as in the US, but still good), so I watched West Side Story yesterday (needed the Kleenex).

Last week I removed the TV. Though my sewing room is big, I didn't find a good place for it. Somehow it was always in my way :) I listen to some radio stations or audio books with my radio and don't miss the TV.

SandiGrove 11-05-2012 01:58 AM

I love the silence:o

AshleyR 11-05-2012 03:09 AM

I do better when I listen to music (Pandora for me! I have such a strange mix on there!) but I also use that "me time" to watch a movie that nobody else wants to watch. But I can't watch something that is good, or then my sewing machine doesn't get as much attention! So it's usually a comedy I've already seen or a horror movie!

Audio books from the library mostly. I used to listen to Old Time Radio.

QuiltingKrazy 11-05-2012 03:53 AM

I listen to pandora radio on my iPhone I can choose the music to match my mood.
